Happy New Year, Geeks!

I'm curious. What game basically fired/pink slipped another game for you?

I.E. You enjoyed Candyland and played it a lot but when you got Chutes and Ladders, CL was tossed out the door.

How could this happen? Well, the above example isn't that great but maybe you learned a new game that was similar in mechanics but better than the game you were playing. So, you tossed the older one out!

I'm going to list the game that did the firing and mention which game was fired in the body of the text.

6/6/11 WOW, this GL has been a ton of fun b/c of all those that have contributed thoughts. Nice going! There was a suggestion to edit the list alphabetically. I thought it a great idea at this point for searching, etc. So, done.

1/5/10 1:30pm EST EDIT: I think this geeklist is going to get me FIRED...

FIRED Lost Cities.
Listen, Lost Cities is a good game but nothing to write home about. First it got kicked in the shins by Battle Line and recently Jaipur finished it off for good. Yes siree.
To me it's more thematic and varied plus Jaipur's got more interaction overall. Looks great, plays great. For a gaming quickie, don't go searching anymore for those god-forsaken lost cities, just get on a plane to Rajasthan baby!cool

(Bela, also known as Klabberjass).

Culbertson's jazzed up version of the traditional european game of Klabberjass/Bela. With his modernized scoring and streamlined rules, and the built-for-excitement bridge scoring, there's absolutely no reason to play the original.

(Five ratings, two BGG entries under different names: not bad for an old game from the 30s!)

So all 3 BGG users who play Klaberjass can become 3 users who play Jo-Jotte.

because it does the whole "epic battles in a mythical ancient era" much better.

and

because it does the whole build/move/conquest genre and card-based combat much more elegantly. StarCraft is good, and I like some of the design decisions and game mechanics, but it's so bogged down in FFG's tendency to throw hundreds of cards and chits at a game. Combat in StarCraft doesn't take long to become headache-inducing, while combat in Kemet takes just a few minutes and is as complicated at the beginning of the game as it is at the end.

and

because it does conquest via holding territory for VP gain better.

King of Tokyo easily fired

Played both tonight after a long break from Inn fighting. PLayed King first - heaps of laughs, trash talk, and so on. Couple of new players who got into it round 1. Game went 30 minutes or so. Awesome

Played Inn Fighting second because I remembered it being much the same style of game only with D&D characters not monsters. Confusing even though played lots of times before, lots of rules checking, bored expressions, no trash talking, weird way points go back and forth. Couple of new players never got into it at all. Game went 1hr 30. Snoozefest.

A bit sad really because I had such fond memories of Inn Fighting.

FIRED:

I'm sorry Dr. Knizia, but Vaccarino's game has a modular board (4 sections from 8 available) and some new scoring methods based on 10 different Kingdom Builder cards (selecting randomly only 3 of these) that makes every game different.

All of these ingredients makes Kingdom Builder an ideal Through the Desert substitute with more variability, interaction and thought decisions to take.

For me a deserved winner of SdJ 2012 (IMHO).

What???? You haven't heard of either???? Well great three player games are hard to come by. And Rise is very, very good.

But King of Siam is just exceptional. Only a couple pages of rules with some pretty interesting, vexing and cool decisions. A very (very) light (and fast) Twilight Struggle type of experience for three.

Last of the Independents is faster moving, compared to the plodding tech. tree type approach to Automobile which gives few tactical choices once you set your course. In LOTI there are surprises at every turn. Hard choices abound, but limited amounts of money keep the pace quick. While luck is a big factor,it can be mitigated in several tactical fashions. Sacrifices here and there can reap great benefits somewhere else. Power plays can do their duty when necessary. The three ways to win tokens keep you on your toes both offensively and defensively. It just sort of cuts to the quick the essentials of hard core competition on an economic level.

Fired Citadels

Citadels is cheap, so it's got that going for it, but if you're looking for a good role-selection card game that has a lot of screwage and supports six players, Libertalia has it all over Citadels.

Any single game is going to be dependent on which cards actually make it into the game and the rounds in which they come out, so it seems there's little chance of the game feeling samey, too.

Very neat system.

Fired Diplomacy.

Granted, Lifeboats is technically a "negotiation" game and Diplomacy is a "wargame" with heavy negotiation mechanics, but while I dearly love Diplomacy it is usually a much better idea to crack open Lifeboats when I have 5-6 people over then Diplomacy.

Reasons:
1.) Total Gameplay Time: Lifeboats takes only about 90 minutes compared to the 4-7 hours usually required for Diplomacy.

2.) Player Elimination Downtime: While both feature player elimination it doesn't result in the outed-player being forced to sit for hours with nothing to do. Some interpretations of the rules even suggest that they can still even vote.

3.) Number of player: Lifeboats needs at least 4 players to really shine, whereas Diplomacy needs at least 6 players- unless you are using some custom board or varient. Because of the two issues above, even if I get 7 guys together they rarely want to sign on to a whole day of playing one game.

4.) Easier with Kids: Lifeboats is much easier to teach to children. Not that either game would be suitable for young people (or any for that matter) who cannot handle conflict or back-stabbing without it leading to hurt feelings.

5.) Possibility for Errors: In my experience people tend to enjoy Diplomacy the most because of the negotiations and deal making aspects more then the army unit tactical decision making. Unless you are colorblind or stupid there is no way you can mess up your vote in Lifeboats, whereas in Diplomacy it is very easy to accidently miswrite an order. How about having units bounce over and over again in Diplomacy? Not a problem in Lifeboats, as the Captain makes the final call and someone most likely is going to drown!
