Happy New Year, Geeks!

I'm curious. What game basically fired/pink slipped another game for you?

I.E. You enjoyed Candyland and played it a lot but when you got Chutes and Ladders, CL was tossed out the door.

How could this happen? Well, the above example isn't that great but maybe you learned a new game that was similar in mechanics but better than the game you were playing. So, you tossed the older one out!

I'm going to list the game that did the firing and mention which game was fired in the body of the text.

Nice work, Simon!

6/6/11 WOW, this GL has been a ton of fun b/c of all those that have contributed thoughts. Nice going! There was a suggestion to edit the list alphabetically. I thought it a great idea at this point for searching, etc. So, done.

1/5/10 1:30pm EST EDIT: I think this geeklist is going to get me FIRED...

Last of the Independents is faster moving, compared to the plodding tech. tree type approach to Automobile which gives few tactical choices once you set your course. In LOTI there are surprises at every turn. Hard choices abound, but limited amounts of money keep the pace quick. While luck is a big factor,it can be mitigated in several tactical fashions. Sacrifices here and there can reap great benefits somewhere else. Power plays can do their duty when necessary. The three ways to win tokens keep you on your toes both offensively and defensively. It just sort of cuts to the quick the essentials of hard core competition on an economic level.

Fired Citadels

Citadels is cheap, so it's got that going for it, but if you're looking for a good role-selection card game that has a lot of screwage and supports six players, Libertalia has it all over Citadels.

Any single game is going to be dependent on which cards actually make it into the game and the rounds in which they come out, so it seems there's little chance of the game feeling samey, too.

Very neat system.

Fired Diplomacy.

Granted, Lifeboats is technically a "negotiation" game and Diplomacy is a "wargame" with heavy negotiation mechanics, but while I dearly love Diplomacy it is usually a much better idea to crack open Lifeboats when I have 5-6 people over then Diplomacy.

Reasons:
1.) Total Gameplay Time: Lifeboats takes only about 90 minutes compared to the 4-7 hours usually required for Diplomacy.

2.) Player Elimination Downtime: While both feature player elimination it doesn't result in the outed-player being forced to sit for hours with nothing to do. Some interpretations of the rules even suggest that they can still even vote.

3.) Number of player: Lifeboats needs at least 4 players to really shine, whereas Diplomacy needs at least 6 players- unless you are using some custom board or varient. Because of the two issues above, even if I get 7 guys together they rarely want to sign on to a whole day of playing one game.

4.) Easier with Kids: Lifeboats is much easier to teach to children. Not that either game would be suitable for young people (or any for that matter) who cannot handle conflict or back-stabbing without it leading to hurt feelings.

5.) Possibility for Errors: In my experience people tend to enjoy Diplomacy the most because of the negotiations and deal making aspects more then the army unit tactical decision making. Unless you are colorblind or stupid there is no way you can mess up your vote in Lifeboats, whereas in Diplomacy it is very easy to accidently miswrite an order. How about having units bounce over and over again in Diplomacy? Not a problem in Lifeboats, as the Captain makes the final call and someone most likely is going to drown!

Stressless and clever mechanics (you determine the next player for drawing a visible planet tile) with a great novel theme perfectly assembled and very beautiful illustrations (the originals on the novel). The scoring is deep enough to play (and re-play) it with family and core-gamers.

A nice and pleasant game!

Pandemic

LOTR is a much better cooperative game to me since everyone's fate is not necessarily tied together, and there is reason for players to help each other as individual characters instead of just doing whatever is best for some big end goal without any threat to themselves as an individual player.

Pandemic has a lot of "directing" that goes on and in LOTR there is definitely some of that but I find it is often more consulting than directing: "What risk are we going to take? Can you discard this or that?" etc. In Pandemic the choices are generally pretty clear, and things only get tense and complicated late in the game, where LOTR gets complicated really fast, and stays at this level of complication through most of the game.

I love love love Chinatown. I dunno what it is about the game that's so much fun. But there's really never a reason to play it again. Lords of Vegas is basically Chinatown with a better theme, more options (take risks to build out), and better than that, if you need a lil extra money, you can gamble at an opponents casino!

Great game. Sorry Chinatown.

LoV has the same majority control and hostile takeover aspects of Acquire, but corporations pay out constantly and ownership is more fluid. There is a lot more luck involved than Acquire, but that is only fitting for a Vegas game. Overall, I think it provides a tense, engaging game until the last card is drawn.

as the two-player card game I played with my spouse. This was important, as no matter where we traveled, we always packed a card game just in case. For quite some time that was Skip-Bo, until that fateful day I discovered BGG and dug up some wonderful-sounding alternatives. Of all the ones we tried, Lost Cities clicked with us the best, and now, years later, it's still the one we tuck away into our suitcase. Bless you, Reiner Knizia. Bless you.

It has the same mechanic but supports more players, has easier score tracking, and throws in the bonus items on the map. Especially when played with the variant to allow increasing or decreasing expeditions, this game is strictly better in all but portability.

(Note: I know not everyone agrees on the variant. It does make discarding more difficult and unlikely but it almost entirely solves the huge issue I had with the starting hand randomness.)

In just about all of its wretched forms.

Magnet is much more entertaining and thought provoking while retaining the hide 'n' bluff elements that Stratego has.

The movement mechanism provides some pause to think your moves through correctly and the board setup is more eye-catching for spectators.

It's a shame that both share a similar weakness by having fairly simple domination tactics. Take your 3 and 4 rank men near the middle of magnet's board in mid game covering seperated vertices and see what that does for you.
