Happy New Year, Geeks!

I'm curious. What game basically fired/pink slipped another game for you?

I.E. You enjoyed Candyland and played it a lot but when you got Chutes and Ladders, CL was tossed out the door.

How could this happen? Well, the above example isn't that great but maybe you learned a new game that was similar in mechanics but better than the game you were playing. So, you tossed the older one out!

I'm going to list the game that did the firing and mention which game was fired in the body of the text.

6/6/11 WOW, this GL has been a ton of fun b/c of all those that have contributed thoughts. Nice going! There was a suggestion to edit the list alphabetically. I thought it a great idea at this point for searching, etc. So, done.

1/5/10 1:30pm EST EDIT: I think this geeklist is going to get me FIRED...

Fired Stone Age and Lords of Waterdeep.

As I gain more experience in this wonderful hobby of ours I've came to appreciate heavier games in the Euro family. I feel Agricola beat both games in terms of my desire to play. Maybe it is the new game on the block but as of right now I don't want to play either LoW nor SA over the good old 'Gric right now.

All the things my husband liked about Agricola, without the thing he didn't like: the pressure to feed the family at the end.

Also, plays faster ...and now with the expansion, my husband likes it even more.

This and the More Buildings expansion fired

Lords of Waterdeep with 2p

This is purely a comparison at 2p since, obviously, All Creatures Big and Small is a 2p only game.

I have never enjoyed a 2p game of LoW. I think I gave it three tries. Interesting, yes, but no, not fun.

The Intrigue cards felt too arbitrary at 2p. Oh, I just won the game 'cause I hit you with this mandatory quest that I knew you couldn't fulfill? Yawn. Yes, that's also true at larger player counts, but at 2p it's more personal and far less fulfilling. I won my first 5p game of LoW because I waited until the last minute to target the leader. I was planning that move and playing quietly and non-aggressively the entire game. THAT felt cool to swoop in and win. At 2p, just no.

Despite loving the times I've played LoW 4p and 5p, I never ever bought the theme. It was always colored cubes to me. In All Creatures I say horses, pigs, sheep and cows. And without hesitation or thought. In LoW I'm always saying "[color] cubes]." The mechanics in All Creatures feel thematic to me. A trough keeps an animal around. Fences hold in the animals. Etc. etc. There is no flavor text because none is required!

I own or have tried a lot of worker placement games. It's the one mechanic that I don't feel a need for a lot of repetition. A WP game has to deliver a lot for me to keep it. While LoW does deliver for me at 4p and 5p, there just isn't enough there for me to justify keeping it in my own collection. All Creatures fired LoW for me.

If I want to play LoW (which I'll gladly do) I can play someone else's copy. And if there isn't a copy available and I want a WP game I have other great options like Carson City which I think delivers on its theme far better than LoW. Or if we're looking for major spite (forget sissy Intrigue cards you can plan against!) I'll pull out Vanuatu which can make grown men cry.

Alien Frontiers fired Stone Age.

Both good games, and light-medium with a focus on worker placement and resource collection.

However instead of the set collection (huts, technologies) in Stone Age, Alien Frontiers responds with MOON COLONIZATION (I like that). This means far more player interaction in that your VPs and bonuses are directly determined by conquering certain parts of the moon, MOVING your opponents' colonies, protecting yours and racing to a fast finish. Area control that is somewhat lacking in Stone Age.

Likewise, while both involve use of dice for resource collection, Alien Frontiers uses dice for ALL worker placement choices. Yet rolling higher in Alien Frontiers does not mean rolling better (except in one or two areas) while the use of Alien Techs (to transfer, raise OR lower numbers on die rolls as needed) is far superior to the use of tools (+1 to rolls)in Stone Age.

This game, designed by a friend of mine, fired

sort of.

Bruce's game is based, he says, on Sports Illustrated Baseball, which I've never played. We play an annual, weekend long draft league tournament w/ ATBB, which includes a set roster of 300 or so all time great players.

I find ATBB to have a more elegant design, and a more fun "feel" than S-O-M, which is still a game I love. There are significant differences. ATBB player cards are based on players' career statistics, not the individual seasons of SOM. So of course, statistics aren't as specifically accurate as SOM. Still, by the time a seaon of ATBB has been played (we usually play 25 or so games, plus playoffs), the players perform very consistently as their stats indicated they should. Rickey Henderson gets a lot of walks, Walter Johnson pitches a lot of good innings, Babe Ruth and Ted Williams excell, Jim Thome either walks, goes deep, or strikes out a lot, and Toby Harrah doesn't get any play time. Yes, Toby Harrah. In order to have enough players at every position, Bruce had to go pretty deep in some cases.

The main reason I'd say ATBB fired SOM is that I find the game more fun to play. The level of detail isn't quite the same, but playing the game, rolling the dice, referring to charts, all flow seemlessly. There are lots and lots of very exciting moments (like waiting to see if your excellent center fielder will make a "great play" or just miss as a ball falls in for extra bases).

Don't know if I'm alone on this one, but the most intriguing aspect of Bang to me was trying to figure out what roles everyone had and thus figuring out what you're supposed to be doing. However in Bang you often had to do somewhat weird things to get to that point simply because of the hand you're holding.

Traitor boils down the "Find the bad guy" mechanic to a purely debate and social interaction which I quite enjoy. I know some people will probably feel the opposite and crave the cards to work with, to me they just got in the way.

I really like to play abstracts in a more casual way. Since Arimaa is pretty new to me and my abstract partners we do not dwell into strategy to much and pay more attention to tactics.
I really enjoy that part of abstract gaming.

I suppose this will change as we explore Arimaa more, but even putting my first point aside, I feel it's a more enjoyable gme to me than chess.

To me the mechanics in both of these games are "standard" at best. The thing that really made both of them pop was the FEEL they provide. Arkham Horror has a better source for that feel, pulls you into it much deeper and has much less fiddly play. I was always frustrated by Betrayal because I don't typically know what I should be doing.

Arkham Horror hired, then fired...

What I mean by that is... I started playing AH last summer, and loved it right from the start. I was already a big fan of Last Night on Earth, so I had wanted to play A Touch of Evil for quite some time, and in the wake of playing Arkham Horror, I realized I really had to try ATOE, being that it seemed similar but covered a different type of theme and had some different aspects to it.

So I picked up ATOE in a trade and grabbed the new expansion right away. I enjoyed playing about 5-6 games of ATOE but I realized that it really just made me want to play AH again. I prefer the setting and villains of ATOE, but most of the game just tells you what to do and then you roll some dice and see what happens. AH has a lot of randomness, sure, but it also affords you some choices throughout and more of a sense of active participation and adventure, and AH just seems to be much more of a satisfying experience overall. I played another game of AH after having played ATOE and it really confirmed that feeling and so I ended up auctioning ATOE and have no regrets. I still think ATOE is decent for what it is and I'd be happy to play it again, but it just ain't no Arkham Horror.

I like Pacific Victory a lot, but after I played A.E, I realized they were too similar in theme and scope and both are block games.

If I want complex/Card Driven Game, I have Empire of the Sun. If I want a simple counter-based / Area control game, I have Victory in the Pacific.

I like the combat system in Pacific Victory, which is the A-B-C Hammer of the Scots system on steroids, but Asia Engulfed still does that better, and the supply, transport, the rebuild procedure (ESPECIALLY that!), and the China front are handled so much better.

I rated Pacific Victory an 8, and I mock the Euroboys for their "Jones Theory," but in this case, it truly did apply, so I traded Pacific Victory for Age of Napoleon.

Fired Bang, Blood Bound

Asteriated Grail is also a game with factions (2 teams)
But the mechanics of the game is just much better than Bang
Theres no draw phase, you only pick up cards when you take damage, your team loses morale whenever someone goes over their hand limit (generally 6) when someone attacks you with a physical attack, you may counter the attack if you have an attack card of the same element (5 regular elements, with 2 special ones), countering the attack allows you to target another player on the opposing team
in this form, taking damage (and thus drawing cards) is not always bad, as it increases your defensive ability AND gives you more attack options
there are special attacks that you simply can't block, and its those that you really need to watch out for when you have a full hand

no player elimination, all players fight till the last moment (BB sort of did, but not really, once you take your 3 wounds you may as well be out of the game, not to mention that most ppl won't even try to hit you once you revealed your number unless they have reasons to believe that you are the leader of the opposing clan)
a game takes 15~30 min most of the time (seen anything from 5~45 min, but 90% of the games fall in 15~30 min)
less downtime (BB and Bang both have a considerable amount of downtime)
