Happy New Year, Geeks!

I'm curious. What game basically fired/pink slipped another game for you?

I.E. You enjoyed Candyland and played it a lot but when you got Chutes and Ladders, CL was tossed out the door.

How could this happen? Well, the above example isn't that great but maybe you learned a new game that was similar in mechanics but better than the game you were playing. So, you tossed the older one out!

I'm going to list the game that did the firing and mention which game was fired in the body of the text.

6/6/11 WOW, this GL has been a ton of fun b/c of all those that have contributed thoughts. Nice going! There was a suggestion to edit the list alphabetically. I thought it a great idea at this point for searching, etc. So, done.

1/5/10 1:30pm EST EDIT: I think this geeklist is going to get me FIRED...

Both 3 player Wallace games. I was just looking for a reason to get rid of ATF... there was something about it that just didn't sit well with me. And I love Wallace.

The Grape Escape fired Splat!

Splat!, released by MB in 1990 was the ultimate in sadistic children's games at the time of its release. If your opponent's playing piece was in the wrong place at the wrong time, it was your duty to use the supplied plastic hand and smash them into a play-dough pancake.

Then came Parker Brothers answer to Splat! two years later: The Grape Escape. The Grape Escape was similar to Splat! in that it was a simple roll-and-move category of game. But what The Grape Escape brought to the table wasn't just the promotion of sadism, it was out-and-out torture simulation for children. The Grape Escape allowed you to cleave your opponent in half with a tree saw, pulverize them under a ridged roller, disembody them with an over-sized pair of scissors, or unsympathetically squish them with a boot.

When I was a kid, I thought Splat! was amusing. And then The Grape Escape came out, and at that point I knew that I had lost some of my innocence.

It brought reaction fire into the tank vs tank micro-game field. Or, to put it another way, you move while I shoot vs move then shoot was far better. Then, variable maps, terrain based on scenarios, multiple weapon types with advantages/disadvantages vs different unit types. Yup, way better.

Guillotine is easy to teach, with lots of luck involved regarding card draw, but without the complete randomness in game length (and rules) as happens in Fluxx.

Guillotine doesn't overstay its welcome and doesn't suffer from the overwhelming advantage that Fluxx players familiar with a particular deck get over newbies by knowing all the victory conditions available.

Fun filler beats frustrating filler.

Fired Bridge.

Bridge is basically two connected games: bidding, and the play of the hand. Both are fascinating and challenging, but the bidding is really the heart of the game--there's lots of trick-taking games in which to practice your squeeze-plays and finesses, but there's only one place where you can get the deep logic of Bridge bidding.

Until, that is, Hanabi came along. By stripping out the card play, Hanabi takes Bridge's logic and distills it down to its essence. Memorizing conventions goes away, because Hanabi is simple enough that all its conventions can be derived from first principles. Teaching Bridge to a newcomer is, to be honest, painful for both the master and the student; teaching Hanabi is always a delight. And as a bonus, Hanabi is flexible enough to handle 2-5.

If I found three other veteran Bridge players--rare these days!--I'd probably play again for old time's sake. But since Hanabi came along, I don't even try to get newbies into Bridge, because Hanabi captures everything that's great about the game in a vastly more accessible package. Never has there been a more deserving Spiel des Jahres winner.

Icehouse (the game).

I've heard this sentiment echoed by a lot of pyramid gamers. Icetowers seemed to take the most innovative aspects of Icehouse (no board, no turns) and remove a great deal of the fiddliness of Icehouse.

I've only played Classic Icehouse a few times but I definitely prefer Icetowers. Much of the same feel but it is far simpler to learn and teach as well as quicker and in my opinion more elegant.

Best part though was that I didn't have to buy anything new or replace anything when Icetowers fired Icehouse since they use the same set!

FIRED Axis & Allies.
.

Mainly because I could never roll a 1 to save my life. I really really grew to hate Axis & Allies, and it was the only game that my friends ever wanted to play. Then suddenly one of them obtained Ikusa, and I was the happiest teenager-who-was-not-getting-laid alive. I didn't have to roll a 1 to kill something any more, and it used twelve-sided dice! Like, ZOMG! Thankfully, from that point on, we exclusively played Ikusa over Axis & Allies (my 1 allergy was not the only reason why), and I enjoyed playing board games with my friends again. The End.
