Happy New Year, Geeks!

I'm curious. What game basically fired/pink slipped another game for you?

I.E. You enjoyed Candyland and played it a lot but when you got Chutes and Ladders, CL was tossed out the door.

How could this happen? Well, the above example isn't that great but maybe you learned a new game that was similar in mechanics but better than the game you were playing. So, you tossed the older one out!

I'm going to list the game that did the firing and mention which game was fired in the body of the text.

6/6/11 WOW, this GL has been a ton of fun b/c of all those that have contributed thoughts. Nice going! There was a suggestion to edit the list alphabetically. I thought it a great idea at this point for searching, etc. So, done.

1/5/10 1:30pm EST EDIT: I think this geeklist is going to get me FIRED...

This AWESOME game fired Heroquest, Space Hulk, and Space Crusade all in one fell swoop! It made any other dungeon crawl game of the time look like chopped liver...all due to the competetiveness it introduced amongst the "otherwise allies." Rather than a single declared bad guy, each player took turns playing the bad guy, earning points in the process and building resentment amongst the other players all the while. With great fiction, cool characters, fun weaponry, and 10 very well play-tested and balanced scenarios, this game provided more fun for the $20 I paid for it than has all of my enittre board game collection. This is seriously the one game we have played where I have watched grown men get pissed off and punch each other due to a back stab or a bail out.

Such a shame they never did an expansion...and everybody that ever took over the material tried to "expand" upon it. The material and story was fine as it was, although other doomtroopers, apostle forces, and scenarios and tiles/card could have made this game an absoulute juggernaut.

I was sooooo upset at FFG's failed attempt. They took Cosmic Wimpout and simply "expanded" it. They tried to "reinvent" MUTANT, and that was their downfall from day one!

Murdered

On a dreary overcast night, the aging but loyal butler lurched to answer a summons at the door. Opening the door a sudden flash of lightning forced only a stoic silhouette of the calling stranger. When the flash subsided and the butler's pupils adjusted to the outside darkness, his eyesight filled with another white flash of internal origin and fell lifeless to the floor.

Crime scene investigators are puzzled as the only clues left behind were an old whistle and a drenched, almost incomprehensible telegram, due to the ink running off the paper. The lone decipherable word was, "Istanbul".

Definitely fired Chess.

I have seen a lot on this list of games that fired Chess ranging from Go to Hive but I do not believe that any of them actually take what Chess is and make it a better game.

That is where Navia Dratp comes in! It is not "Chess-like" it is an actual improvement on Chess. It takes the same basic gameplay adds a couple extra twists (at no increase in complexity) and keeps the strategy at (or above) the level of Chess.

After being introduced to this game a few years ago I will very rarely return to Chess unless someone is really wanting to play or I am teaching a yougster the game.

Carcassonne is a nice tile placing game but it's way to boring peaceful. Neuroshima Hex does great job here, as its conflicts don't consist of people wanting to be in the same town, but on huge enemies wanting to destroy the others army HQ.

It felt very similar to Hive and yet I enjoyed this game a tremendous amount more. I really like that there are 4 factions in the base game that play vastly different and several expansions to flesh that out. Also NH! plays up to 4 players. What more could I ask for?

Sorry Hive, but I've found your replacement.

Samurai Swords

(Yes, it is *STUPID* they changed the entry name on BGG, but I digress)

You get your koku (mining), your sweeping territory grabs, but best of all, you get a nice version of the tiered combat system that made Samurai Swords a classic in the first place--expensive units fire first, and when you take casualties, do you sacrifice your expensive units who have already fired, or the meat shields who have yet to take their shots?

Plus, it's all this in 90 minutes as opposed to Samurai Sword's grueling 5 hours. Oh, and it has cards to spice up gameplay. And secret objectives.

It rocks, my friends. Sorry, but we had to let Samurai Swords go.

Letters from Whitechapel

In Letters of Whitechapel, a skillful Jack can avoid complete detection by the police. Can lead to very boring games.

Jack's goal is to run away. Police role is to catch him.

In Ninja, the ninja has to get in, find and accomplish his objectives, and get out. He can run or move quietly, climb walls, dispatch guards. The traitor can get guard drunken, use decoys. There are secrets passages too.

And the guards can listen to sounds, form patrols, plant traps, wake additionnal guards... etc.

All this make for a much more interesting game.

Bless it, Uno was an old family standby. But it got to the point where playing was simply mechanical, and any joy we got was from random luck of the draw.

Then No Thanks! came along, and completely blew Uno out of the water. Such a better filler game! Easy to teach AND has some interesting strategy.

Rise of Empires

I consider myself a Wallace fan and actually enjoyed Rise of Empires more than Through the Ages (Heresy, I know.). But ultimately I could not get over how unimportant most of the tiles were and felt that in the end I'd pretty much just played a convoluted, overlong version of El Grande.

Olympos takes the tile selection part of Rise of Empires, cleans it up, and makes the spatial part of the game servile to it. You're on the board to get resources which in turn get you the "discovery" tiles, which in turn get you points. It does quite admirably as a civ-lite game and plays in just 90 minutes. (A 3-player game yesterday was only an hour!)

Instead of Rise of Empires, you could play both Olympos and El Grande and still have enough time for a quick filler!

Fired all those find-the-traitor games.

Now before the poo-flinging begins, let me add some caveats:

1. I'm not talking about all games that have a traitor mechanic as part of the game. Rather I mean those games where finding/avoiding/thwarting the traitor is the whole game.

2. I'm really not a fan of these kinds of games. One Night is enough to entertain me and I'm done in 10-15 minutes.

Mr. Wallace fired "Clue".

P.I. is a deduction game for 2 to 5 players similar to Clue without the boring phase of roll and move.

I think it works better with 3 or more players. I like the artwork that remember famous movies like Casablanca and other great scenarios/characters from TV series or movies.

I have to say that I prefer as deduction game the masterpiece "Letters from Whitechapel". But this is an OK game for some groups and moments.

Red November

Red November was good, but it had some major drawbacks as played by our group:

* Fiddly timekeeping/turn order mechanic was slow to resolve and caused problems when people had to guarantee a fix happened without any item to help.
* So many different types of problems required a lot of bits to keep track of while resolving events.
* Soviet gnomish sub theme was a hoot for some, a real turn-off for MANY others
* Too compact; cramped board, small cards, small tiles, and despite the small components, fitting them in the box is a puzzle and a half.
* The "less deadly dying" rule was implemented in every game I played after the first; the player elimination mechanic just doesn't work well in a co-op.
* The game is won mostly on luck; everything has to go as right as can be expected of a game where everything's going wrong. Every die roll, every tile draw and every card turned over has to occur at just the right time for the players to have any prayer of being able to triage effectively.
* The game allows for the backstabbing mechanic of abandoning ship. This usually turns out to be a double-whammy, when the Kraken is looming and the player with the only Aqualung decides to leave his colleagues to their fate.

Pandemic solves most of the problems:

* The flow of a turn, and players' turn order, is much more straightforward. Do 4 actions, draw 2 cards, infect X cities, player to your left then does the same.
* The spread of the diseases is the only bad thing happening, and resolving each infection is easier.
* The disease theme can still be a turnoff, but it's far less offensive to most who have seen it (hey, your object is to save the world; who doesn't like that?).
* Board is nice and spacious (4 times bigger then RN); plenty of room for everything in most places (the OTB expansion's smaller tokens and petri dishes make it even better).
* No player elimination in any variant; even the Bio-Terrorist stays in the game when captured.
* The game is won with a little luck and some good planning and use of actions. Though the game is almost always lost due to a series of unfortunate events, good use of each player's Role strengths, and effective use of Actions and cards make this game far more winnable when well-played.
* Except for the Bio-Terrorist, everyone's all-for-one and one-for-all; you have to save the planet because you can't get off.
