Happy New Year, Geeks!

I'm curious. What game basically fired/pink slipped another game for you?

I.E. You enjoyed Candyland and played it a lot but when you got Chutes and Ladders, CL was tossed out the door.

How could this happen? Well, the above example isn't that great but maybe you learned a new game that was similar in mechanics but better than the game you were playing. So, you tossed the older one out!

I'm going to list the game that did the firing and mention which game was fired in the body of the text.

Nice work, Simon!

6/6/11 WOW, this GL has been a ton of fun b/c of all those that have contributed thoughts. Nice going! There was a suggestion to edit the list alphabetically. I thought it a great idea at this point for searching, etc. So, done.

1/5/10 1:30pm EST EDIT: I think this geeklist is going to get me FIRED...

Witch's Brew fired Citadels. WB offers a similar role selection mechanism, and adds a push-your-luck element regarding whether you take the sure thing or take a gamble for a better benefit. Even better, everyone selects their roles simultaneously, so there is a lot less down time.

Citadels plays up to 8 whereas WB only does up to 5, but I used Artscow to make decks for a sixth and seventh player with a few rules tweaks, and I think it works out well.

Cranium held a spot in our party game rotation for about 5 years...

...but then, my wife and I got too good at it for beginners to play with us, and the regulars got tired of it.

Thankfully, around that time, I had discovered
. With others on this list, I started firing older games and bringing new life to our gaming group (W&W among those new games).

Thank you, BGG, for being there for me to find 4.5 years ago.

Fired:

I'm sure Mage Wars could be very enjoyable with the right game group, but it just doesn't work with my game group (my family) at the moment. It is too heavy for my family. Turns drag out as AP sets in... I also only have enough bits, and pieces for a 1 vs. 1.

Wiz-War plays nice and quick, is relatively easy to explain, and supports more players right from the box. Even my wife enjoys playing it. For now, Wiz-War is the clear winner.

Fired Witch of Salem (which fired) and Space Hulk: Death Angel – The Card Game for solo "co-op" playing. The theme is more immersive. Set up takes a little longer & play time is about the same. But the main difference is that WoS randomly punches you in the face from time to time and the die can kill off your best guys in the FIRST round in SH: DA (making it pointless to continue), while Yggy feels more like controllable chaos. Plus, I just love Norse Mythology.

I prefer Ghost Stories when playing with others, but Yggdrasil is now my solo game.

For me Ys definitely fired the crap out of Aladdin's Dragons. I love these type of blind bidding games no doubt about it but the way it's put together in Ys is just a much more interesting game to me. I love the added market speculation aspect and...actually having POINTS for victory conditions. In AD it seems it's always a tie and whoever has the most scrolls then wins. I got tired of that.

Fired: Checkers

ZERTZ and TZAAR make me wonder why I ever played anything on a checkerboard, but it's ZERTZ that really booted checkers out of its tenuous hold on the lightweight piece-jumping abstract. TZAAR is one better, so I just had to hire it as well; there was enough left over from Checkers' bloated salary to bring in both of these newcomers.

Fired Zombies!!!

Now, it's not that Zombies!!! was really in need of firing; it was already in my 'For Trade' category. But I kept thinking "but...it could be useful to have a ton of zombie minis for some other game!"

Zombicide has a ton of much better sculpted zombie minis. Zombies!!! is now completely obsolete.

Unless, of course, what I really want is a zombie conga-line.

Fired . . .

I am a sucker for the Sim/Tycoon world building computer games. Both of these kinda scratch that itch. However, there can be little doubt that Zooloretoo does so in a more elegant and charming manner. I was never going to miss the blind bidding and inane title, but I do kinda miss some of O Zoo le Mio's nice bits.

because it's almost the same exact game, just streamlined, simplified and shortened.

Zooloretto Mini removes the single biggest obstacle that keeps Zooloretto from being a fantastic gateway game - the coins. Gone. And honestly, not missed. Everything else not related to coins is here - you're doing the same thing on your turns and your ultimate goal is the same. Scoring is simplified. It plays in about half the time.
