Happy New Year, Geeks!

I'm curious. What game basically fired/pink slipped another game for you?

I.E. You enjoyed Candyland and played it a lot but when you got Chutes and Ladders, CL was tossed out the door.

How could this happen? Well, the above example isn't that great but maybe you learned a new game that was similar in mechanics but better than the game you were playing. So, you tossed the older one out!

I'm going to list the game that did the firing and mention which game was fired in the body of the text.

6/6/11 WOW, this GL has been a ton of fun b/c of all those that have contributed thoughts. Nice going! There was a suggestion to edit the list alphabetically. I thought it a great idea at this point for searching, etc. So, done.

1/5/10 1:30pm EST EDIT: I think this geeklist is going to get me FIRED...

In its solo version, GOL uses a very similar tableau mechanic. So when I feel the itch to buy-and-slide cards from a tableau, this game has replaced SP.

I'm surprised no-one's mentioned the fact that, way back in the mists of time, almost all of us discovered that we just needed something more than masses of indistinguishable units being slaughtered by bad dice rolls. We needed readily identifiable units of all different types being slaughtered by bad dice rolls.

Fired

For me, that moment was as significant a change in my gaming life as moving on from, well,

Eventually, of course, I discovered

The game adds just the right amount of additional territories between Germany and the USSR, as well as the Pacific to create multiple new strategies without needlessly prolonging the game (because more complexity does not automatically equal more fun). Also is the game that revolutionized naval combat rules in the series.

Finally...this game has the best box art, bar none.

The new hire seemed promising, go-getter, popular with other employees, but in almost no time he wore out his welcome with his tedious, repetitive shtick. Newer employees would take to him while the veterans steered clear, and eventually people would dart into supply closets to avoid seeing him int he hallway. When he was finally let go, the whole office breathed a sigh of relief.

Fired BANG!

Can't believe this hadn't been posted already.

The dice game keeps all of the theme and good core ideas of the original game but vastly streamlines the whole affair. Games are over in about 10-15 minutes, no cryptic card icons to decipher (so easier to get casual gamers into it), no endless waiting for the game to end after you've been eliminated.

After playing the dice game I became furious at all the time I ever wasted on the original card game.

I'll get some flak for saying this, but this game fired War of the Ring (second edition). Play time is a large issue for me as my only friend that likes head-to-head two player games can't play long games, so this was an easy firing to make.

I understand a lot of people will disagree, and I'm fine with people enjoying War of the Ring more, but when time is a factor, this is a great solution.

Didn't so much fire as line up against the wall and shoot

Why waste hundreds of £s and thousands of hours buying, modelling and painting miniatures, only to see the edition and rules completely revised 5mins after you finish, obsolescing half you army, when you don't have to? Instead, spend £20 on enough units to field 10,000pt+ armies with a far more interesting and challenging game system that rewards competent generalship as opposed to army composition.

BF:GW is like the son who grew up, saw that his old man was an increasingly overweight and disgusting old git who was using up too many of the planet's valuable resources, and sent him to the retirement home. Or pushed him off a cliff.

the order placement with tokens/command cards in BoW feels so much better to me then the cards in BL/M:44. While I still really enjoy the classic feel of these earlier Borg games, BoW now fulfills my very-light wargame need so much better.

I prefer the theme of Battlelore, but I just can't help but feel that BL is a system that should have been brilliant but never was.

Many similarities. Great themes and components too, both games. To me, Belfort is much less solitair-ish, and more intuitive to play.
Stone Age takes half as much time to play, and, so, is more of a "family game" if length is a factor.
But I think that Belfort is more fun, and has more replayability.
