Happy New Year, Geeks!

I'm curious. What game basically fired/pink slipped another game for you?

I.E. You enjoyed Candyland and played it a lot but when you got Chutes and Ladders, CL was tossed out the door.

How could this happen? Well, the above example isn't that great but maybe you learned a new game that was similar in mechanics but better than the game you were playing. So, you tossed the older one out!

I'm going to list the game that did the firing and mention which game was fired in the body of the text.

Nice work, Simon!

6/6/11 WOW, this GL has been a ton of fun b/c of all those that have contributed thoughts. Nice going! There was a suggestion to edit the list alphabetically. I thought it a great idea at this point for searching, etc. So, done.

1/5/10 1:30pm EST EDIT: I think this geeklist is going to get me FIRED...

New release based on the Friedrich's game mechanics. The board looks amazing and it appears that the designer has streamlined the game somewhat and done away with some of the imbalances. In my eyes, Maria is the clear choice.

This was the first Euro-style game that I introduced my father to. We now have a standing agreement that whenever I come over to catch up with him I bring Memoir with me and he'll have the beer.

It takes less time than Risk, is less mean spirited, and offers a lot more variety in gameplay.

Memoir'44 mostly fired

The multiple characteristics of the ~17 (!) different units in Commands & Colors: Ancients required so many rule lookups that they were slowing down the game too much, for me. Memoir'44 made me play with the Commands & Colors system more often, thanks to its only 3 unit types.

Commands & Colors: Ancients might make a come back, one day, but this will imply being able to remember well enough all the necessary details about each unit type.

Fired Monopoly. It's more of a deliver goods than purchasing property type of game (factory and spaceport building aside), but it does roll-and-move a hell of a lot better than monopoly. Plus the theme is better, and the character you choose to play as does make a difference.

And there's no player elimination.

And the game doesn't last for-freaking-ever.

Sadly - I really like both, but find Merchants more accessible and polished, despite my love of meaty games. I had high expectations here for the revised Blackbeard but it just didn't play out. I'll revisit again sometime in the future.

Merchants is our go to pirate game, but I still think the holy grail is out there ...

MixUp is infinitely more challenging, especially since you might think the piece you are placing in the board is helping you, but it could turn out to immediately cause your opponent to win, if you aren't careful. It also has the additional 2 x 2 square formation as a winning possibility, in addition to the lines made horizontally, vertically, and diagonally. Lastly, the component quality is terrific, and the pieces store perfectly inside the board.

Fired - Builders: Middles Ages

The Builders: Middle Ages

My wife was the biggest proponent for this as the 2nd Place to Splendor. Now Monsoon Market is the #2.

I like Market because it is A) Just Cards, B) Easier to teach, and C) You cannot layback and win from behind by far too much; you could have a lot of projects waiting for tbe final touch in Builders. That is thematic, but it is looser of a mechanic.

The fewer moving parts, and an extent less rules, makes it fairly easy to get the first game right. Builders is still a fine game. But for what the three games have in common, and how they "feel", Builders is on the reserve list.

1) Splendor
2) Monsoon Market
3) The Builders: Middle Ages

This AWESOME game fired Heroquest, Space Hulk, and Space Crusade all in one fell swoop! It made any other dungeon crawl game of the time look like chopped liver...all due to the competetiveness it introduced amongst the "otherwise allies." Rather than a single declared bad guy, each player took turns playing the bad guy, earning points in the process and building resentment amongst the other players all the while. With great fiction, cool characters, fun weaponry, and 10 very well play-tested and balanced scenarios, this game provided more fun for the $20 I paid for it than has all of my enittre board game collection. This is seriously the one game we have played where I have watched grown men get pissed off and punch each other due to a back stab or a bail out.

Such a shame they never did an expansion...and everybody that ever took over the material tried to "expand" upon it. The material and story was fine as it was, although other doomtroopers, apostle forces, and scenarios and tiles/card could have made this game an absoulute juggernaut.

I was sooooo upset at FFG's failed attempt. They took Cosmic Wimpout and simply "expanded" it. They tried to "reinvent" MUTANT, and that was their downfall from day one!
