Everyone has different criteria for keeping his or her collection. Some are limited by space. Some show more self-restraint than others. And others have never-ending quests for elusive "Grail Games."

But I'm creating this list for people to show off which game is their "crowning jewel." Which one is your favorite? Which was most satisfying to obtain? Was it a bargain find? Is it a long-lost classic? Is it a high-end collectible?

I'm not going to try to restrict definitions. Just post whichever game you're most happy to have in your collection. Please feel free to provide commentary.

I really didn't get back into boardgaming until September of 2009, when I bought Settlers on a whim, and subsequently realized how much fun the hobby could be. I steadily increased my games in both number and complexity (up to about 40 now, in just 3 months), and after doing some research on games that were well received, played well with 2 and more players, as well as games that appeared to fit my tastes, I came across Goa.

I saw the threads about a reprint, but knew that I'd be remiss if I didn't get myself a copy of the game in its original edition. So, I stalked eBay and the BGG Marketplace for a bit, and after losing out on an eBay auction or two, I decided to just make an offer on the BGG Marketplace.

Fortunately, it was accepted, and its original owner graciously sent it to me (though they later told me they were a little sad they let it go). While it is by no means "expensive" compared to a lot of other games that are out there you could spend money on, it's the most expensive game I've bought to date, it's out of print, and I'm glad I got it.

My girlfriend and I really love it. Well worth the price of admission.

I got this from a friend early in 2009 for a great price (still expensive, but not at much as it's going for now).

This is one of my favorite games, both because it looks so beautiful and because I love the game play. It took a couple of tries to get the rules right, but even playing it wrong was a joy. I'm even working on some player mats for it I like it so much!

Ok, I have to add 2. I got this for my wife. She LOVES it! I have a hard time getting her to try new games, but if it has flowers on it, she's hooked before she even knows how it plays.

When she saw it she was determined to get a copy. She wouldn't stop looking! But she could never find one that wasn't totally outrageously priced or had to pay a lot for shipping from another country.

One night I was on the geek and a copy came up for a high but good price in the US. I purchased within an hour of it being posted. The search was ended and my wife was very pleased.

She plays it with my Mom every time we get together. She plays it with her friends, with me, with my daughter -- anyone who's interested.

We even took it on our 10th anniversary trip and played it on the ferry to Victoria, BC.

Best purchase I ever made!

While I have played this game and enjoyed it several times, there are others that I have enjoyed more and/or played more. Why is EiA my Crown Jewel? Because it was a birthday present from the gal who became my wife. She even offered to learn how to play it so we could do it together, but as I wanted her to stick around, I didn't take her up on it. Given how competitive she is and how much she hates learning new games, it would have been a nightmare.

The game is nice to look at, and has some well thought out and tested systems for a genre lacking them - true squad level wargaming.

And yes, I have Soldiers: Man-to-Man Combat in World War II and am curios about Unpublished Prototype

This one was a tough one for me but I will go with this one. I was actually able to locate a new and old versions with different boards. One has some water damage but I got a really good deal on what is usually a $100+ game.

Runner up was The Muppet Show Game as I am a huge Muppet fan and was stoked to find a copy of this game...doubt I will ever play it but it is awesome to have. Take that back I WILL play this with my kid very soon.

2nd Runner Up has to be Mr. Jack as it was really one of the first games I discovered here on the geek and after more than 400 plays it has been the best game yet that I can play anytime anywhere.

For about 9 months, this was my crown jewel, but it became tarnished when I read the rules and realized it was over my head. Either that, otr I just wasn't grasping some fundamental mechanic(s) that made the game playable.
That happened to me a lot in the 80s--Dark Stars (SimCan) was one that I was told would require a PhD in Astrophysics to understand the rules. It didn't look THAT intimidating to me, but I still never got 'round to playing it.

I love this game enough to have bought two copies at a very stiff price. I also worked with the designer to rewrite the English rulebook (downloadable from the Geek). SOH is simple enough to bring the 18xx system within reach of the average player and short enough not to outstay its welcome. The production is also beautiful.

There are a few others I would LOVE to have if I could afford them (particularly the War of the Ring collector's edition), but if I could only keep one game out of my collection it would be my AoS set.

I even have a copy of 1st edition I picked up cheap after 3rd came out in case anything ever happens to my 2nd edition copy that I play with. Because I have no interest in playing AoS with plastic trains

There are plenty of games I have that I truely love and would never part wth...but I am glad I made the investment in this game for all the joy it has brough to me, my friends and my family!

An original pristine Games Research edition of this beauty. Easily the best looking edition of this game ever published. I even have the plastic inserts.

It took me years to assemble this, and about four sets gave their life to the cause. But it was worth it. And unlike many of the grail games I own, I'll play this one on occasion.

Edit:

Some additional Gems:

An original 1965 edition of Nuclear War. I believe it's from the same con I met Douglas Malewicki, though the events were independent of each other.
A complete and in excellent condition Eon set of Cosmic Encounter in the big box.
Mint copies of both War in Europe and War in the Pacific (first edition) in the detergent boxes.
Mint copies of Drang Nach Osten! and Unentschieden in the large ziplock bags.

It has all been played, and everything is kind of worn but I wouldn't get rid of this game for anything. In the early and mid 90's this game got so much play that it was constantly set up on my table. While I don't play it as often now, this one will always hold a special plate in my geek heart.

I don't suppose anyone has a copy this expansion that they would like to send my way? Yeah, I didn't think so.

Due to lack of both time to play and space to keep a game on the table for more then a few hours I am more of a hoarder then a player. Maybe that will change when the kids are leaving the nest (in about 18 years).

This however is the crown jewel of my collection. After dodging a few eBay scams I finally manage to buy an unpunched game. It might be my retirement game.

The game that took me into the boardgame hobby in around 1974 aged 10.

With the additional rules printed later in The General adding some command and control and decent morale rules, a surprisingly good game still not that it makes the table very often at all nowadays.

A difficult decision, as I have many rarer games that others hold up a Holy Grails (including original versions of HT 1823 Northern Board and HT 1853, GW Apocalypse, Raiders & Traders, AH Civilisation (including Western Board Expansion), collectors games (Robert the Bruce anyone?) and games that mean more to me (my handmade chess board for instance) but as this is the game that took me into what has been a great hobby to be part of for the past 37 years it deserves the place in my heart that it still holds.

I would never part with my old battered copy.
