Oh, the cult of the new. The hot. Mr Barling got it on his current cartoon ...

As a matter of fact, new game designs are usually more probably to our taste than "vintage", outmoded stuff. They bring you the newest materials, "state of the art" graphic design, the "post-modern" touch of cleverly interwoven mechanisms - and they are cool right now. In one word: hot.

Then, of course, there are the old ones, the ones you know and love for years and years, decades, centuries, aeons. Your "ten"s for all time.

And then there are:
Games you discovered when they were already "outdated". You were sceptical because of their age, eventually got them (or a chance to play) and thought: "Hey, WHAT A GREAT GAME! Though it is published ten years ago and not too many know about it at all!"
This is a list about these games.

Now, feel free to add!
Show us your "new old ones", gems from the past not known to many, but worth trying! Do the anti-hype, tell us a story, create a buzz for the "old"!

Picked this up in a thrift store for a dollar out of curiosity, and it turns out to be a brilliant four-player abstract: a variable-piece-taking game like chess, but with an bit of area control, combined with an absolutely cutthroat negotiation/backstabbing aspect. Wonderfully vicious and very deep.

I bought this one cheap a couple of years ago. Lots of fun! Very luck driven with dice, but I love pigs, and this one has plenty! Really cute and fun 2 player game that even the most experienced gamer can lose by throwing a few bad dice rolls!

Beware the HOG...

A great push your luck dice game and aptly named.

I got it in my head to collect Spiel des Jahres winners, so I picked this one up. I didn't really expect much based on the low-ish ratings here.

This game really works well! It scales across 3-6 players very well, has attractive components that catch the eye, and the auctions in the gamer variant are simple yet clever. It also has a really nice, simple variant for families with kids that still works great.

The dice movement is a little hard to explain, and the map of Germany and nearby cities sans-borders is hard for this Canadian. But my group and I have really enjoyed this game and I am glad to have it in my collection.

Picked this one up over the summer (for free, actually.) Complete copy in good condition. What a fun game, chaotic to be sure, but definitely a thematic classic. Some of the graphics are a little dated but are still endearing as ever and work very well.

Manhattan was published back in 1994, but I didn't play it until 2009. Despite the fact that some really good games have been produced in the last half dozen years, Manhattan is still a blast. A card driven, area control game, I think Manhattan gets overlooked (and underrated) on BGG because its older. I love the end game look, where the board bears a strong resemblance to a real city scape. The game is perfectly simple to teach, but to win requires keeping a number of plans in play at all times and wisely choosing which to further on any given turn. Come on, how about a little love for this "outdated" gem? laugh

Yeah, I could have listed Sleuth or Acquire from the same time period and also from Sid Sackson but everyone has heard of those games.

I picked up Venture on a whim. When we played it, Venture floored the whole table.

The cards have amazing functionality, able to contain a lot of information on a limited space, the choices are deep and the game is a lot of fun.

As I understand it (and, please, correct me if I'm wrong!), it's been out of print for ages and that's a shame because it is a really fine game.

A game I hadn't heard of till seeing it in a geeklist somewhere and just new I had to have it, and it didn't disappoint! I traded...something for it, damned if I can remember.

It's a great little two-player game (that has a partnership game I haven't gotten to try yet) in the "tile-laying" vein, though it uses cards instead. There's some room for clever play and the way the "board" fills is interesting since the length/width isn't set till more cards are put out. Also has some very fun scenarios to try out, and those coins...probably some of the best bits I've seen for money.

If you get it though, don't bother with the beginner's game, go straight to advanced.

I could be obvious and add Loupin' Louie, but here's one from my childhood I reacquired via the eBay. It's frantic and fun, and it's fun to see how competitive people get. The slapping hands work surprisingly well, and the mechanical spinner is a heckuva piece of toy engineering.

Edit: Story with the game. It turns out my wife and I both had this one as kids. I bought it again because she mentioned she'd love to play it again. It has since been a huge hit, though a friend or two can't resist smacking somebody with the suction cups, hoping to cause hickeys or other harm.

I searched for this puppy after seeing it in Faidutti's Ideal Game Library. People love playing this, and it's been described as "a carnival game without any prizes." It makes you wish tupperware had made more games!

Edit, my story with the game: eBayed this one after reading about it, and had so much fun playing with different groups. I've even played it with the staff I work with. After paying for it on eBay (not an embarrassing amount, but a bit more than nothing), I saw the edge of the board on a shelf in a Roped Off section of the thrift store. In a rare act of social disobedience, I lifted the rope, grabbed the game, bought it, and felt an amusing sense of successful rebelliousness for the rest of the day. That second copy cost all of $.50.

Electronic Talking Mystery Mansion. Just look at this game! Hundreds of thousands of pieces of furniture! Fantasy Flight couldn't fit more plastic in that box! And a talking electric doohickey?

If you bought a new game at your FLGS with this many components, it would cost approximately a gazillion dollars.

This game is also surprisingly fun, with a neat randomization gimmick--every time you play, the furniture is randomly placed as you enter a room. The hints, some secret and some private, are also random each game.

So how much will this massive plastic plaything cost you? It looks like you could get one off eBay for less than $10.

Edit, my story with the game: I bought this when I couldn't resist buying any complete game in decent shape at the thrift store. This one ended up being one of the rare gems.

Material World (1995) - a great 5-Player game. The rules are terrible, tzhe pieces are bad, the bookkeeping is annoying. But the game itself is very tense, great central mechanic (the number of actions you can take equals the number of "points" you need to gain a level - too many actions and you have to archieve more than you really can) and war truly as a last resort.
Very interesing game!

Other notably mentions from the back of my head:
Das Amulett
Anno 4000 (Great with three, you have to tweak the endgame condition though)
Mr. Moneymaker

Played this last weekend. There were about ten playing. It's very close to Liar's Dice, and actually was introduced as that. However, this version uses two normal dice and some score keeping tokens (we used pennies). As the game went on, I warmed up to it more and more.

This might be the oldest game so far on the list, it's listed as "published" in 600.

Picked this up on ebay two weeks ago. My boys and I are loving this game!

This was the final release of (Monarch) Avalon Hill, and I recall it was panned by most 'serious' boardgamers. The funny thing is that it was really ahead of it's time. The game is card driven (no dice) and can be played solo, cooperative or competitive.

I picked it up because I was looking for a cooperative game my boys would like and I wasn't disappointed.

Fun, in a Talisman-esque sort of way.

Hidden under the ecolo-schoolish chrome, there is a real and nasty network game hiding. Plus it is Kramer, but at the time I played it, I must say I had no idea who he was.

A game I am waiting to find for my kids now. Can't wait to play this with them. As a side notice, it is great for adults too, when played with kids. It really shines for families, I'd probably not play it with gamers only.

1993, a game I learned last summer.

A very simple mechanism, a kind of beginner Knizia, a totally pasted-on theme and a game that works very well. My wife especially likes it, quite probably it’s because she always wins.

Honorable mentions - Games that are known by many but otherwise are old enough to be included here (and I have learned them last year) :

Tichu(1991, based on much older games) ranked #37
Modern Art (1992) the classic auction game is 18 years old and is still #67 at the rankings
Oh Hell! (1930) a very good game with a standard deck of cards
Sticheln (1993) Nasty little card game.

It has definitely a vintage feel, with a lot of counters and dice rolling, but it doesn't bog down. Playable in a couple of hours, not too deep, but very thematic, with the right amount of chaos and drama. Very entertaining. Probably my favourite vintage game. It was a revelation for me when I first played it, a couple of years ago. I bought my own copy (there were some floating on eBay, not too expensive), but sadly it hasn't seen any play yet...

Found this in a charity shop, saw the SDJ recommendation (1985) label and thought I'd give it a chance.

Glad I did, this is a great, quick, 2 player abstract dice game, with a good balance of luck and skill.

You each have a square board filled with numbered tiles and two specials. Each turn you shake two dice, turning over tiles that match the total, doubles count double. First player to finish wins. The opponent counts up their remaining total, then swap boards.

I was a big Avalon Hill fan when this was released. I also had and loved Mr. President, so when I saw a new Avalon Hill games about American presidential elections I bought it straight away. It was only after I got it that I noticed it was actually about the primaries. And boy is it an ugly drab looking game.

I must have had it at least three of four years before I actually played it and found it was actually a pretty good game.

A lost cause I know. I seem to be the only one on here who likes this game. I think it's a great game. Sell cars and race around the board based on the profits you make. It's bit like Fair Means or Foul (Hoity Toity ) in that to do well you need to play the meta game. That is work out what the other players will do and do something else.
