That's a stupid reason to buy a game... but I did. Add your own

I have a good idea of what I like in a game, BUT there are still occasions where I will buy a game just for the bits, the art, or the theme. I am still growing my collection so it hasn't seemed to be a problem. Until now. My collection of unplayed games is growing and I have decided to be more selective in 2010
However, the following games were purchased for the following silly reasons...
My first geeklist.

I was in the store I then considered my comic book shop (now thought of as my FLGS) with a friend. They had a big game sale going on, and this one caught my eye. My friend said, "I wonder...if you took this and put it in the same box as Monopoly, would it explode?" I just had to know.
Spoiler (mouseover to reveal): It didn't.

I thought that when I didn't like it, my kids could play with the mice.
But I still haven't played it yet.

I bought this expansion without having completed even one game of Descent: Journeys in the Dark yet, because my kids love playing with the bits and making up adventures, and their adventures really needed a map and outdoor tiles.
(It should be noted that I still have yet to get through a single game of Descent.)

I bought this at an auction because I loved the auctioneer's hilarious description of how the ship starts nosing down with certain die rolls until the Carpathia eventually pops up on the horizon. I have since learned that this description seems to be something of an inside joke among game auctioneers--

I bought this game because I had read an excellent review in a gaming magazine. Now you may think that this actually is a rather good reason to buy a game. Well, later I learned that the game was published by the same company as the magazine and that the review was nothing but promotion. The board is beautiful, but the game is just boring.

It was $33.60 on Amazon and I had a gift card for exactly $33.67.
Also, for some reason, I still hold out hope of being able to get my friends to play something, *anything* other than party games.

I buy every waterproof game I see so I can play them in the jacuzzi and swimming pool.
I have picked up several clear card games including Gloom, generic plastic poker cards, and UNO H2O. My favorites, though, tend to be bakelite and boardless abstract strategy games like Hive, Army of Frogs, Trax, Palago, Tantrix, and Zertz.

I purchased it because I had the ability to 'buy' it when no one else could after I won store credit. The $125 price tag was a bit of a deterrent. I had no idea what the game was about or whether I would like it, but I knew I would be the only one in my group who owned it - and that was the biggest draw for me. I wanted to be the first to get a game instead of the 30th.

Turns out though, the game is great. I like it and am so glad I got it.

Purchased for the artwork, for the theme and for the fact you can get corrupted.
Never played so far as the rules proved to be complicated. (And in German, though luckily enough English version was available on the website)

...because I had been in the shop for ages and felt that I ought to buy something, and even though I knew my chances of persuading the group to play it were slim, however interesting, (very, actually) the game seemed.
This was not the only game I acquired on that basis, I have to admit.

Because our relatives live in Carson City, Nevada, and because they and we are distant relatives of Kit Carson (not necessarily something to be proud of if you know about the "Long Walk"), and because I thought he would be one of the characters, but he isn't--they are all generic. It may or may not be a decent game. Who cares? Location, location, ....
(Besides, if I don't like it I'll give it to them as a present! )

I saw it on a geeklist that was something like, "Games that are waterproof." I bought it because it had see-through cards and as GIMMICKY as that is, I thought it was the coolest thing ever.
It's not a great game, sadly. I even left it back in California when I moved to MA but I'm glad I gave it a try (and yes, the transparent cards are really cool!).

It was on a clearance table.... and I figured, how bad could it be?
And it even comes with a plastic rocket!
But, somehow, I haven't had the nerve to actually get it to the table.

Completeness.
Being a huge fan of Formula De, and owning every other track, I couldn't not have this. Unfortunately, I only found out about it long after it was out of print and stock. Ebay is your friend, and bless the person who decided to put it up with a buy it now price of $40 after I lost out when it went up to $70.
As a side note, I believe my hunt for this game led me here a few years ago.

I do medieval re-enacting (live action, not choreographed) but without a car I haven't been able to get to many events lately. So there was an event I was set to go to via public transit, Friday morning a huge nor easter comes through and they cancel the event. I was in a really bad mood about missing an event. So I decided to cheer myself up by getting a game. Was interested in a naval game, liked the theme and went for it. Definitely a good grab.

Some time ago I was so frustrated not to get a copy of Case Blue from MMP that I called inmediatelly to my local store and asked to reserve me a copy of this game, which I knew he had in stock. This is what I call a compulsory buy

I knew it was out of print. I already had Monsters Menace America, so I got this to see if it might become collectable

I bought it for the plot.
The 3rd Act, where they reveal everyone's secrets, is just so slapstick hilarious!
Scarlett: Oh yeah, Colonel Mustard has secret too! Has steel plate in head. Only steel plate is magnetized.
(Scarlett holds up a gun from across the room. It flies across the room and latches onto Colonel Mustard's head.)
Scarlett: What kind of spy can't dodge bullets?

I've bought games in the past based only on box size not even caring what the game is about. Why? So they sit level and even with others on my shelves.
Yes I know its a sickness lol.
