I have a good idea of what I like in a game, BUT there are still occasions where I will buy a game just for the bits, the art, or the theme. I am still growing my collection so it hasn't seemed to be a problem. Until now. My collection of unplayed games is growing and I have decided to be more selective in 2010 However, the following games were purchased for the following silly reasons...

My first geeklist.

Picked this one up because it was on clearance, I LOVED the books (Xanth by Piers Anthony) and I was on a game buying binge because my wife was pregnant and I was grabbing anything around me that screamed irresponsible... well, not anything... Just games... really...

There was an open copy on display, and I was drawn to the herbal-medicinal smell of the tiles. The game was like MahJongg for Dummies, and I already had several MahJongg sets, including a very nice one from Hong Kong, so I left it on the shelf. Can't put my finger on it, but that fragrance, it haunts you. The very next day, I drove by the FLGS after work and picked up my very own copy of RumJong.

I did it because all the cool kids do it! cool

I picked up Yetisburg after reading an entertaining review and laughing out loud at the title until I shed joyous man-tears.

It's actually not bad if you don't care about who wins, and are instead looking forward to a bunch of exploding mastodons and angry yetis. I doubt I'll ever trade it.

I purchased this great game just to get out of the shop and away from the poor clerk who had the worse meth teeth I've seen in a very long time.

Mind you, this individual was really nice and very energetic about board games in general but leaping lizards his/her teeth were worse than Shane Macgowan of the Pogues.

When my wife bought this for me, I had played Settlers of Catan (the German version) but I had never heard the term Euro Game and knew nothing about the genre or about Carcassonne. I thought she bought it for me as a joke. Let me explain why.

Earlier in the year we had travelled around central Europe (Austria, Germany, France, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Hungary) in a rental car with no schedule. Finding decent, affordable lodging every day and finding decent meals as VEGETARIANS without being able to speak hardly a word of the local languages was a huge daily chore. We later came up with this great joke about "hunting and gathering" in Europe, hence I thought she was joking when she gave me "Hunters and Gatherers." (No disrespect is meant to any European person or country; we were just young and naive and American.)

Anyway, great game. Great genre. And now we have lots more cool games. And now I'm finding my way around BGG. Life is good.

A big group of my college friends and I were attending Gen-Con, and had an inside joke about playing "A short game of Magic Realm". So I bought the game. When we all got back to the hotel, I casually asked (at 2 AM) if anyone would be interested in "A short game of Magic Realm" before bed. Of course, everyone said "Yea, sure" KNOWING that no-one had a copy of Magic Realm with them. Then I triumphantly pulled out the copy I had just bought and made everyone play it!

All of a sudden one day I started having flashbacks to my childhood. I used to own this game about space... and I think it had something to do with real estate too. It seemed too complicated, so I just played with the little rocket and fuel pieces.

Well now that I'm all grown up and into board games, I might as well get it and give it a go (despite the fact that it essentially looks like space Monopoly). The copy I bought online was missing a couple property cards, but whatever--actually found most of those being offered by an art student who had some as "odds and ends" for their abstract works. Go figure.

I was at a game store where I'd just turned in Magic cards for $5 worth of credit. I could have put it towards a game I'd heard of or wanted, or just gotten dice. But I decided to buy a random small game because the owner said it was fun.

As it turns out, it *is* fun, but there's also no reason I couldn't just play this with 4 different decks of playing cards.

I'm definitely not a wargamer. At least, not anymore.
Not since the days my older brother tried to get me into playing Advanced Squad Leader. Which was just the latest in a fairly long line of Avalon Hill wargames I'd played with him since he first discovered AH and bought several classics like Richthofen's War, Panzerblitz, Tactics II, Luftwaffe, and several others.
As the next oldest son, I was the natural convenient opponent for him, which suited me just fine for several years.

Grateful as I am to my brother and Avalon Hill for introducing me to the boardgaming hobby, he kept moving into more and more detailed and complicated wargame systems, ending with ASL. While I got more into games like Merchants of Venus, Magic Realm, and Wizards. And later into Eurogames. I don't think I've played any kind of pure wargame in 20 years.

All that being said, the reason I bought this 2-player, magazine-sized wargame no more than a year or so ago was:

It has the Coolest, Most Colourful Die-cut Counter sheet I've ever seen!

I bought the basic Starship Troopers Miniatures box set after months of looking on eBay after telling myself I would only pay 1/2 MSRP. I never had any intention of playing, I just wanted some good Space Marine troops to paint up and eventually use in some type of game.

My painting skills aren't as steady as I'd like them to be, and now that the game is out of print (along with 4 other boxes of squads) I don't want to mess them up while my learning curve flattens out. So now they're still sitting on shelves, still shrinkwrapped.

I don't even want to think of what I've gotten "in case it goes out of print"...
