This is the monthly list for Columbia Games P500 Games.
First off, I apologize for being a bit late this month. I found out at the start of the month that I was being considered for a promotion so I've been busy preparing for that. (I did get the job by the way.) Anyway, this month there was some excellent growth for a few of the games and minor loss for one title.
In Columbia News, the latest issue of Dicey Business said that Julius Caesar (formerly Rome vs Rome) will be published in March and preorders will not be accepted after Feb 28th. The game has also had some changes made which I'll discuss on its geeklist item.
Here are the stats for the month:
Please be sure to check out the other excellent preorder geeklists: GMT's New P500 GMT's Reprints P500 MMP's P500 MMP's ASL P500 Legion P500 Lock 'n Load Winter P500
Don't forget to subscribe to these geeklists by using the Columbia P500 subscription thread.
And now, onto the preorders. Be sure to visit Columbia Games GamePlan website to preorder these titles at: http://www.columbiagames.com/cgi-bin/query/cfg/allgameplan-w... Your comments are what make these lists fun so please join in the discussion.

Current Orders: 355
Net Increase: 18 (5.34%) Percent of P500 Orders Needed: 71.00% Preorder Price: $40.00 $52.00 Designer: Justin Thompson
There were some big updates for Julius Caesar this month. First, the game now has more preorders then any other title on Columbia's gameplan. Next, there was the name change from Rome vs Rome. The new name presumably makes the game part of Columbia's series of games based on the plays of Shakespeare.
Next up is the price increase. The preorder price went up from $40 to $52. This is due in part to the game board doubling in size from four panel to eight panel and a high quality deck of cards, as discussed here. I don't know if people who preordered it at the original price will be charged that price or the newer one.
This month on the Columbia forums, Justin Thompson talked about some changes to the game's mechanics.
Justin Thompson wrote: Good Question! The cards are used to Move troops, Build a Block or Step up a damaged block. There are 5 events in the deck as well. It is almost exactly like it was before but you play the cards like Hammer in that you both lay a card and the high card goes first. If you tie you roll off. If you both play an event at the same time neither event happens. You currently start with 6 cards and there is 5 years of play for a total of 30 turns. Two months ago, there was also an interview with the designer on BoardGameNews last month. The transcript is posted here. Boardgame News interview on R v R
Notes from the company webpage: [q]Rome vs Rome brings the drama of the Roman Civil War to life. Players take control of the legions of Caesar or Pompey and fight to rule Rome as Emperor. There are two campaigns: "Crossing the Rubicon" in which Caesar faces Pompey, and "Augustus", in which Caesar's nephew Octavian battles with Marc Antony and Cleopatra.

Current Orders: 340
Net Increase: -1 (-0.29%) Percent of P500 Orders Needed: 68.00% Preorder Price: $48.00 Designers: Grant Dalgliesh and Tom Dalgliesh
This title lost one order this month. There's not a lot of news in any of the forums but there was quite a bit of discussion in the CSW and CG forums a few months ago with some information about the rules.
Notes from the company webpage:
Quote: Shiloh was a fascinating ACW battle fought in April 1862. A surprise Confederate attack, led by Albert Sydney Johnson, nearly swept encamped Union defenders into the Tennessee River. The next day, a reinforced Union army counter-attacked and drove the CSA line back in confusion and retreat. A CSA victory would have ruined the career of General Ulysses S. Grant. But the battle instead ended with a Union victory, the death of Albert Sydney Johnson, and the eventual demise of Confederate hopes in the West. Both days of Shiloh can be played separately or together.

Current Orders: 310
Net Increase: 15 (5.08%) Percent of P500 Orders Needed: 62.00% Preorder Price: $16.00 Designers: Alan R. Moon, John Gordon, Lance Gutteridge, Ron Gibson, and Tom Dalgliesh
After months of stagnation, this title suddenly received a huge burst of orders. There's no new info this month, other then a price increase from $16.00 to $20.00 (Edit: There was no price increase, I just misread the gameplan page). From what I've read, it sounds like Columbia could print it just about anytime they want with or without the P500 numbers. They mentioned in an earlier email they'd like to have it out in time for WBC, which didn't happen so we'll have to wait and see when they decide to print it.
In the January issue of Dicey Business, Columbia Games mentioned that this would likely be the next game published after Richard III: The Wars of the Roses and that preorders for the game will be closed soon. If you want it at the discount price now is the time to preorder!
Quote: 2009 will be the year Slapshot is republished. We are now finalizing production decisions. We will definitely have the game back in print in time for the World Boardgaming Championships this summer.
Slapshot preorders will be closed soon. Notes from the company webpage:
Quote: Slapshot is a wheeling, dealing game for hockey nuts. Each player assumes the role of team manager. The object is to skillfully manage your team into the playoffs and then win the championship. During the regular season you can improve your team with drafts and trades, but injuries can upset the best of plans. Ultimately, your skill as manager determines if your team wins or loses.
Slapshot includes 49 zany hockey nuts like Slash Gordon, Puck Rogers, Ian Jury, Cheap Shot, Le Goon, and Jack the Tripper.

Current Orders: 275
Net Increase: 1 (0.36%) Percent of P500 Orders Needed: 55.00% Preorder Price: $48.00 Designer: Gary Selkirk
This title had a little bit of growth this month, reclaiming a bit of the loss from last month. In the Columbia forums, Gary Selkirk mentioned that once the game is published, he will likely begin work on a sequel.
Gary Selkirk wrote: When, if, the game is published, it will consist primarily of Jackson's 1862 campaign. We will work on the 1864 campaign and submit it as an add on at a later date. Getting the 1862 campaign refined and completed seems to be a job in itself. Unfortunately, he also mentioned that the game's design was on hold for awhile, though it sounds as if he's still working on it and will hopefully be providing some AARs within the next month.
Gary Selkirk wrote: We,ve put a hold on the design of this game for awhile. We're into playing more lately. Just felt like taking a break and get into some serious combat for a change. However, we'll take up the task again for SHENANDOAH and provide some AAR, etc. My primary objective is to get the 3rd column done. The column on the right hand side of every page. I expect there'll be a lot of explanations and examples needed. Stand by, you stalwarts of the Stonewall Brigade. We'll have AAR aplenty in a month or so. If only Columbia would add some more info to the website so we could all get a look at what this game is going to be like. I'd love to read through the rules.
I think its odd that the designer is doing so much to promote his game (on the Columbia forums) yet it is not seeing a lot of preorder love. If you're interested in the ACW, I'd encourage you to add an order for this.
Notes from the company webpage:
Quote: Shenandoah covers the remarkable Valley Campaign of May/June 1862. Led by Thomas 'Stonewall' Jackson, a smaller Confederate army with audacious marching and fighting paralyzed and defeated three enveloping Union armies. Military students worldwide study Jackson's strategy and tactics to this day.
The CSA player has the advantage of central position, but must use it aggressively to prevent the Union armies from combining against him. The USA player has a clear advantage in numbers, but must cope with a command system that penalizes the wide separation of his three forces.

Finally we end with the rumors of upcoming games which may possibly show up on the P500 page in the coming months. There haven't really been any new rumors this month so this entry is a repeat of last month.
On the game page for Richard the III, Columbia mentions that it is the first in a series of wargames based on the histories of Shakespeare, with potential titles including Julius Caesar, Macbeth, and Henry V.
My personal hope is for Henry V to pop up next since I'd love to see a Battle of Agincourt block game. Julius Casear and Macbeth (while not really historical plays but we'll ignore that for now) may be interesting as well. The Battle of Philippi was the final battle in the Wars of the Second Triumvirate and could make a great block game. I'm not as sure on MacBeth since the battle of that game was fictional (the whole moving forest thing) but the real MacBeth was involved in a few battles which I unfortunately don't know much about.
Update: Rome vs Rome had it's name changed this month to Julius Caesar. There was no mention about the Shakespeare series from Columbia but perhaps this game is now considered part of it.
Also, on the Columbia forums, Carl Willner, one of the designers of Texas Glory, mentioned that he is working on a new Napoleonic Game on the Battle of Borodino. Once he gets it submitted to Columbia, they'll be adding it to the GamePlan.
Hopefully we'll be adding a few new titles to the list soon and seeing a few of the above games published.

I have no idea if other publishers have looked at the games or not. All of the games sat on the gameplan list for a long time with little or no movement. Though all of them had achieved at least the number of orders that Julius Caesar has now (with the possible exception of The Road to Dien Bien Phu). I'm sorry to have seen Austerlitz: December 1805 and The Road to Dien Bien Phu go but I was never interested in Send in the Marines. My guess is that the games were probably a bit underdeveloped and that there wasn't enough interest in the games to develop them.
