Just what the title says. That's what this geeklist is all about.

Why is there such a trend to add so much luck into games nowadays? I wish I understood it. Good for you for reading this far, you'll want to keep reading...trust me. Actually, this list isn't about games that are pure luck at all. You see, I have this theory that there are a number of people out there who occasionally don't bother reading the header text on geeklists, or at best they just glance at the first few sentences of it. People sometimes just read the title and jump right in (I've done it myself before.) Because of this, there are a number of times I see people post things that don't apply at all because they failed to read the full explanation. So, if you are reading this, here's how I will know. Post a game that you actually like, instead of hate. But in the text of your item, give some fake explanation of why you hate the game and think it's pure luck.

Now we don't want this to be too easy for the non-readers to figure out, so make sure you don't post a game with no luck whatsoever like Chess. Something with a little luck will do. What will make it even better is if you sport a "fan" microbadge for the game at the same time you're posting the game you are claiming to hate. And if you are a user who missed this text the first time and jumped in to post a game or comment without realizing the trick of the geeklist...be a good sport, laugh at yourself, and leave it up for everyone else to chuckle at. But don't give away the secret, let users discover it for themselves.

Please post your own.

Honestly, what is it that people like about this game? I mean, yes, the theme is well-integrated, but I can draw 8 tiles and come up with nothing! Meanwhile my opponent will draw 2 tiles from the same bag and get 10 points! It doesn't matter how much effort you put into minimizing your risk, it's still going to come down to which player is luckier on the tile draws. This game is like glorified LCR!

An exercise in frustration. You spend the first several turns drawing nothing but move and battle tokens, while your opponents are ganging up on you and aiming their units right at your base. Everything's just out of your control. And even if you do get the guys you want, more often than not you'll just be staring at the board for 5 minutes trying to figure out how something happens in its convoluted battle system anyways. Any fun it might have had in a light-hearted luckfest just kind of goes away once you try to decipher that inscrutable mess.

Sorry, I must be the only person that isn't in love with this game. Yes, there are multiple ways to win and you have to adjust to the cards you get. That's the problem. Luck of the draw determines the winner. Assuming everyone playing is at the same skill level and familiarity with the cards, I can just as easily lose as win if my first couple of cards are sweet or suck. And this is a rich get richer game, so if you don't keep up, its hard to come back.

Sure there is something like better starting hands than others but basicly you can only win if the cards are nice to you.

There is nothing I hate more than buying a Power Plant and then having the one that replaces it be solid gold for everyone else. I end up with a clunker and someone else benefits through no fault of my own but the sheer luck of the draw. PS is a fine game, but this glaring flaw in the design turns it into a near luckfest.

I'm sure that many will disagree, but I've come to believe that, with players of comparable skill, it all comes down to the luck of the draw. And that's why card drafting is so popular.

Can anyone explain just why this game continues to have such a positive reputation, when luck plays such a huge factor? First, you have roll-and-move. And if that's not enough, you have the potatoes, a lady-or-the-tiger case if there ever was one. And on top of that, you have the randomly placed races; is the game ever not won by the player who lucks upon an efficient trade route first, assuming the dice don't blow them up?

Yes, there is the starvation strategy, there are other strategies... But if you keep rolling 1s and the other player is rolling 6es you can guess who is going to win.

(actually I don't hate the game but I could really never understand the level of popularity and the ratings it gets here.)

It all comes down to the luck of the draw. My mom and dad were not as smart as your mom and dad so I don't have the luck of genetic intelligence that you do so it's not fair.

This seems to be the logic of some games posted here. If people are actually evenly matched, (which is rare in a 4 person game), then yes the random components may give one an edge. But white has a slight edge over black in chess as well. And chess is pure skill, not luck. Many of these posts sound more like someone that is not actually evenly matched and can't figure out why they are losing. No offense intended.

This game definitely has too much luck for my taste. First of all, the person who is better versed in Asian geography fares significantly better than the geographically challenged. Secondly, the events and the possible load pick-ups and deliveries are all random card draws!!

So, the winner will always be the person who gets the luck of the card draw and knows the geography!! Awful!!! yuk

I just don't see what the appeal of this game. Basically, you run around the board for a couple of hours or so, by rolling dice no less, and then when you ultimately fail to close all the gates (again by rolling dice) you have to kill the Great Old One - by rolling dice! Where is the strategy in this?

First off, the order of the starting tiles and the starting player order are completely random. The latter is especially maddening since the starting first player has a clear advantage. But next we get to the real source of luck in this game. You have absolutely no way of knowing when the other players will try to go to the castle. If you go to the castle on your first action and they weren't planning to until later, you can miss out on some great resource gathering opportunities. If you wait to go to the castle and your opponents get there first, you run the risk of not getting the royal favor, even though you submitted the same number of batches. That unpredictability is what ruins the game for me.

This game claims to have some strategy - manage your hand of cards, predict your opponent's moves, force him out of valuable areas, prepare for the scoring cards - but really, it all comes down to whether or not you roll dice well for your critical coup!

Oh there's also Aldrich Ames, AKA Soviet insta-win. A 4-hour gaming experience, down the tubes, because your opponent drew the I Win card!

In fact, all card-driven games are guilty of luck in coups/battles dictating the actual winner of the game. This one is just the poster child.

Strategy? Come on! You not only have total luck involved in what cards you get, but in battles you can't do well at all if you're not rolling high numbers and your opponent is. The tremendous number of dice rolls (battles, treatises, theological debates) just exacerbates the problem. AND you need to have good fortune in your diplomacy; if you're lucky enough to persuade one opponent not to attack at a critical time you're in much better shape. No wonder I usually lose this game.

My gods, but this game is nothing but a dice-fest. If you go to the Queen 15 times then you will always win, and my girlfriend's dice rolling skills always let her get there. I mean, she always rolls four or five dice and splits them up however she feels. Damn her. I only get three and these always get placed on the total. What am I doing wrong?

Oh, and if you roll well then you can just build the Embassy and win every game.

Come on, now! You have to make choices based on your player order. Some of them may be good, but others are awful. And the cost of goods fluctuates like there's no tommorow, so when you go the things you need may be gone. This game completely comes down to the player order.
