Just what the title says. That's what this geeklist is all about.

Why is there such a trend to add so much luck into games nowadays? I wish I understood it. Good for you for reading this far, you'll want to keep reading...trust me. Actually, this list isn't about games that are pure luck at all. You see, I have this theory that there are a number of people out there who occasionally don't bother reading the header text on geeklists, or at best they just glance at the first few sentences of it. People sometimes just read the title and jump right in (I've done it myself before.) Because of this, there are a number of times I see people post things that don't apply at all because they failed to read the full explanation. So, if you are reading this, here's how I will know. Post a game that you actually like, instead of hate. But in the text of your item, give some fake explanation of why you hate the game and think it's pure luck.

Now we don't want this to be too easy for the non-readers to figure out, so make sure you don't post a game with no luck whatsoever like Chess. Something with a little luck will do. What will make it even better is if you sport a "fan" microbadge for the game at the same time you're posting the game you are claiming to hate. And if you are a user who missed this text the first time and jumped in to post a game or comment without realizing the trick of the geeklist...be a good sport, laugh at yourself, and leave it up for everyone else to chuckle at. But don't give away the secret, let users discover it for themselves.

Please post your own.

Man, you want to talk about luck? This game takes 2 hours, minimum to play. And it all comes down to who got one of those "You are a Cylon" cards, because the Cylons win every frakkin' game of this we ever play, no matter how smart the humans are. If I don't get one to start the game, I'm hoping against hope that I somehow manage to draw one during the sleeper-agent phase, or as I like to call it, the "get lucky and win" phase.

The entire game is not totally luck-driven, but if you get to the point of the tiebreaker battle between a single character and the ringwraiths (I won't get started on how horrible an idea THAT is), each player shuffles his deck and draws, then dukes it out. You literally can get draws that you cannot win with. No, it's not down to how you play the cards all the time (though it can happen). Just awful. The rules might as well have used a jump rope contest or a thumb war as the tiebreaker. Totally ruins an otherwise good game as you just played for 2-2.5 hours to have a coin flip determine the winner.

See my collection comments on this game for a bit more... info.

Scrabble is unplayable due to the luck factor.

Draw 7 random tiles.

IIIIEEO

Great, thanks Scrabble gods. Ok, I'll miss a go and swap my tiles.

QWZBCFX

Oh, I see. This is fun.

The only decent way to play this is to have all the tiles face up, and let each player bid points for the letters they want on their rack. The bid is deducted from the final score.

I don't understand how this game is getting such high ratings when, except for the first MAYBE 30 minutes the game is so luck based. It's really a race to get 5 or 6 civil actions. Once everyone gets there it comes down to which player's turn it is when the best cards come out because they can obviously grab it for 3 actions and still take a normal turn.

So... Napolean, Scientific Method, Justice System come out on your turns? You win! Organized Religion, Printing Press, Winston Churchill? You lose!

And don't get me started on the military card draws. If you're lucky you'll get events to play while your strong, and defense cards when you're weak. If you don't... well at least there's always the option to bow out of this "strategic" game before you get pounded by "intelligent play".

I've played this game several times, and I never win. I can only attribute that to luck. Apparently, I'm not lucky enough to have poor playing friends.
In an effort to counteract the luck factor, I just purchased the expansion. If I'm lucky, the expansion will reduce the luck factor.

You know I get how the nitty-gritty of World War II was the average GI (or Fritz, or Tommy, or Luigi, etc.) and his buddies trying to survive while dealing with Fritz, or Luigi, etc. But how am I supposed to "strategize" my way past a bunker protected by machine gun nests with overlapping fields of fire when the squad with the satchel charge is pinned down? How can you win with anything but luck when you have no tanks????

Doesn’t matter how experienced you are or how optimally you move around and treat the different diseases, when it comes time to play the Infector, with the turn of a single card the whole world dies.

My gaming group still plays the Beginner level because we have yet to win. Several times we’ve cured three diseases and one of us has five cards for the last color, and just before it’s his turn, the last infection card turned over causes a chain-reaction and the earth is wiped out. Don’t try to tell me that’s not pure luck.

Drawing random tiles out of the bag where 30 of them are Ra tiles can make or break a game. I'm sure that if a so-called Ra veteran played against 4 child age monkeys, the vet would win precisely 1/5th of the time, because it's PURE LUCK!

The Surprise roll in OCS can really ruin the game. Basically, you've got everything line up for a fantastic 4-1 attack, and then SURPRISE! now it's a 1-2 attack. Everything falls apart, and you've essentially just lost the game, all because of a single roll of the dice. I've not seen a single game where the deciding factor wasn't an unexpected and untimely Surprise, resulting in a disastrous key attack. Either that or an attack that should never, ever, ever succeed, but because of Surprise, it does.

And if you thought that you'd be able to buy back that eliminated unit, think again: 'cause in order to do that, you'll have to roll boxcars in order to get that Eq replacement.

I play this a lot because Rob makes me, but this luckfest is devoid of any real strategy. Rob always seems to manage to cobble some unstoppable combination and wipes me out, such as Bridge+Coliseum or Ludus Magna+Latrine. It's full of so many broken card combinations, that I hardly believe they ever play-tested this game.

Especially in a six player game, there's a greater chance of receiving a hand without any high cards, making bidding for you a waste of time.

You could mitigate this by playing this game with 4 players, but then its so much easier for the two players with the best hands to find each other and become an unbeatable partnership.

Of course, the five player game might be a compromise, bit it in fact compounds these two glaring problems.

And another one that's even more fitting this list than my previous entry.
A highly regarded game, but why??? You get only 5 of your tiles at the same time. You never get the tiles you need so your opponents can easily take away your stones if you are unlucky.

The end condition of the game also feels random, and it really depends on who drew which tiles. And... what is it about the rule that the game can end after 4 ties as well? Strange idea... Once again, it all depends on which tiles you have. You can end the game before it really starts...and then the one winning is who has collected one or two stones at all. I have seen a very short game that ended just like this (a 3-way tie in Edo, and the player who collected one item just forced a fourth tie somewhere).

And then, to top it all, you have the convoluted scoring. If I collect 7 Buddhas, 3 rice fields and 2 helmets (12 damned stones!) then why should you win with 4 rice fields and 3 helmets (only 7 stones!)... It's all a completely random luckfest and I have no idea why it got so high ratings.

This game is basically won or lost on who is sitting to the left of the individuals who grab the bonus tiles. The ones that come out later in the game are sooooo much better than the initial ones that just getting one or two is enough to cause them to win due to the escalating advantage the player gets that snowballs them into an eventual victory. The last time I played it devolved into such a luckfest it was like I lost 90 minutes of my life and I am never, ever going to get it back. Man I loathe this game.

You're dealt a bunch of cards. If you're lucky, you get winning combinations. If you're unlucky you get crap cards. Then, to further let luck take this game by the scruff, you have to pass a card to each of your opponents and you get a random card back. Even with your partner's help, it always comes down to luck.
Having said that, I'm happy to play this game anytime shake
