Just what the title says. That's what this geeklist is all about.

Why is there such a trend to add so much luck into games nowadays? I wish I understood it. Good for you for reading this far, you'll want to keep reading...trust me. Actually, this list isn't about games that are pure luck at all. You see, I have this theory that there are a number of people out there who occasionally don't bother reading the header text on geeklists, or at best they just glance at the first few sentences of it. People sometimes just read the title and jump right in (I've done it myself before.) Because of this, there are a number of times I see people post things that don't apply at all because they failed to read the full explanation. So, if you are reading this, here's how I will know. Post a game that you actually like, instead of hate. But in the text of your item, give some fake explanation of why you hate the game and think it's pure luck.

Now we don't want this to be too easy for the non-readers to figure out, so make sure you don't post a game with no luck whatsoever like Chess. Something with a little luck will do. What will make it even better is if you sport a "fan" microbadge for the game at the same time you're posting the game you are claiming to hate. And if you are a user who missed this text the first time and jumped in to post a game or comment without realizing the trick of the geeklist...be a good sport, laugh at yourself, and leave it up for everyone else to chuckle at. But don't give away the secret, let users discover it for themselves.

Please post your own.

This game is interesting despite being one of the most unbalanced games around. Charlemagne must crush the Forces of Chaos in all directions in order to win. He is likely to crush enemy after enemy racing to complete his conquests before the game ends. But even if he has been rolling along, ever victorious, he can still lose on the basis of ore or two random event rolls. The random events of the final turn may prove crippling and impossible to remedy in the time remaining. Plagues and rebellions can turn a decisive victory into a draw, or worse. What is especially disheartening is the fact that he has already faced down similar events several times by game's end, but it may prove too difficult to restore order in a single turn.

Luck fest x4, the only way to win:

1)Luck out and hope that you get good white cards.
2)Luck out and hope that you get "good" black cards
3)Luck out and play without a traitor (or that the traitor stinks)
4)Luck out and roll 1s when fighting catapaults.

And it's just my luck that we always complete the grail quest, and then all the despair cards decide to come say hello.

How can a halfway-decent player win at this game when there is random cube draws and dice rolls in the Goods Growth phase. Anytime dice are introduced into a game the luck factor grows exponentially. Combine that with random cube draws and you've got the perfect recipe for an entry level train game.

Don't get me wrong I actually love this game. Strategy sure it has some but it all comes down whoever has the random magic carrot. Sure if you don't have a bunny your eliminated at the end but more often then not everyone else still has a bunny and you lose even though you've dominated up to that point.

I once lost when I had all the carrots but one. I was pretty unhappy especially when the person I lost to gloated for what seemed like forever. However I enjoy playing fun games with family and friends. I only play competitively on the rare occasion that someone has the nack of playing over agressive or acting stupid. I then do everything in my power to eliminate that person asap.

I actually like the screwage that this game offers. It is a card game is purely luck based. However I like the fact that if someone gets greedy you can swap hands so they don't win. My sister in law lost every game forever because I was tired of her gloating when she did win so I lost on purpose to teach her a lesson constantly changing things at the last second so she lost.

I'm not saying that this game is pure luck (very few of the games on this list actually are), but I was originally interested in this game because some of its fans described it as being similar to Heroscape in many ways while comparing favorably to that game in terms of strategic depth. In that sense, I was very disappointed. This game is a lot more complex than Heroscape, but it is every bit as luck-based in the end, which only makes it worse.

I'm seriously one of the only gamers I know (personally) who doesn't like this game much. The die rolls make or kill you. You think your strategy is excellent and then three bad die rolls and you're screwed. It's frustrating.

I guess you can consider the probabilities, but I have two many roll streaks of 1's and 2's.

I know this list is growing old, but I just had to add this one because it is the Luckasauros Rex of games.

You'd think a wargame would have strategy and tactics, but not this one. First the scenarios are totally unbalanced; second you use dice and cards. I mean come on, DICE AND CARDS! One or the other would be bad enough.

Worst of all, I've played all the scenarios in the base game--both sides--and two expansions, and I can safely say they are pure luck and nothing but.

What's your strategy?

I don't know, let's see what my random starting world and random starting hand will allow me to do.

How does that strategy work?

By drawing cards which support your strategy, rather any of the cards which are desigend to support any of the other 12-15 legitimate strategies*, all of which much be promoted to the exclusion of all others to have half a chance of victory.

* (Rare earth trading, novelty trading, mass production, VP speed-drain , military/standard, military/rebel, uplift, alien, Imperium, six-cost developments, development-spam, speed-run to 12 properties, others that you can only really get by getting the right 6-cost development on turn 1)

What do you do in a turn?

I don't know, as I only control the possibility of one type of action occuring, with the other phases being selected by other players based on what's in their hands (which I cannot see).

What do cards let you do?

I don't know, as the designer's choice to use symbols instead of plain English, combined with giving us reference cards that only list examples of the types of symbols involved, causing the highest argument-to-turn ratio I've seen since the time I played Arkham Horror with someone who thought Stratego was a complicated game.

Who wins?

I don't know, because with so many god cards that combo off other cards which can be hoarded until someone is at 11 properties, RFTG is yet another game which consists of two hours of busy work before the only turn which matters, the last turn.

Just because you're changing one letter doesn't mean it has strategy.

What I mean is: When I play it with a 5 year old, a 15 year old or 55 year old person, I ALWAYS LOSE! It IS about luck (and memory), NOT strategy.

And I hardly need to mention this luck-fest. "It's all about the deck-construction," I'm sure the Magic fanboys'll tell me - well try telling me next time I'm sat impotently with a hand full of 8-mana dragons while the snotty 12-year old across the table is ramming my ass full of 1/1 goblins. What a horrible game. There's the luck of the initial draw, the luck of the cards coming out, the luck of the order of province visits, and finally the luck of who you're playing with and do they want to fight you and make you lose.
It's a huge luckfest.
