As is the tradition, I will start things off with my recap:
What an good weekend for me! Saturday was our Game Day that we were hosting at our house. Just over 30 people ended up showing up, including some of the awesome guys from Sages in Toledo! Big thanks to them for making the trip down! Overall it was a huge success, and it appeared that everyone was haivng a great time. There was pretty much a solid werewolf games going on all day long in our living room, while a smaller group of us broke off to play some other things. Later at night, the werewolf group took a short break for a few games of Pit, and then a extremely raucaus game of Spoons. Here is what I got in:
I started off playing and modding 3 games of Werewolf in the morning to get the ice broken among the people that showed up early. Then I broke off with a few of the guys who were new to gaming, and asked them what on the shelf interested them. They picked Bang!, so we broke that out, and just as I got done teaching, a couple of the guys from Sages showed up, so they hopped in for a couple games of it. Next we got out Dice Town, which the new guys loved. We followed that with what ended up being a pretty awesome game of Cash N' Guns. Then one of the new guys was really interested in Last Night on Earth, so we busted it out. The Humans ended up winning, after some major zombie mistakes on my end. After that we got in two games of Cosmic Encounter (one with 6 and one with 5, as one of the guys fell asleep in the chair), which I think may have been one of the favorites of the day. By then it was getting pretty late, and most of the people head started to head out, so the remaining few wanted something lighter, so we threw down adventures, which has an awesome OH Crap moment right at the end with Eric grabbing the end treasure right as the boulder was bearing down on him.
Sunday my wife napped and clean, and I wasn't able to round anyone up, so the only game I got in was a round of stratego with my boy.

Overall it was an awesome weekend! This weekend I am traveling down to Alabama for work, and then when I got back, it will be event day at Sages!!!

Friday: Our usual Friday night with the group. There were five of us. We kicked the night off with Confucius. I didn't do too badly but I'm not sure why, definitely have to try this one again. Tribune: Primus Inter Pares hit the table next. Before we started, one player said he didn't want to learn a new game that he cared much about doing well at, and yet, he won! We ended the night we three hands of Escalation!.

Saturday: Not much going on. RnR glued together the Planet Steam energy coupler for me. He must've done a good job because it held together later when one of the cats batted it off the table. Unfortunately, it looks like he chewed on the pointy quartz upgrade a little first. We also played two games of Race for the Galaxy + all expansions, using goal tiles and one game of Lost Cities. After making some Rustic Lentil Pate to bring to a game day the next day, we sat down and ate some while playing our last game of the day, Mr. Jack. And I won! Finally!!

Sunday: Up and out bright and early for a game day with friends. First up was 2 tries of 10 Days in Asia. Well, first was actually the warm welcoming home of Galaxy Trucker which we'd borrowed. Next up was Race for the Galaxy + all expansions, using goal tiles. Last Night on Earth: The Zombie Game came next. Playing zombies didn't put D off his non-brain food at all. We tried IceTowers and Martian Chess. Next was Dungeon Lords. A did a good job teaching, the training scenario helped. I followed that with my worst score ever in Le Havre. R must've done well with the teach because A had 13 points on him at the end. We closed the day with a couple of lighter games: For Sale and Jumbo & Co.

A learning round of Pandemic that went south fast. While teaching the roles (and rules) my brother in law agreed that we'll find a cure for orange/red disease... by the time we found the cure there was only 1 cube on orange/red and chaining epidemics in black and yellow.

Last Night on Earth. Haven't played this in a while. Though the general rules are straight forward found ourselves looking up certain scenarios. Great game and a lot of fun... my brother in law won as zombie during his first play of the game.

Friday night we had a very short game night in which we played 3 games. I had been itching to get Timbuktu back onto the table and succeeded. I also won it. whistle We also got in a game of Mutiny and Pick Picknic. Better to have a short game night than no game night at all!

Sunday I played Mamma Mia and Pick Picknic wiht my second oldest daughter and stopped at my mom's where we played 2 games of Mexican Train.

Whether I play much or little, I'm glad I have games! meeple

On Friday and Saturday afternoon we played Citadels. I just bought this game recently so we are still at the very early stage of learning the cards and the game. A fun game!

On Sunday afternoon we taught my husband to play Roma, and had a couple of rounds. Such a clever game, we love it.

On Sunday night the four of us played Kingsburg and had fun playing the game. Now we should buy the expansion that makes a good game even better.

Played with four other guys, our sixth canceled out (just discovered he's having a baby).

None of us had played the game for years (a decade for 3 of us), and one had never played at all.

We played the Secret Mission variant that came with my edition. My mission was take out yellow, but I was yellow so I had to occupy 24 territories.

The game lasted for about 3 hours, and it came down to two guys winning, black and green - if Black failed in his last great campaign (he controlled Europe for most of the game, and in his last battle took me out of Africa and went in through Asia and took out Australia), then Gren would have easily taken him out (who's mission was to destroy Black).

It was a lot of fun, and though I can't play games like that or with a group like that often, I prized the time.

[edit: can't count right - number of players was 5]

On Friday, a friend showed up and we intended to play Duel in the Dark. Our group quickly and unexpectedly grew to four and we needed a more suiting game. I read through the rules of Neuroshima Hex!. I had never investigated this game and thought it was a some sort of dice fest like Nexus Ops. In reality it was NOTHING like that. Largely felt like a tile-laying, abstract game.

There was no gaming to be had on Saturday, but on Sunday I was able to try Macao. Great planning/action point game. I think the game suffered from playing it 2 players, but I still enjoyed it. I look forward to trying it with more.

Games, games and more games!
mbmbmbmbmb
Friday night games, and as usual we started with Race for the Galaxy while waiting for the fifth to arrive. We then moved on to Agricola, a current favourite - I seemed to have a very good game, and the only surprise was that my winning score wasn't higher - mainly because I was having feeding problems I think. Next came Power Grid, which ended up very close - I bought up the remaining coal to stop one player on 15 houses powering, only to be betaen by the other by just 5 cash! But then, this was a competition for second, as my husband was powering 16. We finished with Huuuuuuugo - otherwise known as Midnight Party.

No gaming over the rest of the weekend - unless an ice hockey match counts!

Played my first game of 40K.

I played 750pts of Orks teamed with my mates 750pts of Space Marines. We took on 1500pts of Chaos Space Marines.

I did pretty well but lost the objective on the last turn. Great fun though and a game I intend to carry on playing.

Made the trip to Leeds this weekend with my cousin Greig. I always take a load of games with me, as I've managed to get all my friends down there addicted to gaming. In the end it ended up being a drinks-fest and we didn't get much gaming done at all, however on Sunday we managed to squeeze in a five-player game of Cuba before I made the drive back home. My friend Euan won by a decent margin, using a very flexible strategy of just grabbing easy victory points at every opportunity, while everyone else tried to set up mildly complicated operations involving cigars and rum. I ended up third.

I don't think I've ever won a game of Cuba... must try harder.

Friday night I played El Capitan with Matt and his wife. Didn't do so well in it, but I liked the game. The art design is a strange mix of really captivating and irritatingly busy.

Saturday I went over to Dan's and we played a bunch of two player games. we started with Scripts and Scribes, which I like to think of as "For Sale for Two". Then two games of Battle for Hill 218, and finally Mr. Jack. He liked them all (which is good because he had his own copy of Mr. Jack already coming in a game order!) We finished out with another game of BfH218.

When I got back from Dan's house, half of a huge game order had arrived, including some things for him. He came over that evening to pick them up and stayed for two games of one of his purchases, 2 de Mayo. I also showed him my recent trade acquisition, Babylone.

In that big order I got (but haven't played yet): Power Grid Brazil/Iberia, Scrappers, and Ad Astra.

All of this makes up for the fact that I couldn't make it to our usual Sunday game day.

After over a year of waiting, Dune finally hit our group table on Friday evening. This was an ebay purchase of a rather excessive amount, but my collector's gene made me do it. We all wondered how it would play. One of the group had played before, and wanted to employ the WBC revisions to the letter. But group feeling (prompted by BGG forums) was that we'd go for the basic ruleset and options from there, with the WBC as backup for disputes. No point posting a full session report here, but in short, the game fulfilled expectations - a wonderful, unpredictable but gameplay and faction motivated experience of ebb and flow that seemed about to end several times, only to turn dramatically by traitor more than once. The game, in fact, ended on exactly that - a traitor turnaround, where a single Fremen unit under a weak leader (the last not in the tanks) assaulted a massed force of Harkonnen led by the traitrous Pitr De Vires, giving a third stronghold to the Bene-Jezerit/Fremen alliance. Everyone is keen to see it out again, and that's where it belongs - on a table, not on the shelf...

Well, this weekend was pretty good for gaming in my mind.

Saturday started off with me running a demo of Campaign Manager 2008. Played in two games (1 win, 1 loss) and oversaw seven. Lots of positive feedback, but the standard complaint of the tally board being a bit finicky came out quite often. Was a really good four hour demo.

After that, we jumped into a game of Bootleggers. Oh boy, is this a cutthroat game or what? I think I ended up in third or fourth place at the end, but I had fun for my first game of it. Nothing like taking out your neighbor in one round and bribing him to not return the favor the next.

Sunday I got permission from my wife to go play one more game, a two and a half hour game of Steam Barons. I haven't played a train game in a while, but this one was definite fun. I came in second, which is not bad for not really knowing what I was doing until around halfway through the game.

All in all, a nice weekend of gaming. ^_^

Was a pretty busy weekend at our home so very little gaming took place.

However, Friday we had a few friends over and one of them insisted we play "Battletech", after a lot of rules wrangling (he never really read the rules but had someone teach him their "version" of it) we got underway with a 3v3 game. Including my wife...much to my surprise.

Each player controlled 1 'mech, which is a good teaching method (as I've not played in awhile, and 2 players had never played). I retired early from the game due to medication kinda impairing my enjoyment of the game (sprained my wrist a few months ago), so I really don't know how it ended!

Though, the capper, is the next day my wife mentioned she ENJOYED playing Battletech. I stood in mute silence, told her I loved her and if she wanted to learn the right way to play it just to let me know when we had a free evening...

My other "gaming related" activity led me to finally picking up StarCraft: The Board Game – Brood War Expansion and organizing all the factions into plano boxes for quick dispersal and setup.

After owning this for months, I was finally able to get this to the table. It was a big hit with us all. Although, I lost horribly. Whoever believes you can ignore the rats is WRONG! (IMHO)

We also got in games of:

Wits and Wagers
- My first time playing. It was okay.
Bang! - An old favorite
Shadow Hunters - Another Favorite in our group. Played with the expansion characters. Doesn't mix things up too much, and I kinda missed the original ones.

Friday I added two games to my collection, but played none. I had bought Carson City and got Bohnanza as a gift from my girlfriend!

Saturday I spent a lazy afternoon with my girlfriend playing several games. We played Ticket to Ride: Europe, Agricola and three games of Guillotine. The first was another game of the regular 1912 expansion, without all the big cities tickets. This is our favorite with the best ticket layout. I managed to win, but barely. Agricola was our second game with the I deck and I made all the wrong choices. Naturally, I lost this game, ending with a final score of a low 29 points. I also lost our best of three series of Guillotine 2 to 1.
In the evening we had a friend coming over and we played lots of short and fun games. We played Dancing Eggs several times and it was a lot of fun. Our friend then suggested to play Clue afterwards. This is one of the first games we bought, but I think it was the second time we played our copy. I got reassured in my opinion we don't need to play this more often. Afterwards, we played a game of Bohnanza, two games of Pickomino and two more games of Guillotine. It was a night filled with fillers, and we had a lot of fun.

Sunday I had another friend coming over and again we played a lot of games. We started with Stone Age and although it was a very close game, we couldn't stop my girlfriend and her hut-heavy strategy. Afterwards, we taught our friend Bohnanza and played two games of it. Then, our friend suggested to play Tikal and he made my day. I don't get to play this game often and we had a tense game, resulting in a tie! We finished the day with two games of Lost Cities. I won the first game by 53 points and I lost the second by 53 points. Does this count as another tie?

Friday

Played a couple games of Pandemic with the On the Brink expansion. The new roles that they put in the expansion really add a nice variety to the game. The last game we played we used the bio terrorist, which really amped up the difficulty.

Saturday

Saturday night I had a couple people over and hosted a game night that lasted until about 2:00 am. Started out with a game of Mwahahaha. That was followed by my first ever 5-player game of BSG, I'd only previously played with 3 people. It was a lot of fun, but since we figured out who our Cylon was before we even made our first jump (it was his first time playing, and we called his bluff early) and he ended up getting the second Cylon card during the sleeper phase and was unable to get it out to another human, it seemed a little too easy for the humans. I am looking forward to playing BSG with this group again!!

We closed the night with three games of Shadow Hunters with the expansion. I cannot stress how much fun that game is!! If you are a fan of Bang! but want a little more depth, give this game a try! It's really fast-paced, it's extremely easy to learn, and the games themselves are very quick. This was the gem of the night for me!

Sunday

On Sunday, I played 2 games of Fury of Dracula. It was great to get this game out on the table again, since I hadn't played it since October. This was a lot of fun even though I lost when I played as Dracula during the first game. The second game my fiancèe played as Dracula for the first time. She did great, but the hunters got a couple of game-changing event cards the essentially revealed everywhere she had been. And when the hunters know where Dracula is, the game is pretty much over.

Work and school are kicking my butt, and my game partner isn't doing much better. We were both pretty tired and didn't play too well, but it was a good time to have fun and relax.

Summoner Wars was our first game. My elves met his dwarfs. He got a poor shuffle, and wasn't able to take out any walls. The highlight of the game was Princess Ellen going in for the kill and getting the final hit.

The elves met the goblins next. I am building a theory that if the opponent of the elves can hold off the first big attack of the gobs, then the match is over. It proved true with this one. I played cat and mouse with his units-- using range to take out gobs and bringing nothing out onto the field for him to attack.

It was still pretty close, but Princess won again with one life left to her.

From there.. we move to Pandemic. We played three games, and won the first two (on Easy and Medium) with ease, and we came close to beating hard. One turn away and we would have cured the last two diseases with one stroke. An epidemic broke out and we ran out of black cubes. Oh well. It was close.

A change is better than a rest

Two games on the table (well, one on the floor) this weekend. With both games I decided to try something a little different:

To play Ragnar Brothers' Kings + Castles, I decided to give the enemies, and subsequent possessors of the 3 point region, London, and the many 2 point regions a defending force of 3 and 2 men, respectively. To attack that region, you'd need at least that many men and when you won, you'd keep that many men in the region. Castles, of course, are extra.

We only got the chance to get one game in, and well we're not sure that this was the reason, the enemies held on to Scotland and Ireland the entire game, Wales for most of the game except the last quarter, while England was purged of enemies, and France flip-flopped back and forth the whole time. The player who removed the enemy forces from London held onto it for the entire game. A good time was had by all, and I cannot really report a successful playtest, since we weren't sure what sort of a difference it made.

Then, off to Catan Histories: Struggle for Rome. Decided to do two things for this game. One, we included all the cities. Usually in a three-player game, you leave off two cities in each region. So there was more plunder (and more death, since all the plunder tokens were on the map) and tribes could have access to more numbers on the board when conquering and expanding cities. Second, I opted for a no-plundering-on-the-first-turn rule, so that the person who goes last on the first turn doesn't have the furthest to go in order to plunder a city. That idea didn't have the effect I thought it would.

As I write this, I've just decided something. Usually players are given 5 gold and a pasture card to start. I think I'll try giving the players a choice between a pasture card and a grain card. Grain can be spent (instead of 3 gold) for land travel. Maybe that would entice everyone to flow out over Gaul on the first turn...

Anyway. I was leading through the first half of Kings + Castles, but fell to second place during the 3rd quarter, and last at the end of the game.

In both games of Struggle for Rome I finished second or so.

Good games.

On the solo front, I had set-up ready to play, then packed away for space, and set-up again Sunday Greek Tragedy to play solo today, since I'm off work.... again!

Saturday afternoon Meg and I got a game of Empire Builder in with our new laminated map, which is working out really well. Saturday night was Game Group, so we got two great games of Pandemic with two new players and everyone had a really fun time.

Sunday we played two games of Arkham Horror -- one three player game (two character each) with the Dunwich expansion and one two-player game (also two characters each) playing the first AH League scenario. What a weekend!
