I Have been told that Trick Taking is just not fashionable these days.

Its a dead genre.

But I find that there is hardly a game night that goes without some trick playing game being played. Of course some may say that Tichu isn't a trick taker - and they might be right but lately I have been seeing a return to hearts and chinese hearts in our group - which might be a bit surprising given the usually heavy fare they like.

For those of you may have followed my self publishing story you may not be surprised to learn that I like trick taking games - not that I am that good at them but they appeal to my like ot simple rules, but deep and changing strategies.

So in ode to a favorite mechanic I present 12 trick taking games released this decade - of course 3 of these are games that I am (or will be publishing)

And you might have read all the way to this point and now be wondering where the contest is - I will be giving one of each game that Indie Boards and Cards publishes. One winner will be selected for each game at random from the cross section of people that have both thumbed this geeklist and thumbed one of the games published by Indie Boards and Cards.

The contest winners will be selected at midnight on Friday the 19th of March.

And the winners are:

A trick taker for 2! My self published release - currently OOP, but look for its return later in the year with much improved art and wider distribution.

I probably should point out that there are copies of this still available from thoughthammer and ookoodook.com. I have heard of at least one crazy trade for a copy as well (and I have enough extra pieces to put together a few "used" copies if anyone wants to offer me so good games!)

Not really a trick taker - its Knizia meets MtG. Unfortunately its not one that I enjoy largely due to my inability to dedicate the time it requires to ramp up.

This one is basically a trick-taking game with a heavy wargame chrome. You simulate a battle in the pacific conflict by leading a trick. The player that leads it decide if it will be a naval or aerial battle, and if it will be done at night or day. Then each player decide if they want to side with Americans or the Japanese, and play a card (plane, submarine or boat) which can fight in this battle. If you're on the winning side, you share the spoils of war, but the least number of players on your side, the biggest the victory points can be. The fact that every single card has a historical picture of the ship or plane is good, and some historical tidbits!

Definitely worth looking to see what developers can do with trick taking games!

Anyone familiar with this one? The re-themed "Four Dragons" version looks particularly nice.

I've read the rule-book once or twice, but not made it past that yet.

From a review: "Four Dragons is a twisted little point trick game, where players try to win tricks with rain and earth cards - thus making the rain fall on dry earth. Each pair of rain and earth is a point and the partnership with more points after three hands wins the game. So far it's quite simple and straightforward.
The trickery starts with the cards. The distribution is odd. There are four colours, which are not identical. Well, three are, but then there's black. In each trick, players can play only one card of each colour, except black, which is always allowed. That's a good way to restrict what your opponents can do. The cards run from zero to ten, with highest cards beating smaller cards. Several cards have special abilities like ask (you get to ask a question from one of the players about their hand), swap (swap cards with your partner) or kill 10 (the card nullifies one 10 played by an opponent).
"

It seems to be regarded by many as a great partnership trick taking game for four players. Anyone reading this have any experience playing it, or thoughts to share about how it compares with other trick-taking games?

Essen 2009 release by long time trick taking fan Peer Sylvester and publisher Gunter Cornett. Indie Boards and Cards is doing the US release and its available now.

Fun for 3-5 players - with an area majority aspect this one really throws trick taking conventions sideways, fits nicely for those that are good at both trick taking and economic games.

I am thinking of picking this one up as well. I like the idea that the low card of the first four rounds gets a part in setting the trick limit for the last 4 rounds.

I haven't played it yet but this one looks to have plenty of strategy regardless of hand type. There is a good review on the geek here that mentions some rules need changing.

Most notable is play to a point total and not a fixed number of rounds.

Anyone else have experience with this one before I take the plunge?
