From the website:

"We are environmentally friendly, and strive to recycle and re-use whenever possible. We accept and reuse donated packing peanuts. Being a family-owned, home-based business, we have greatly reduced our day-to-day need for automobiles. We support gay rights and equal rights for all people, and we regard cannabis-consuming adults as potential customers, not criminals."

I'm not a hippy. THESE guys are hippies, but I won't hold it against them.

Cheapass Games

From the website:
"If you ignore the clever shapes they come in, the cheap little plastic pawns are an interchangeable part of most of the board games in your house. So are the dice, the money, the counters, the pencils, and just about every other random spare part. These generic bits and pieces can account for as much as 75% of a game's production cost, and that cost gets handed to you."

The game is about environmental problems: if players don't cohoperate enough, they all loose.
We did it for Armando Curcio Editore that was poublishing an environmental encyclopaedia with Lega Ambiente, one of the main environmental associations. All the game was printed on recycled paper, and there was no plastic at all.
Not so much, maybe. But it was back in 1989...

Yes, Games Workshop. From what I understand all their factories are in the states. That means that they are supporting a local economy, paying their workers a fair wage, and cutting down on pollution created in shipping their products across the ocean. People complain that their miniatures are expensive, well this is why. If you want people to be paid a fair wage, than your goods are going to cost more.

Of course, the ethics of collectible games are questionable, notably because of the environmental impact.

Ok. I know Cheapass is already on the list, but I wanted to draw attention to this:

This game is limited to 5,000 copies, because it uses counters recycled from the Atlas game, Spammers. Atlas overprinted its Spammers counters and gave us the surplus, so we’re only able to bring you this game for as long as those counters last!

Any doubts I had about Cheapass have been put to rest. James Ernest rocks!

This seems like more of a toy than a "game", but nonetheless it is effectively handmade by the woman that created it. Games that are handmade don't exploit our screwed up economic system, and if you lived in Toronto, you could pick one up from her directly, saving the pollution created by shipping. If anyone knows of other homemade/handmade games, please post them.

Of course, another option is to just make up your own game! No slave labour, next to no pollution, and it's fun. You could even cut up one-sided scrap paper, because nobody should really take 1KBWC seriously!

From the BGG page:
"This game is endorsed by Survival for Tribal Peoples. Any proceeds from the game are used to aid tribal peoples throughout the world."

A friend recently told me about a game he got where for every copy of the game, the company gave to an alternative energy NGO as a carbon offset. I believe this is the game.
