This is a GeekList for cool Android games that aren't necessarily actual boardgames.

Official versions of boardgames or games that are extremely similar to actual boardgames should be added here: Android versions of actual boardgames instead.

Updated to include RPGGeek and VideoGameGeek as well so it is now possible to add RPG and VGG items.

=================================

To find the apps listed below a smart place to start is Google Play: https://play.google.com/

You'll sometimes see QR codes likes this one:

You can use a barcode scanner to read this image and it will translate into a link and take you directly to the app in question. Try it out on the QR code listed here, should take you to the BGG main page.

Most handsets include a barcode reader from start, otherwise get one here.

RULES FOR THIS LIST

1) No duplicate entries. Make a comment in the existing item instead that there's another game available that plays similar to the listed item.

2) Official versions of boardgames or games that are extremely similar to actual boardgames should be added here: Android versions of actual boardgames

I don't have the expansion yet, and honestly haven't even seen exactly what it adds. If someone wants to give me the necessary info I can see about getting it released before the expansion gets released here in the states.

In the manual are all leaders and their abilities listed. I don't think you could add the unique abilities to your app - a single field to enter the sum of victory points from leaders would be good.

Civilization Tech Helper
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.civtechtracker

From the market description:
Tired of doing pesky "math" to determine tech costs?
This is a tech cost calculator for the old Avalon Hill board game Advanced Civilization, http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgameexpansion/177/advanced-civ....
It's really simple to use. After buying tech, check the boxes next to the techs you bought. Credits are then applied towards remaining techs, and the costs updated.
Designed to speed up the tech purchasing stage of the game by performing the tedious math of credit computation for you. Use that extra time to scope out the game state, pretend you're doing math out loud while your opponents' are trying to add up their credits in their head, or to get some potato chips and ding dongs from the communal food area.

Rommel in Africa - new hex wargame with 3 scenarios. Free in marketplace uploaded by me yesterday.

You can play the Italian invasion of 1940, which went horribly wrong; the arrival of Rommel in 1941 and his subsequent conquest of cyrenacia (sans Tobruk); operation Crusader where Auchinlek beat Rommel.

Playtest as of now, but works and you can either play 2 player or either side against AI.

Just downloaded the free version to try out. Nice to have an actual wargame on their as opposed to the Risk clones.

Fitting, as I just watched two movies on Rommel over the weekend

It crashed a couple times when I tried to Load a game. Perhaps I hadn't actually saved it before I exited and it didn't know how to handle a Load command with no Saved games ?? I don't know. But thought you might like to know. I have a Droid Incredible

One of my favorite video board games. Not the exact version, but a hex version with different boards, which I've seen done before, and which is arguably better than the original square boards. This is a good version. I have trouble beating the medium intelligence depending on the board layout. It can even play more than 2 player, which I haven't seen before.

There are probably multiple versions of backgammon. The one that I have, from AI factory, is adequate, if not exactly stellar. The AI has 3 levels - the lowest level is about as good as a three year old. Cat. The highest level is OK, if not brilliant (too conservative, I would suggest).

Graphics are not too bad. The UI regularly irritates me especially with continued repeating of the obvious, especially with things like an opponent on the bar not being able to enter popping up a box to say so. Even when you have a full table, so it is bound to be the case whatever is thrown.

And they put the doubling cube in the wrong place.

I also have the AI Factory version, and I'm pretty happy with it. At first it bugged me that the board was upside-down, but there's an "invert" option to correct that. At Hard level, it plays well enough to be fairly interesting. I haven't tried either of the other levels. I'd love to see Jellyfish or Snowie for the Android.

Neat - will have to look for that.

Did you code it yourself? If so, congrats. What is the reason you don't place the grid over a background map image, though? If the problem is that you're running out of memory (which happens occasionally for my games using 1000x1000 px maps), you can force the program to load them as ARGB4444, which pretty much halves the memory requirements for the image.

Yes, the eclipse environment is very nice. Didn't have a background image to hand and couldn't face trying to figure out how to implement it is the only reason. Currently working on a version of http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/28776/unternehmung-25...

Also available as a free version. It's actually called "Conflicts:Operation Barbarossa" suggesting it may be the first in a range of games.

I've just downloaded the free version - about 30 by 30 hexes. I recognise some of the programming styles from my efforts at Android! It's fun.

The Battle for Wesnoth was finally ported to Android. There is a free version with a couple of levels and a $3.99 version with many campaigns and a couple hundred levels.

Battle for Wesnoth is a hex grid turn based strategy game in a fantasy setting. Akin to Advance Wars or Final Fantasy tactics, new units can be purchased during a battle but experience units can also be recalled from prior battles so there is incentive to carefully manage attrition.

Game play is fundamentally the same as the PC/Mac/Linux version, which is open source and free. It also has the same polished graphics of the original, although some of the detail is lost given the size of the screen. Some of the text is also super tiny.

The biggest drawback is probably the fact that the install is fairly large 11MB or 28MB and an additional 200MB of content has to be downloaded in order to play.

Schotten-Totten only has 54 cards; 3-Card Brigade Poker, like Battlelines, has 60.

As to the lawsuit, I have absolutely no special knowledge, but something made me think that it was a breach of contract suit rather than an intellectual property suit. Unfortunately for game designers, it is not possible to copyright games, and very few designers go through the effort and expense to secure patents.

One request - can you tweak it so the app can be moved to an SD card?

Maybe it's just my android OS or the LG's limitation. But no, it wouldn't let me move it off the phone to the SD card.

Nice update on Pirates and Traders by the way!

Discovered a free version of Button Soccor called "Pocket Soccer" (by rastergrid) by way of this review:

http://meandmydroid.blogspot.com/2011/03/pocket-soccer.html

You can get it here:

I haven't been able to play around with it much, but seems pretty fun so far. The learning curve is steeper than I thought it would be and I got trounced by the AI my first game.

Can be played against an AI, or two-player face-to-face.

Seems very polished.

EDIT: Just noticed that the review linked to above is by a fellow BGGer (added the "Can't Stop" entry on this list):

Cool. I would have put in Subbuteo instead of button soccer. Either way, it's not really like them. The players and the ball continue to slide around more like an air hockey set. So, if you want precision flicking, this isn't it. Still a cool little game for free.

Not bad. Not real flicking though. More like arcade pool football. Plus I'd like to see more subbuteo-like rules.

Just looked at the button football rules, and this actually is closer to button football. I guess I just like subbuteo better.

I think mkosma is talking about the app he linked to before, not the one I linked to above. There are a few reviews for "Button Footbal" mentioning air push.

Not a whole lot I can ay about this, as I only recently got the ability to play this and Shadow Era on my phone. But it looks a little like the old Gamecube game C.A.R.D Revolution. I liked that one. I think I'll like this one to.

Incidently I only found it on amazon so far. Here is the link: http://www.amazon.com/Kyy-Games-Oy-Cabals-Card/dp/B006H7WKHQ...

What can I say about this game...
It has cool mechanisms that mix traditional CCG with a sort of boardgamish capture&control. It has a lot in common with Summoner Wars in some perspective.

BUT...
It's stupidly developed.

First bug I detected is random freezes during LogIn, some even blocking the entire cellphone.

But the worst ones are related with the deck editor.
My first experience with the Deck Editor was horrible. I started to build a new deck, spent all the Influence to buy new cards and then I saved it. After that I went and deleted the starter deck to play with just the one I created. Guess what, both the decks were deleted. And even better, the cards I bought...GONE!! Influence spent...GONE!!

Ok, I thought it could be some sort of bug with the deleted decks so yesterday I created a new account. I deleted the starter deck first, created a new one, bought some cards, spent all the Influence. Everything was fine. I even played some games...
Today, I Login in that account and guess again, no deck, no cards, no Influence!!

I've sent an e-mail to Kyy Games reporting the first bug, will send another with this one.

It's a shame because it's a great game and these bugs ruined it!

Oh, and to plug my site, I do a website (currently blog format) with Android game reviews (Roll or Don't is reviewed there) at http://www.MeAndMyDroid.com/. Check it out and if you've got a new Android board game please let me know as I'd be happy to review it.

Thanks for that! Searching for "Roll or Don't" in the Marketplace didn't come up with the game.

Hmm, I just tried it, and you're right. It's that darn "or" in there, messing with search engine's mind, I'll bet. If you put it in quotes, as you've written it, both versions come up. But what a pain!

You know, when I named the game, nineteen years ago, search engines weren't a part of the equation. If I had it to do over, I wouldn't have an "or" or an apostrophe in the name. Sigh...

I'll try to add the QR code for the Two-Player version also.

I'd give you my copy if I could. Uninstalled it this morning, as I found it just too quick and annoying for my taste. When I play a game with a board, I want to move my own pieces on the board. And I prefer that computer games slow down to human-play speed.

Patrick, someone else also suggested he'd like to be able to slow down the AI. Considering the few users I have, two is practically an angry mob. So I reconsidered, and added a Speed Control into "Roll Or Don't". I also added the ability to reset the stats to zero, and fixed the scrolling issues.

So, just thought I'd let you (and everyone else) know...

I had the ios version and loved it on my ipod Touch, but when I got my Android phone, the ads annoyed the crap out of me. There IS actually a paid version (ads free) of Angry Birds for android, it's on the Amazon App Store exclusively.

To avoid ads just turn off data traffic before playing. It's as easy as that.

If your phone is rooted you can also disable internet access to certain apps. Instant ad blocker.
I tried turning off wifi when I played/used certain ad supported games and apps.... while it did work, some of these apps allocated a chunk of the screen real estate that you still had to deal with an "empty hole", even though the flashiiness and graphics were no longer distracting.

Phonefraze - A Catch Phrase clone.

I haven't tried it, but it's out there. There is a free version as well as a paid version that gives access to free add-on packs as they are released.

This is neat except I've seen my friends toss and drop the catch phrase saucer way too often to subject my $600 phone to the same treatment.

I still see it - in fact there is at least 12 different versions (some special ones like Soccer theme, 90s edition, Movies/Tv, Music, etc)

Install Barcode Scanner.

If it's not already installed. My phone came with it. Just activate Barcode Scanner and hold your phone up to the QR code as if you were going to take a picture of it. Then follow the prompts.

Diego, post it! Don't comment it!
It seems interesting, so please create an independent post for this game with link to Google Play.
