Howdy.

Time for this month's installment of the "table" GL. April's list was rather interesting in that folks continued to contribute to it right up to the end of the month, which is a first I think (the list tends to subside after the first week or two). That was pretty cool IMHO. There was the usual assortment of new games and timeless classics, the later making me consider dragging out some of my oldies from their storage boxes.

Unfortunately, my gaming plans were interrupted halfway through April, so my hopes for my initial playing of "Washington's War" and "Barbarossa to Berlin" did not pan out. A gaming tragedy. Hopefully that can be corrected this month. My "Afrika" game with Bill (billyboy) is on hiatus also as contemplation ensues. We may call it a draw as it does not appear that either side can win (after Turn 23).

Regardless, please let us know what you are playing these days. Are you liking it? How did the game go?

Once again, this is a list by us, for us. A community list.

I am still figuring out how to play this game. I am trying hard to love this game but the many errors and ambiguities make it very hard. Very annoying are the dummy counters. The first version of them were very easy identifiable and the errata counters are still identifiable!

I have Carrier and I love it. And I admit that with this old game I have much less questions than with Coral Sea Solitaire. The problem is my forgetfulness. When I play such a game every 3 years or so I have to relearn the rules.

Didn't manage to play a single wargame in April so I was thirsty for one and broke this negative trend with a game of T&G (Austerlitz scenario) on May 1.

We had some entertaining hours and I had so much fun that I even wrote my first session report on this
Austerlitz session report
It's not very long but I hope the fun we had is recognizable

Hope I will have this mont a little bit more time for some solos at least. I have seen some "old friends" in this list that really should see the table again.

I've been playtesting the solo rules for this new Volko Ruhnke title on VASSAL. My first impressions are that I really like the interplay of the game's mechanics. Things like the level of US troop commitments affect how many cards it draws, the success of Jihadist plots can increase available funding, making it easier to recruit more cells, etc. I can tell that the designer has put a lot of thought into the game's engine.

As for the solo rules, they are a real kick in the teeth. On my first play the US side lost in 3 turns! I'm sure that's due to my inept play but it is nice to see a solo AI that puts up a fight. However learning the solo rules adds a bit to the rules overhead. In other words, learning the F2F game is easier and the solo rules add value for the exprienced player. I'm very much looking forward to this game's release.

Last week I wrapped up a game of Rout on the Riviera, FT 97 from Le Franc Tireur. My Italians had to capture a fortified ridge from Joe Leoce's French, in a heavy rain. Joe had decent troops and a good position, while I had a *lot* of bodies (22 squads), some assault engineers, and the welcome cover of the aforementioned rain. I managed to claw my way up the slopes, but Joe had one last crack as I was right in front of his heavy machine guns. He rolled, he missed, he failed to maintain rate of fire, and that was it. Not a bad scenario for such a static situation.

Nice pic!

I have always found the ASL post-scenario board situation amusing. More often than not there is plenty of routed units, broken/destroyed equipment and bypassed impediments scattered hither and yon. The detritus of war I suppose.

I needed to avoid burning out on Great Campaigns of the American Civil War, so I opted for this old boy. I used a set up from The General (v.23#2) which leaves the South of France undefended and places almost all of the mobile forces in Normandy and Brittany.

Great see-saw contest which effectively ended once I gave up on scrupulous factor-counting. Two ill-conceived attacks on some urban areas blew out half of the Allied forces.

This game can sometimes seem like a math puzzle, but there are great joys to be had with that rather bloody CRT. I had a very good time--this will come back to the table again, to be sure.

I have noticed that with some games also. Not my cup of tea (especially if the combat factors are large and/or the stacking limit is generous), but I will enjoy them from time to time nevertheless.

Decided to take this sucker out of the box again and try to make some giant scenarios with the boards from Normandy + Base game. I need to get the map pack I think because the graphics in the expansions are so far superior to those in the base game.

Thinking about the East Front expansion that's coming got me excited.

I have a couple of scenarios on the go here. The first is ASL122 - Extracurricular Activities, where I'm playing the Russians against Lee "JackFlash" Massey's Hungarian horde. Pretty exciting; I've slaughtered a bunch of his guys crossing the big road, but at the expensive of malfing more AFV weapons than I can spare. It'll be close.

The second is WO2 - Failure to Communicate, where I am playing the French in a battle for the prestigious VASL League Tournament. Early days yet, but that giant swarm of Germans is sure intimidating me.

Still have three VASL games ongoing:

The current game against Patch is DA11 Sicilian Midnight. A nighttime attack on Italians in Sicily on the Hedgerow Hell DASL boards. Pretty good so far, we're about halfway through, and Patch is getting worried about his timetable. I've had a couple lucky shots that really cost him, but so far, anytime he actually confronts the defenders, they just fold.

http://forums.gamesquad.com/showthread.php?92763

The game of 45 Revenge at Kastelli continues against Blind Sniper. Not looking at all good for me. Losses are not great or horrible, but he's just slipped most of his troops out of my trap, and it is quite likely I won't get anywhere near the CVP I need for victory.

http://forums.gamesquad.com/showthread.php?91298

The lower-priority A59 Death at Carentan also proceeds. I'm doing my last turn before the German reinforcements come in. I'm doing a delicate juggle between trying to clean up his remaining at-start troops and finding defensive posistions for his upcoming counterattack (which has two directions it could come from.

http://forums.gamesquad.com/showthread.php?91403

I also got an offer for another PBeM game, which I'll take up when these last two start finishing up (maybe next month).

My buddy and I are most of the way through Scenario 2 - Assault of the Guards. My 63 Guard Rifle Division has made it too the barbed wire in front of the Spanish trenches, but I think I was too slow in my approach, and will not be able to get into Krasni Bor before the scenario ends. Some Spaniards in the peat bog really slowed me down too. Who knows?? Maybe I'll get lucky!

Next up will be Scenario 4 - Melee in Krasni Bor.

I have been working on playing this one. Last weekend I finished setting the game up. Due to its size I have it pinned up on my corkboard wall. After reading the rules I was very impressed with Ted Raicer's design of the game. The big counters are a plus. I had a problem with the font (of the set up hex number) on the set up cards. the number 9s look like an 8, so I had to look close.
On May 1st I was at Tennessee Game Days and got to play Manoeuvre with Craig and Command & Colors with Pete (not Belli). Both were nice guys and I enjoyed playing with them. I was sorry to hear Rick K (the organizer for TGD) lost his car in the flood.

I have decided that this month is the Fields of Fire month and I will pklay a campaign game.

My Afrika 2nd solitaire Vassal game is going slowly.

I got a programmed Vassal game of Hearts and minds with Alphawolf as soon as he comes back from a con.

[Dream] I will be starting a WiF game with Wendell soon, the Jensens and I will be playing Europe Engulfed, Colin is teaching me OCS with Case Blue, Leroy, billyboy, Iain and me are playing a game of Here I Stand. And in between games Joe Steadman will be teaching me ASL[/Dream]

Got a few turns in on my Korea mission tonight. A little tough remembering what I was doing and some of the rules but fun until I moved a whole platoon onto a card that saw artillery rain down on them. Not much left on that card now.

Looking at my first bad loss on a mission, Normandy seems so much easier now. Makes me afraid to move on to Vietnam.

ramkitty and I ftf this after I had tried out my new lime-green C4 Corner Cutter on this and Storm Over Stalingrad. We followed the example of play in the rules (something is definitely wonky in the example) and then played until turm 5. With setup and yakking and figurin' out stuff, it took us from 7pm - 1130pm. The germans were doing well, but Krasnodar was still in Russian hands.

We both liked the game and will give it another go soon.

Right now I plan to play some lengthy games this month, starting with this epic slugfest. The game is ready to go, Thad and I are just hashing out an optional rule about a superpower imposed ceasefire to give the game some more tension. Granted, there already is a ceasefire rule in Bar Lev, but we are working on deciding if and when a ceasefire roll should come earlier. So far, we are toying with making some kind of chart like the one found in Operation Kadesh. We'll see.

After that, plans are to unleash The Korean War followed by (possibly) Thirty Years War since we have not as yet had our yearly dose of this game. IIRC, we have played this at least once a year since 2006. Reds! has also been discussed. So it looks like May is going to be our epic game month

Got two (simple) scenarios of this soloed last month. But no chariots yet...

Want to get at least two more in this month. Ideally one with and one without runner infantry. Then I'll get a review up.

For now though, the space has been grabbed on my table by...

Here's a comment from a similar GL covering my play last month. I've since finished Sekmem.

Left you with wanting more??

Honestly?

No. It didn't.

The Sumer scenario is just too simple. If I didn't know more about GBoH and played just that one, the game would likely be back in the box and up for trade, and I'd be wondering what all the fuss was about with GBoH.

Reasons:
1) No chariots.
2) Single leader/wing per side. That just kills it really.
3) Nearly identical forces (leaders are a *bit* different)
4) Force makeup is almost all basic shock infantry (with three missile units each, one with bows, one with slings, one with javelins)

So Sumer doesn't really give you a feel for the activation system, doesn't have chariots, and is two small and darn near identical forces on a featureless plain.

Sekmem, the next scenario, is working out much better, and is still simple enough it makes a good intro.

1) Still no chariots, but really if the scenario does other stuff, that's OK.
2) Two leaders/wings per side.
3) More asymmetry in forces.
4) the situation seems to treat the sides differently. (But really, there's enough time to bring both sides into the plain before the battle really gets going, so this is somewhat illusory.

So Far, I'm two turns into Sekmem, there's been zero combat and it's already been tons more interesting than Sumer. Still not a great general purpose scenario, but a very good first scenario for learning. Give the new guy Egypt if you don't want them to have to figure out how to get setup after coming out of the city.

I want to run Sekmem, then a scenario or two with actual chariots. Preferably one with runner infantry and one without. Then I want to get a review written up.

Looking forward to getting a copy of this one this month.

Interesting, rarely depicted era and I just love the GBoH

Finally played Megiddo (session report submitted) but it was after the end of the month so this didn't end up seeing as much play in May as I thought. Oh well... I'm sure the June version will be along before too long.

This.

It stole the spot on my table from Chariots of Fire.

I'm currently trying to learn how to fly little bits of cardboard. It's going slowly. Once I get a bit more of a handle on it (or once I get totally stuck...) it'll be time to look for some PBeM action on the yahoo group.

Found a couple of diecast options:

http://www.greatmodels.com/~smartcart/cgi/display.cgi?item_n...

Though IIRC the F's had an ever evolving set of weapons up front, so don't know if these will do.

The number of guns up front didn't change, but the portals / openings / greenhouse did. The cheek guns went through several changes as to openings / portals and it depended on who built the plane (some were built on contract to Boeing). No matter, at 1/144th the accuracy can only go so far.

Ken Lury is in his second full rules practice game - a two on one with me taking a single Hayate against his two Hellcats.

The lead Hellcat - as of turn 5 is damaged with a wounded pilot. The second Hellcat just shoo'd the Hayate away from it.

Since "table" is ion quotes in the GL description, I think this counts.

Getting a VASSAL game of this started (hopefully starting this evening). Playing El Molino as the US.

I picked this game (and it's expansion) up a while back as a smaller introduction before trying to get players interested in Three Days of Gettysburg and then promptly moved away form where I was likely to find FtF players for this.

Finally getting it to the table though, even if it's a virtual one.

Kicked this one off last night.

Progress was slow as we were both new to the game/series and it was also my opponents first game using VASSAL.

We got through the first US activation (which is pretty limited by scenario rules), drew the US with the next AM and are halfway through that one. As such my opponent has been in a mostly passive stance (though even with his activations I don't see big sweeping movements) so far, though I did end up with a zero result in shock thus allowing the defender to "advance" and continue beating on me in one combat.

And from a completely unexpected direction too. Despite the entry hex being clearly stated in the rules.

EDIT: And apparently the expected direction was correct, the hex # in the rules was in error.

So, my first wind check (turn 5) in my first play, and the wind goes a full two points clockwise.

This is going to make things very "interesting" for the British.

Just did turn 6. While the British formation is still in shambles, a long range shot in passing did manage to flip the Astrée to damaged (she was already beat up, this was just a 1H hit) and injure the French commander. Both sides have a ship damaged as well. The Vernon for the British, and the already mentioned Astrée

Well, it's all over.

The French used the confusion caused by the wind shift to regain the initiative. They setup a massive strike against the Charleston. With both ships raking Evans' already damaged (but not flipped) flagship with full broadsides.

Somehow, when the smoke cleared, the Charleston remained in the same state she had been before being unloaded upon. [Both French ships rolled 0's on the attack]

Having botched their attack, and therefore squandered the initiative, the French were again in trouble. The British counterattack wasn't as nicely choreographed, but it was effective enough to sink the Astrée. And shortly thereafter, the Hermione's crew gave up the fight, allowing the British to continue on their way.

Note: I did not use grappling or melee for this game, just sailed around and shot at stuff. Those rules will be added in whatever scenario I play next.

Note #2: When a complicated multi-turn maneuver that is going to put your ships in command difficulties can't be avoided, at least try not to initiate it on a turn that is going to be followed by a wind check. Suddenly two ships that were set to be out of command for a turn were out of command and in irons.

Interesting to see this getting played.
May I ask if you are having trouble with the rules?
I own this game myself, but never gave it a spin.
Popular opinion seems to regard it either as a rotten apple or a hidden gem, i suspect the truth is in between?
I for one like chit-pull games, btw.
