As a newcomer to boardgaming, it won't take one long to find out about Agricola, Ticket to Ride, Settlers of Catan, Dominion or Carcassonne. Even if you never ever heard anything about board games, when you login to BGG for the first time, top 100 will most likely be your "way in".

But what about those little gems that we find out about after weeks/months in this hobby? Those games that didn't (yet?) make it to the top 500 but are some brilliant finds in themselves? Games that we would gladly play just as often as the well known titles in our collection?

Which is your favorite game outside top 500? Let everybody know, thumb this list and win geek gold! To enter this contest, you must simply thumb this list or my list entry. The least I can do - I will thumb each entry added to the list.

PRIZES:

The following prizes are up for grabs:
First prize: 10 One individual selected at random who thumbs this list.
Second prize: 5 One individual selected at random who thumbs this list.
Third prize: 3 One individual selected at random who thumbs this list.
No individual can win twice, so in case random.org returns the same winner for a second time, I will redraw.

Additional Door prizes: 1 per door prize. Later edit #1: Because the tipping might not be an exact round number, I will give out the last door prize as a 0.X , depending on how much I'd have left once all the other prizes will be drawn.

I will give door prizes to as many of you as I can, based on all the tips I get for this list and the GG I collect from other sources while this contest lasts. Door prizes will also be selected at random. No geek gold will be kept for myself. All tips that I receive will given away as prizes.

The contest will end on May 31st, 2010, 20:00 PM, CET (Central European Time).

I am adding as the first entry one of the little great games I found when browsing some items for an auction. It has made it into my collection and it's highly unlikely I will ever part with it.

Later edit #2: I am closing the contest at this point in time. There have been 601 thumbs for the geeklist and 50 thumbs for Dynasties. Most of the users thumbed both, but there have been 6 users only thumbing the geeklist item. This means 607 entries in the draw pool. I will use random.org to select the winners and will post the results as soon as possible.

At the time when the contest ended, I had 36.70 shiny in my reserve.

And the WINNERS are:

FIRST place and 10 as determined by random.org goes to:

Ranked 524th.

Probably the best deduction game that I've ever played. Players guide caravans through the desert trying to avoid thieves at the oasis. They have to deduce where the steals are going to be made by their card hands and by the movements of the other players. To consider the different probabilities about the information that is not known by them is a crucial part of the game.

Where's Bob's Hat? is one of the finest trick-taking card games there is. It is exceptional because it is superb with 3 players. It is nearly as good with 4 or 5 players. It is a favorite in my game group. Sometimes we'll even play it instead of Tichu when there are 4 of us. That says a LOT.

This duel of wizards is the cleverest simultaneous-action game I know, and it's a pencil and paper game from 1977... although these days it can also be played on games.ravenblack.net, which is more convenient.

Each turn, you select one of 6 different gestures for each of your hands. Different chains of gestures can complete various spells (40 in all), which you use to take down your opponents. With some spells affecting your opponent's ability to gesture, and other's providing protection from offensive spells, the game requires a very good and balanced mixed of bluffing and tactics.

Checked my ranked played games, and it looks like Comuni is my favorite outside top500. A minor surprise, since I haven't played the game in a long time. Something I need to take care of, I guess.

Comuni has some really good twist for a bidding / ressource management game. The common army is of course the easiest one to spot, but timing of the invasions (and mostly end game) is critical.

It requires probably 2 to 3 games to grasp the complete flow. But it gets really good (and not too long) then.

Rules are simple but the components are a bit fiddle - nevertheless the gameplay itself is quite good. I'd classify it as one step beyond fillers: there's a bit strategic planning involved already.

My love for this CCG knows no bounds. It went out of print due to unrelated monetary issues for the publisher, but has recently been picked up again!

If you enjoy Magic: the Gathering, then you owe this game a chance. If you don't, then it may be worth a look, since a lot of people's issues with MtG are fixed.

Plus, what other game features the "Ministry of Other Smaller Ministries"?

Yay, the second time within ten minutes that I can add this game to a geeklist! Hooray!

It just came out, that'll be where the low rank (#856) comes from I assume - I expect this gem to rise fairly quickly, considering it has the depth of a (maybe light?) wargame with all the shiny component fluff and chrome of an Ameritrash game.

And maybe more importantly, with the lightness of rules of an Ameritrash - things that traditional wargames handle with rules exceptions like "after round 3, you can, if you play the blue army, negotiate a truce with the red army, after which the yellow army might or might not switch sides depending on the position of their allegiance token" (example loosely based on Maria, which I really like) are simply event cards from a preconstructed deck.

Seeing how high this rises will be interesting. It's no mainstream thing like Chaos in the Old World or Small World, but has an appeal that I'm sure is built to last, and more replayability than the scenario might appear to hold at first sight.

This is my #1 game overall. It's got commodity speculation, hidden objectives, blind bidding, role selection, and stock market goodness... all in a relatively quick play time (under and hour for 2p, about 90 mins for 3p).... and better yet, it's incredibly cheap.

The game takes a few plays to really understand the strategy, so I think it scares quite a few prospective players off as they don't really have a grasp on ways to achieve their objectives, but when you understand the game, and everything clicks, it's a top-notch experience.

This game I heard about because of The Dice Tower top 100 review one year. I picked it up (along with all of the expansions) and it has proved to be a blast in both theme and gameplay. It almost feels like playing Team Fortress Classic with crazy combinations of vehicles, weapons, & items from all different time periods.

High Replayability:
Modular Board
~160 characters total (if i remember correctly)
An item deck that will never run out (still playing with the same stack each game and adding used items to the bottom)

I need to get this thing on the table again!!!

It is a wargame with a role playing aspect. One of the counters is you, and you can gain rank and power. However, if you are killed, you lose that rank and power, as well as your holdings. Mostly I have fond memories of playing this in my youth. An indepently published game from 1977 with some rule flaws, it is not widely known here, so is ranked a lowly 3541. I would still pull this out in a heartbeat given the right group of players.

Dragonmaster is my favorite "don't take anything" trick game. My circle has experienced many memorable turn the screw moments and some of our most told war stories are from sessions with this game. The choices are tough... making the most out of a disaster card deal or taking a chance on your chance at the Staff of Power make playing excruciating at times. The Dragon variant can be a little too chaotic and we rarely have played it because of this. Used to be able to find it in thrift stores with some frequency. Highly recommended. I think it fits this list... currently ranked #1157!!

"Can't we just play it where you take the tricks???" Merich, who was getting hammered.

Right now Samarkand is my favorite game and it's apparently ranked 969.
It should go up considerably as it gets more votes.
In addition,

The Adventurers at 549

and

Castle Panic at 527 are among my favorites.

1701 is a game that replaces Settlers of Catan for me. If I want to roll dice for resources produced from hex shapes, then this is the game. You can build up your colony by placing a variety of buildings to help your economic/war engine. You get to sail the high seas, exploring islands, and placing outposts on them. Multiple strategies for victory.

The cons for the game are thats it's not published in English and therefore doesn't have a distributor in the US. Rules translations are in the file section and paste-ups for the cards exist. The game is mostly language independant (except for cards which have paste-ups) so can still play even if you don't read German.

When I first played it I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. It is perfect for those who want a light strategy game.
