As a newcomer to boardgaming, it won't take one long to find out about Agricola, Ticket to Ride, Settlers of Catan, Dominion or Carcassonne. Even if you never ever heard anything about board games, when you login to BGG for the first time, top 100 will most likely be your "way in".

But what about those little gems that we find out about after weeks/months in this hobby? Those games that didn't (yet?) make it to the top 500 but are some brilliant finds in themselves? Games that we would gladly play just as often as the well known titles in our collection?

Which is your favorite game outside top 500? Let everybody know, thumb this list and win geek gold! To enter this contest, you must simply thumb this list or my list entry. The least I can do - I will thumb each entry added to the list.

PRIZES:

The following prizes are up for grabs:
First prize: 10 One individual selected at random who thumbs this list.
Second prize: 5 One individual selected at random who thumbs this list.
Third prize: 3 One individual selected at random who thumbs this list.
No individual can win twice, so in case random.org returns the same winner for a second time, I will redraw.

Additional Door prizes: 1 per door prize. Later edit #1: Because the tipping might not be an exact round number, I will give out the last door prize as a 0.X , depending on how much I'd have left once all the other prizes will be drawn.

I will give door prizes to as many of you as I can, based on all the tips I get for this list and the GG I collect from other sources while this contest lasts. Door prizes will also be selected at random. No geek gold will be kept for myself. All tips that I receive will given away as prizes.

The contest will end on May 31st, 2010, 20:00 PM, CET (Central European Time).

I am adding as the first entry one of the little great games I found when browsing some items for an auction. It has made it into my collection and it's highly unlikely I will ever part with it.

Later edit #2: I am closing the contest at this point in time. There have been 601 thumbs for the geeklist and 50 thumbs for Dynasties. Most of the users thumbed both, but there have been 6 users only thumbing the geeklist item. This means 607 entries in the draw pool. I will use random.org to select the winners and will post the results as soon as possible.

At the time when the contest ended, I had 36.70 shiny in my reserve.

And the WINNERS are:

FIRST place and 10 as determined by random.org goes to:

Thanks to everyone who entered the contest and/or took the time to add items to this geeklist, there have been some really, really good games added. Some have made it to my wishlist and this geeklist served it's purpose for that matter.

This is a fun, quick, easy game, yet it has nice strategy and a sort of clean simplicity. Almost anybody can learn and play it quickly.

I'd also second the OP's recommendation of Dynasties, which I recently picked up in trade and have really enjoyed. The other game that comes to mind is Lord of the Rings: The Duel which feels somewhat similar to Dynasties. Both games involve carefult planning of when to save and when to use the most valuable cards in order to make better use of a set of cards than your opponent.

A great 2-player card game with lots of "take-that" action. Build alliances, plan conspiracies, and conquer the opposing house... all in about 20 minutes. Added benefits are that it is easily portable (as it is simply a small deck of cards) and the Italian Renaissance artwork is excellent.

Current rank: #1083

This game is fantastic and entirely justifies the purchase of Icehouse pieces.

It's a bit on the heavy side, but it's a fantastic game of unintuitive scheming and resource management set in space -- what's not to love! I'm sure if this game were published with special bits it would command a higher ranking.

It's essentially the same game as El Capitan, they have almost identical average ratings, yet the latter is at #378, and this is at #642.

It's a fantastic great economic / area control game from the creator of El Grande and sadly lies in El Grande's shadow, possibly because of the off-putting box art?

This is my Favorite Bruno Faidutti Game!. It's a hilarious negotiation game where players kill dragons rather easily, but whoever was involved in the slaying get together and divide up the treasure in 1 minute. Players are looking for sets of gems and the most gold and silver they can get. What really boosts this game is the magic items that allow you to do certain things. A favorite one is the "Invisible Hand" which allows the owning player to take gems from any dragon on the table at will until he is caught doing so. Hilarious game great fun every time I have played.

Way too chaotic with 4+ players and best with just 2, it's sort of an area control/scoring tile-placement game with room for clever plays and calculated risk. Not sure why this is outside the top 500 (#922 right now) -- maybe people playing with too many, which I agree is very weak.

Pick this up cheap for 2 or 3 players, though.

Really awesome game with indulgent theme that makes you really feel like you're going through life's stages from being a peasant, to merchant, to banker, with all their intricacies at each stage of life: hardships on the way to making it richer, while being a peasant, constantly looking after others and striving to get the most revenue while being a merchant and all the little dirty and not so dirty deeds and tricks of a banker, whether to be part of building the town, gaining support from the people, "side jobs" at the tavern or flirting with the courtesans, bribing people here and there and all of this just to win!

This game has everything and it's just very, very good!

I have long been touting this as an under-appreciated gem. It suffered from being improperly marketed as the successor to El Grande - which it is not. A deep area building and control game with fairly simple rules and mechanics that lead to incredibly rich decisions and game play. In my opinion it's the gamer's version of Carcassonne.

much better mechanics than heroclix........i prefer the super hero genre more, but the way SWMs is structured to build them teams and ther cleaner rules (without sacrificing depth) make this a better game than the other CMG game listed in this list (heroclix)

add to that the absense of chase figures, makes this a better CMG choice

other that have yet to be mentioned

marvel heroes
thunder road
pursue the pennent
blood fued in new york

This one was very popular back in the day, and still commands a pretty penny on eBay, whether the 1979 version pictured or the 25th Anniversary revised version from Right Stuf.

But the time spent trying to smash your friend, only to have the key allies teased away at the end leaving you helpless in his territory- well this epitomizes what was best in the classic 'Ameritrash' games.

Character, allegiances, backstabbing, and loads of 'history' written about the various lands and peoples helped to make it almost as real as D&D was.

Check out the Yahoo group, too!
