As a newcomer to boardgaming, it won't take one long to find out about Agricola, Ticket to Ride, Settlers of Catan, Dominion or Carcassonne. Even if you never ever heard anything about board games, when you login to BGG for the first time, top 100 will most likely be your "way in".

But what about those little gems that we find out about after weeks/months in this hobby? Those games that didn't (yet?) make it to the top 500 but are some brilliant finds in themselves? Games that we would gladly play just as often as the well known titles in our collection?

Which is your favorite game outside top 500? Let everybody know, thumb this list and win geek gold! To enter this contest, you must simply thumb this list or my list entry. The least I can do - I will thumb each entry added to the list.

PRIZES:

The following prizes are up for grabs:
First prize: 10 One individual selected at random who thumbs this list.
Second prize: 5 One individual selected at random who thumbs this list.
Third prize: 3 One individual selected at random who thumbs this list.
No individual can win twice, so in case random.org returns the same winner for a second time, I will redraw.

Additional Door prizes: 1 per door prize. Later edit #1: Because the tipping might not be an exact round number, I will give out the last door prize as a 0.X , depending on how much I'd have left once all the other prizes will be drawn.

I will give door prizes to as many of you as I can, based on all the tips I get for this list and the GG I collect from other sources while this contest lasts. Door prizes will also be selected at random. No geek gold will be kept for myself. All tips that I receive will given away as prizes.

The contest will end on May 31st, 2010, 20:00 PM, CET (Central European Time).

I am adding as the first entry one of the little great games I found when browsing some items for an auction. It has made it into my collection and it's highly unlikely I will ever part with it.

Later edit #2: I am closing the contest at this point in time. There have been 601 thumbs for the geeklist and 50 thumbs for Dynasties. Most of the users thumbed both, but there have been 6 users only thumbing the geeklist item. This means 607 entries in the draw pool. I will use random.org to select the winners and will post the results as soon as possible.

At the time when the contest ended, I had 36.70 shiny in my reserve.

And the WINNERS are:

FIRST place and 10 as determined by random.org goes to:

Backgammon is my obvious first choice, with its perfect blend of skill and luck. However, as I am late to this party and Backgammon has already been listed, we can't forget Apples to Apples! Sure, this one will not be a regular choice for hardcore gamers, but this is so easy to get to a table of casual gamers and non-gamers. And when it does, it always provides at least 30 minutes worth of fun and laughs.

Hard to choose; could have taken Lifeboats or Honeybears, but I went with Samarkand. Short, elegant, not so much a solo game as you think the first time you play it. And of course I have a high wins to losses ratio

This is one of the my three 10s, an all-time favorite, that gets no respect in terms of the BGG rankings system. It is an elegant design and an excellent simulation of stock car racing. At its heart it is a card management game, but where the game really sings is in the advanced rules for things like pit stops, tire wear, fuel mileage, two-lane racing, etc. Best with 8 or more, I have been in races with as many as 40 people at once!

Don't know why this one gets such a bad rap. Yes, there are times when trying to guess what the other players will put in for an offer is an exercise in futility. But the way I feel about this game -- the same way I felt when I first played it -- is that there are some decisions that you can make with a decent degree of certainty. For me, where the game shines is sifting through all the options to find those key moves. I don't feel it's as chaotic as people make it out to be.

Wargames have lots of games outside the top 500. It's not too simple, but neither is it painfully complex...highly recommendable. If you want to learn it before you buy it, I'd love to play you over Vassal (a play-by-email program). Just send me a Geek Mail and we'll set it up.

However, besides a wargame (which this one ranks in the top 100 as a wargame) I'd strongly recommend Santa Fe Rails. It's a great little railroad game from GMT. Focuses on cities and ownership of cities rather than railroads.

Scheduled for an English publishing later this year (2010). Excellent light auction game that has many paths to victory. It really requires you to do some forward planning. However, light enough to be a family game.

Other notable mentions that haven't been listed yet:

Excellent card driven area control game. Game plays extremely fast once you get the rules down.

Excellent area control game with action points and multiple ways of scoring. Actually plays better the more players you have and works very good with 6 players (which is a rarity).

I'm going with a Print and Play game that I found here on the geek. This is the first print and play game that really caught my interest here on BGG. I got it printed in color at Staples on quality paper and made the game board based on foam board. This is a great little game of hand management. Lots of fun with two people, and a good challenge in solitaire mode.

It's a game with almost no audience. The hardcore 18xx'ers dismsiss it for its flat stock market, and focus on route-building. Euro-gamers dismiss it as part of the 18xx genre.

Worst - Unit 1 by itself has some issues. But throw in the rest of the set, and this game shines!

I really like Mecanisburgo. There's a lot to learn, and oodles to do. Each corporation is different from the start, and have their own flavours. I'm impressed that so much value is included and look forward to playing again. Sure, it requires a little more work to learn than the cookie cutter offerings of most publishers, but I reckon it's much more rewarding.

I find the decisions interesting, the conflicts surprisingly tight every time, and enough options, certainly on turn 2, to customise your own style of corporation.

The world is full of more balanced, mathematical and certainly more simple games - but this means that there is more than enough room for something like Mecanisburgo on the market, where there's a lot of hidden information, backstabbing, surprises and mistakes can happen frequently.

I totally understand how for most people this game is nothing short of infuriating and fiddly, but I like its pure trashy aesthetic.

I try and spread it to as many people as I can. Check it out!

I really love this game, and it's great with a big or small group. I think it's highly underrated, but some people don't like it because it is very unstructured and the quality of the game is highly dependent on who you play with. If people are ultracompetitive and just want to win, they are going to ruin the game by forcing a hasty and inauthentic end to the story. The game is best when everyone is committed to collectively telling an entertaining story. If you have a group that is willing to play somewhat collaboratively, you are in for a real treat.

Also known as: 6 Nimmt, Category 5

One of my three favorite light/filler games and simple enough to grasp within the span of a minute, Slide 5 can support from 2-10 players. With 2-4 players, it's almost tactical; with 8-10, it's just flat-out unpredictable crazy. It plays well with any number, though, and it's hilariously fun (and cheap!).

Although at first impression this comes across as a very heavy Euro with direct conflict elements, its only once you try to master the whole "begin the game by trying to have the lowest score possible" strategies that you realize just how original and difficult this one is to work out. One of the very best.

Highly underestimated game. Blame the poor theme pasted in it.

It’s better and more interesting than Ingenious, which is a very good game, but Genesis is simpler and richer.

If you like Knizia games like Ingenious and Samurai, you must try this!
