This is the traditional weekly thrift and bargain finds list.
These lists may start empty but as always: add your items.
Put in what you consider a bargain, tell us how much you paid and the place you got it from. Bargains can be thrift store finds or any second-hand purchases or discounted boardgames bought new. Don't forget to add your encounters with the Thrift Store Irritant Squad™ and any other embellishments in order to make it even more interesting.
The Weekly Thrift List Wayback Machine The Grand Vizier is maintaining a list of all the weekly thrift lists through time, and will be adding stats and interesting tidbits for each week. http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/48522
Games to thrift just for the components Speaking of parts, here are a list where the games may not be great, but the bits sure are. There are many great ideas for repurposing thrifted bits here. Thrift store games you buy just for the components
Our GeekGuild: The Ancient and Loyal Order of Thrifters. Enter the halls of thriftdom at your own risk. Do mind the stacks of prized games. Don't mention the musty smell and try not to sneeze. Would not have normally gotten this, but this was only a dollar and in really good shape. The cards are still in the cellophane! How could I resist that? It is a 1976 Avalon Hill Ed.
Missing four guys, but the donator clearly knew that, as there are four extraneous pieces in there. An army guy, a lego guy, an elephant, and something else I can't remember right now..
After spending several weeks thumbing everyone else's finds, I finally find one worth posting. Complete and looks like someone just attempted to play and gave up. The box should have been described as in excellent condition but a scribble from a black marker scarred it for life.
...a scribble from a black marker scarred it for life.
Seeing how it is hopelessly scarred for life, I am offering to remove that stigma from your game shelves. Just send it along to the Island of Marred Games (I am the overseer of that island) and we will be sure to give it a fitting place to live out it's shameful existance.
Sometimes, a careful hand with Goof-Off or Goo-Gone can wipe off permenant marker. However, there are so many different litho inks and paper textures, testing in an inconspicuous area would be the first step in any such experiment. Most of my games still proudly wear their thrift store price tags. "Yea, I did get this copy of Acquire for 79 cents..."
OK, So... I knew this is supposed to be a turd. I will give it a shot, though. There are some piles of crap that I actually like.
IF NOT, I am still happy. These happen to be the colors of gems I need to complete a copy of Discovery Toy's Bazaar. So, now I actually have gems from the same company. That is nice, either way you cut it.
Also, I have wire shelves that I have been using crap boardgame boards on in my kids room. Makes a nice surface for sliding things in and out of, and closes the holes so small toys can get in. Plus it is a great way to reuse what a number of people think of as crap.
Plus, a nice velvet bag.
Heck, maybe I WON'T play it!
$1.99 GoodWill - Newark
Plus, more important than the game, I got the oppurtunity to help someone by chance. I love it when the timing is right to be there for someone when no one else is... a little old lady needed a jump for her car... but didn't have jumper cables. She insisted on me taking money for the help but I absolutely refused. Who takes money from a little old lady on a hot day that needs a jump to get home in the A/C????
So then I go to the St Vincent De Paul (which now has better hours than 11-1)... And I snagged a Bazaar. No, not the one I needed to complete, a new one I need to complete! Hah! Actually, I just need just need the die.

I noticed some discussion about potential rules differences. I actually have both and I can compare them next to each other tonight!
Another one for my son. Currently he is having some troubles with memory. I think it is an excercise issue, honestly. But some times he has trouble remembering what he did the night before. Sure, there is little incentive to remember, sometimes... but I think this would help excercise that as a great many of the questions are about remembering things.
Either I'm getting pretty picky or the pickings are pretty slim...and honestly, I think it's the former...but I'm not picky enough to leave this. Been wanting this one for a while. Now it's MINE.
$2.99 - GW in Gahanna.
Box in VG condition - and RUBBER BANDED (the new standard at this GW - though they still use grease pencil for the prices). Haven't had time to inventory yet. Does the smaller box inside actually fit ALL 92 figures?
[EDIT] MISSING ONE SILVER INFANTRYMAN (though a LOT of my armies have minor weapons damage...but that does not affect gameplay... ) Can anyone spare me a silver infantryman, please?? [/EDIT]
That's right next to where my wife used to work. Do you every drive from there up Hamilton to Morse? If you have, I am sure you have seen the Goodwill sign across from the school about halfway to Morse. That is the day program, she just left last week!
I like that Goodwill. We used to also live right behind there on Landover. Good times for a young couple
Anyway... I may sound stupid for saying this to thrifting vets... but I have used a dry tee-shirt to remove grease pen. It takes three passes, 1 dry, one with a very very small amount of moisture (think, breathing on it), and then another dry pass.
I have only run into trouble with red pen on white boxes, but I am starting to prefer the pen to the sticker. You can't get sticker gunk off without a serious effort, and usually significant moisture.
Now I have the Asian and Indian beauties to grace my bookshelf! Wonder where they are and what they are doing today? I like to think they slipped some poison in beard-guy's dry robroy (with a twist) and made off with some secret documents which they sold to the KGB for a tidy sum, then used the money to start a chain of restaurants with an "owl" theme. Now the beauties are retired, all living off the profits together in a mansion on tropical island, sipping drinks with umbrellas in them and playing Mah Jongg and Parcheesi in between pedicures and facials.
Another concept for this photo included a cat to sit on Woodward’s lap, but the cat peed on him. Yes, when you look at this distinguished man sitting at the table, you can now know that his lap is secretly spoiled with cat pee.
If the rule of thrift stores is "always check the hanging bags", then the rule of yard sales is "always check the big plastic tubs". I rummaged through a "$1 each" tub and found Bandits. It was missing the rules (I've already printed them), so she let me have it for 50 cents.
This is a relatively new game and I have not seen it on the thrift GeekList.
I decided to quickly drop in to my local library used book sale while walking to work. I couldn't believe my fortune at finding an unpunched copy of Totensonntag on the shelf for $2. To top it all off, I discovered that the inside cover of the rule book was signed and dedicated by the designer! Yeah.....
Another Knizia children's game with 24 animeeples (+ 1 guideeple), for €1 at Salvation Army.
Tried it with my wife and our one-year old boy, mostly playing around with the animals on the board. He actually managed to use the plastic trees as a dice cup, came up with it by himself!
What a proud AND sad day for a Euro-gamer dad...
I think this will be an OK entry game two-three years from now for junior, it has roll-and-move, set collection and memory aspects. Cute components.
Any members of the Thrift Guild who live in the greater Kansas City metro area are invited to come visit me and my family at ConQuest SF&F Con this coming weekend (May 28-30). We'll be running the Children's Programming upstairs, and you don't need to buy a membership in order to drop by and introduce yourselves.
Our hours will be: Friday = 1pm - 5pm Sat & Sun = 9am - 12noon; (lunch break); 1pm - 5pm
We are planning to move to the KC area in the next year or two and would love to meet some fellow thrifters beforehand.
Potential Target clearance alert. I noticed our Target had about five copies of Clue Secrets & Spies on clearance for $16.78. Too much for me at that price but 50% off will get it to $11.50 or so and 75% in the $5 to $6 range, if they last that long.
The Thrift Store on Olive in U. City may possibly be moving as early as next week. At least that was what one of the workers told me today. She said she had timed it, and it was 22 minutes between the 2 locations.
The place as more tidy then usual, and they were sweeping the floor.
All the signs seem to confirm that. Their last day in the old location is Sunday May 30th, and there's signage at their new address saying "Thrift Store Coming Soon."
I swung by there Saturday afternoon thought I didn't see anything worthwhile except for a Stratego Nostalgia wooden box edition but I thrifted one of those not too long ago in unplayed condition so I left it behind.
I swung by there Friday evening and saw the same thing (leaving it there, of course). Maybe we need to coordinate better.

I typically only go to that one on weekends but with it moving out to St Charles, it might be every other weekend (if not longer) - I just don't go out that way very often.

Yep, my local store had 5 or 6 on the clearance shelf. I'm keeping my eyes on them and will scan one occasionally.
