It is funny how, by virtue of this boardgame passion that we share, we may do things that "go against the grain". And we may even do it without realizing it.

For instance, these days I caught myself reading the rules for a brand new boardgame I had just received, while watching a soccer game on TV.
That would be ok, if it wasn't for the fact that:
1- Brazil was playing...
2- the TV was on my living room, which was full of people cheering,and...
3- the fact that I AM BRAZILIAN.
I mean, c'mon, I'm not supposed to take my eyes out of the TV set, right ?
(Well, wrong.)

Anyway, this geeklist is for sharing occasions when your geekiness became shockingly evident to those around you.
Tell us what was the context, what you specifically did, and what made it noteworthy...

Ok, that was the board game I mentioned on the geeklist description, I was checking it out when (I guess) I was not supposed to.
Embarassing moments ensued when attention turned to me... "what are you doing ?" was clearly spelled on everybody's faces.

Well, at least I was not checking out Die Macher, or something like that.
(which I actually did right after the match).

I was reading the rules for Venture (and Tower of Babel) last night at my daughter's softball game (she's 10). I don't think anybody else knew what I was doing, but I almost always take reading material for those SLOW moments in the game where they're just standing around waiting for something to happen....which is most of the game really (except when my daughter is up to bat or out in the field).

I use a plastic hinged box that is big enough to hold a standard sheet of paper as most rules sheets fit in it and it keeps them protected while shoved into a backpack, etc.

Full list of games rules I had in there:

Venture
Tower of Babel
Masons
Detroit-Cleveland Grand Prix
Amyitis

True story today!

I recently math-traded for this game and excitedly told my wife about it.

"Why exactly do you want this game?" she asked.

And I said, "It's talked about all the time on BGG."

"A game of memory," she said. "About boobs."

"Yep," I answered, "but it's more than that. I doubt it's even a good game. But I bet everyone asks to see it out of my hundreds of games."

"You know why you bought this game and everyone talks about it on your on-line gaming site?"

I looked quizzical.

"Because you're geeks," she said.

So there you go. Geeks are people who think pairing up pictures of breasts on small square pieces of cardboard is funny. It does sound rather juvenile now that I think about it.

I used to go to parties at a friend's house, who had 3 kids. Parties were usually attended by many other non-gaming couples as well.
Because I'm probably a geek whistle, I was the only one to bring boardgames with me.

That per se is not so noteworthy, however once I introduced Lupus in Tabula at this one party, the kids got immediately hooked. So hooked in fact that they nicknamed me "Uncle Werewolf".

The nickname really stuck, and everybody else started calling me like that.
Heck, I started being even introduced like that.

Eventually I moved away and lost touch with all of them. Looking back, it feels good to know that I was able to introduce many people to the hobby... However the "Uncle Werewolf" thing was definitely on the geeky side of the house.

Geekiness comes in all shapes and forms.

One of the worst is when you own a perfectly good game, such as AH, which is very good all by itself, but for which you can buy many expansions already, and YET.....you still find yourself spending many many hours designing your OWN expansion or version of the game.shake

Like me. whistle

Instead of playing loads of AH, and buying the expansions, I am making my own version using Strange Eons, set in my hometown of Wolverhampton, in the present day. It means a TOTAL REMAKE. It`s taking HOURS.surprise

It will be Wulfrun Horror (a person born hear is a Wulfrunian, after Lady Wulfruna who founded the town). I`ve done the characters and allys, and common items. I`ve started the board. gulp

I am a geeky geek.

My wife finally realized I she had married a true geek when I actually volunteered to play this with my stepdaughters and their friends. Which isn't, in itself, all that bad. But there were more players than there were pieces, so I was "forced" to use my Darth Vader trivial pursuit figure as my figure. It went rather well. I got to move around, use the vader breathing sounds, and say things like "I find you lack of selection disturbing" in my best JEJ voice.

Many geeks will create custom maps for games.

Other geeks will regale you with the details about an RPG setting.

But only the geekiest would contemplate something like The Imperials of Eberron:

Or if that's not geeky enough, how about The Powergrid Of Eberron?

And for the record, I recite Monty Python while working on these.

Out geek that, if you dare!

My director approached me with "an opportunity" to tutor some Korean professors in English, and I found I couldn't decline the $35 an hour rate, not because I needed the money, but because my mind translated that into earning one boardgame per hour.

A girl in our apartment complex came over and we ran and was watching/hearing us for five minutes and asked what the heck we were talking about. What did we do? We ran and grabbed our whiteboard and diagramed how dating is related to wave theory and several mathematical equations.

Nope, of course not, let's see where the FLGS are located and possibly even find a hotel in the vicinty of these. Well, I have always known I am a Geek. I mean, staying up until 3:00 am playing Star Trek at a Con, dressed in my Engineer costume (Original with the tight boots....). I made my first Phaser TypeI when I was 16 out of wood and hanger wire (and it looked good too..). This was in the early 1970s...

My Boardgame Geekness happened when we had a game group that spent months playing Conquest of the Empire when it first came out. My friend who had the game was scheduled to leave (and be inducted in the Marines) and the game went OOP. Mind you, this was pre internet, so I decided to make my own copy.

I constructed latex molds, and made parts out of plaster and then varnished and painted them. I did make some modifications:

Fortifications: larger
Ceasars: bust and much larger (as the originals were easy to confuse with generals)
Calvary: like chess knights, but all different colors (they are horses...)
Infantry: sheilds
Galleys: my own design, and then I put the sails on backwards (Ooops)

Board out of leather with paints, and larger
I made a "Dice Tray" with rules synopsis and hit chart. ROLL ON THE TRAY!!!

All - in - All it came out nice, and we played it a lot over the next few years. It did become less played after several of the game group tired of it (including one member who had nightmares that we were paying on top of her in bed, and waking her up to make her moves!)

Anyway, through the years I have made a number of Hand Made games and expansions. Sometimes the reason is OOP or costs. Other times it is just because I have to make things. Today Sculpy is my preferred medium.

Bob
