Games are great, obviously, but cheap games are greater.

Sometimes, though, you have to pay a lot for a game you really want. Especially if it's out of print or hard to find. When I spend a lot of cash on a game I really hope it turns out to be worthwhile.

I just made the most expensive boardgame related purchase I've ever made (I know it's not much for War of the Ring Collector Edition or Settlers of Catan Collector Edition type people, but it's a lot for me), and it made me wonder:

(1) What's the most you've ever spent on a single game?

(2) Was it worth it?

(3) Do you have a high price tag phobia?

By far the stupidest purchase I ever made. I have hundreds of pieces that cost me hundreds of dollars and I probably played less the 6 times.I let my obessive compulsive disorder get the better of me . By the time I got hit with the reality stick I probably had spent between $500 and $1,000 dollars on pieces. soblue

The list price for this one in the USA in the early 1980s was $45. Given the rate of inflation since then, I'm sure that's over $100 in 2010 dollars.

Not my story, but a friend's: She really wanted Shadows Over Camelot, but couldn't justify spending $50 on it (she was still a student then). She then proceeded over the course of a couple of months to buy about $200 worth of games (including about 20 for $100 at a game store closing), before she realized that maybe she could afford the $50 for SOC after all. I know she never regretted the purchase.

(1) What's the most you've ever spent on a single game?
Someone already listed Roads & Boats, so I'm listing my 2nd highest

$100 for Kohle, Kie$, & Knete. Bought it from a gentleman in Germany - using a direct bank transfer. I think it was like $50 for the actual game, and right around $50 more for the transfer fees and such. It felt very shady, almost like I was falling for one of the "send me $1000 now and I'll give you $1,000,000 later hoaxes.

(2) Was it worth it?

Definitely. This was before the english edition "I'm the Boss!" was released - and even now, I'm glad I got it. The artwork IMHO is just so much more vibrant and fun in the Schmidt Spiele edition.

(3) Do you have a high price tag phobia?

Well, there's a limit, of course - but it doesn't bother me to buy an OOP game at a higher price.

(1) What's the most you've ever spent on a single game?
A lot. A couple grand across a few years, from the day MWda released to a month or two after its demise.

(2) Was it worth it?
Absolutely. I mean, the pieces are not worth much today due to high supply and low demand, but I got plenty of play value out of them. Hundreds and hundreds of games with and against some of my very closest friends.

(3) Do you have a high price tag phobia?
Today, yes there is a price limit. Back then, with more disposable income? Not so much!

I have no way of calculating the exact cost, but the amount would probably be in the realm of 4-digits.

Played a lot of CCGs through the years, but this was "gaming-Trek-geek nirvana" for me when it came out. And I bought a LOT of it.

Had so much fun with it, made some great friends and some great times - so it was definitely worth the expenditure.

Definitely not high-price-tag-phobic.

(1) What's the most you've ever spent on a single game?

Not including the countless amount of money I have put into games like Warhammer or HeroScape, this is one of the higher priced items I have purchased, price was approx. $170 US.

(2) Was it worth it?

Yes for a couple of reasons. I am a fan of the Risk games (trying to complete a Risk collection now) and also a fan or Lord of the Rings, so this was a must to one day purchase. Also my 7-year-old is really getting into both Risk and LOTR right now, so the purchase came at the right time.

(3) Do you have a high price tag phobia?

Not really. I try not to drop a lot of money at once, but paying high prices for games isn't really an issue if it is something I want and something I will play with my sons. I find that even expensive games are not 'expensive' after a few plays, the price-per-hour of fun you get out of a game (after a few plays) becomes much cheaper than going to the movies for example.

I'm half Swedish, so I just had to hve this. I couldn't find this anywhere so I wrote Dan Glimne (designer) who hooked me up with a store in Malmo. Approximately $65.00 ALONG WITH another $45.00 in shipping, adding up to $110.00 give or take a buck. But that's not the end. The completist in me said that I should also own the expansion. Mr. Glimne then sold me a copy from his own stash.
Price about $25.00 and a whopping $35.00 shipping, so the final price for all was (give or take) about $170.00.

Was it worth it? Like I said, I just HAD to have it.

Do I have a price phobia? Evidently not.

(1) What's the most you've ever spent on a single game?
I bought this one while visiting Malmö, Sweden, when I was on vacation in Danmark.
I knew that games were much more expensive in Sweden and Danmark then in Holland were I live. But I just had to have this one.
And it was before the international version came out (I even didn't know that at that time)
I paid 54 euros ($68), where this would cost about 40 euros in Holland.

(2) Was it worth it?
It totally was worth it.
I love the game, and love the fact that I have the original Scandinavian version

(3) Do you have a high price tag phobia?
Yes, more or less. I think that between 30 and 40 euros is a good price, but I like them cheeper.

I am a big fan of 2nd edition warhammer but I dislike the current rules and style of miniature design. To that I could live in my own little 2nd edition bubble I set aside some cash for what has been my biggest single game blowout ever.

2nd edition box set -$25
Dark millenium expansion - $15
Eldar, ork, marine, imperial guard, chaos, genestealer cult, (all rogue trader and 2nd edition miniatures), and chaos cult -$2000

Unfortunately I am a terrible painter so I had to pay a friend to paint a few armies for me and make me some scenery.

Painting - $1500

Project total - $3740 (with about $750 worth of painting to go)

Was it worth it?
I think so. I have all of the armies that I wanted to have as a poor student and get to play the game regularly.

Well, there's the roughly $1000-$1500 I've spent on Warhammer 40K, and about half that on Lord of the Rings SBG, and Twilight Imperium 3E was up around $110.

But my single most expensive game was the 1984 version of "Conquest of the Empire." "Bought it Now" on eBay for $75US, which upped to about $100CDN with exchange and fees and whatnot, and then got hit with about $60 in delivery fees and duty when it showed up at my door.

Worth it? Totally! The day I first played the second edition of Axis & Allies and saw ads for Shogun/Samurai Swords and Fortress America on the side, I wanted to collect all three. Then I found out that the Gamemaster series included Broadsides & Boarding Parties and Conquest of the Empire as well, and I knew it was one of my geek goals to collect all five games.

Conquest was the toughest to find and the most expensive but it was the one that completed the set for me, and fulfilled that geek goal. Now the next goal is to complete the Con Grand Slam (ComicCon San Diego, PAX Prime, GenCon Indy, and BGGCon) in one year.

This is number 2 at $120 ($5 less then I paid for WiF).

I was at Pacificon last year, looking for something to play and saw that there was an opening for BaHotH. I sat down and fell in love with the game. I ended up playing 3 different times over the weekend. At the end of the last game, I said that I was not looking forward to finding a copy on ebay. The guy running the game (same GM all 3 times) said that he had a backup, unpunched copy in his car, and would I like it?

Worth it? @#*& yah! Even with the flaws in the game, and the upcoming reprint, I don't regret a penny I dropped on this. It has also proved popular at game night.
