Games are great, obviously, but cheap games are greater.

Sometimes, though, you have to pay a lot for a game you really want. Especially if it's out of print or hard to find. When I spend a lot of cash on a game I really hope it turns out to be worthwhile.

I just made the most expensive boardgame related purchase I've ever made (I know it's not much for War of the Ring Collector Edition or Settlers of Catan Collector Edition type people, but it's a lot for me), and it made me wonder:

(1) What's the most you've ever spent on a single game?

(2) Was it worth it?

(3) Do you have a high price tag phobia?

(1) What's the most you've ever spent on a single game?

The most I ever spent on a single game was roughly $200 for a perfect shrink-wrapped copy of Merchant of Venus.

(2) Was it worth it?

Sure, it was worth it to me.

(3) Do you have a high price tag phobia?

You decide.

1999 AH/Hasbro Acquire, shrink-wrapped roughly $90
Indonesia roughly $90
Roads and Boats plus &Cetera roughly $150
1825 Units 1, 2, 3, R1, R2, R3, K5 & K7 shrink-wrapped roughly $275
Lost Valley shrink-wrapped roughly $79
Stepenson's Rocket shrink-wrapped roughly $60,

but then there are some games like 1856 and 1870. I got shrink wrapped copies for about $10 a piece. There have been some games that I passed on because the price wasn't justified in my estimation. It is case by case with me, but I probably spend too much on games. blush

To be fair, I can't exactly remember how much I paid for this. $140.00? 180.00? Possibly more, especially when it came down to shipping (US to UK). The added nightmare that came with that could be counted as emotional cost.

Worth it.........I certainly thought so at the time. Of course, I also had more money than sense at that time. I wouldn't sell it very quickly, and I'm certainly glad to have it. But I'm not sure I would do it again. Unless I had so much money to spend.

1. $130, although I had won a NCAA pool that financed it.

2. No, the game's skill level is too high for beginners. Everybody wants to play when they check it out but nobody wants to play a second time.

3. $50 is my limit for a game. When you get a winner like, say, Zooloretto it is an incredible bargain. I do have a weakness for dexterity games, though, and they can be pricey.

A: When you consider I have every expansion, this is by the far the most i've spent. Probably 300 plus.

B: worth every penny. My son and I have played for probably 150 hours so far, so $2 per hour to this point seems pretty good to me.

C: I will pay any amount for a game I want. I put aside $30 every 2 weeks into a game fund, as long as there is money in it, I buy whatever I want. I have no hesitation on price tags.

I bought this online from a store that is based in Canada. I paid $85 USD for it and have never looked back. I bought it because my family loved ubongo (I lent it to a friend and she lost it) but after a few plays, Ubongo was a little too simple. Ubongo 3d is so hard to find so I do not regret the purchase whatsoever. The pieces are awesome and will hold up for years to come. This game is great because anyone can sit down and play it.

I don't have any fear to put down money on a game as long as I do my research first. I have spent too much on games before that don't get much play, so I do my homework now. Also, my collection is at the point where I don't need to add games very often.

(1) What's the most you've ever spent on a single game?

The most I ever spent on a single game was $58.39 for a used but very good copy of MechWar 2.

(2) Was it worth it?

Obviously if I spent that much on it. It was my "grail" game, I'd been after it for ten years, and previously I'd see it routinely sell for over $100. It's also OOP.

(3) Do you have a high price tag phobia?

Anything over $50 - it had better be in good shape, preferably mint, OOP, and/or come with a lot of "extras" - counter trays, OOP wargame magazine articles, counters, maps, etc.

(1) What's the most you've ever spent on a single game?

The most I have ever spent is $50, and my goal for this season in life is to keep future purchases under this amount.

If I do end up spending this much on a game, I have to justify it somehow.

For Nexus Ops, I bought a copy for $40 + $10 shipping (total $50).

(2) Was it worth it?

Bought if from a couple who was selling it in order to raise money for adopting two orphans (brother and sister). That's a great cause! And I get a cool game that I can play with my 19 year old son, who just moved out of the house. We have game day on Sundays to keep in touch, and we love this one! Well worth it all around.

I also spent $50 on Ticket to Ride: Europe. Justifications:

1. I bought it brand new from the FLGS - 31st Century Games in Olathe, KS. Support the FLGS when you can!

2. At the time, this was the the only game that my wife would play besides Monopoly. When Jedi mind tricks won't break a Monopoly habit, throw cash at the problem.

Well worth it, since wifey will play something other than Monopoly with me.

(3) Do you have a high price tag phobia?

YES. Thus, I have joined The Ancient and Loyal Order of Thrifters

Now, the best VALUE or (best deal) on a game so far....the original Axis and Allies from the 1980's in a math trade. I spent $10 shipping Ranger and the game I received (A&A) was worth much more. It's still in the original shrink from the late eighties, box in mint condition. Yummy!

1) I got this for $90, including shipping.

2) No, not at all. I tend to solo play a lot of my games, so it has to be simple enough that I can keep track of everything, but have enough depth to keep me playing (re: my Dixie and Eagles card sets). This was one I got because of the hype, and besides the fiddlyness, it just wan't my cup of tea. I will admit, it looked damn nice.

3) Depends. I try not to spend more than $50 on a single game, but I'll drop serious coin after toys (see Heroclix, Star Wars Minis, and my new fave Monsterpocalypse).

I ended up piecing out Space Hulk for $108, so it's all good. But read the rules, watch reviews before you buy the hype, kids.

It was definitely worth it. I love the game.

I'm not scared of buying expensive games. I'm scared of my wife killing me if it's an expensive dud. I can't justify buying any of the collector's editions. They're just too expensive for identical game play. But as more Arkham Horror and Wings of War expansions are released I'm fast approaching the same dollar amount spent on a game.

I paid about $160 for this game, getting it from Wargame Depot (I think it retailed for $190). It's the most I've spent on a single game -- so far (I, too, want a copy of This Hallowed Ground).

Was it worth it? Oh, God, yes. One of my favorite campaigns, the game system is outstanding, and it quickly went out-of-print and is nearly impossible to find. Prices now are in the $350-$400 range.

High price phobia? Hell, no. I've spent over $100 for World in Flames and Warhammer Quest, and nearly $100 for Space Hulk (3rd edition), Runewars and Horus Heresy (Then there's this little matter of my huge Warhammer High Elves and Orcs and Goblins armies).

I read about a couple of you spending about the "outrageous" amount of $50 on a game... and I want to cry cry . Games in Chile are very, very expensive, and as we are far away from, well... everywhere, shipping costs + taxes (if you have bad luck and are stuck by customs) makes importing games as expensive as buying them locally.

The most I've paid for a game is $36.000 CLP (roughly $72 US at the moment) for Catan's Cities & Knights, and let me tell you... it's more of the same. Yes, it makes Settlers better, but for $72 surprise . No way.

Just for the record, Twilight Imperium costs $135 at the almost-only FLGS in Chile.

But the kicker is, I had a gift certificate for 15 bucks to the store I bought it from and it never even occurred to me to use it for this! It nearly expired and I ended up giving it to Naz to spend on Summoner Wars.

1) I paid something like $100 for this, but it came with free shipping.

2) It was totally worth it.

I've been on the verge of dropping over $100 a couple of times. I was ready to spend over $200 on The Devil's Cauldron: The Battles for Arnhem and Nijmegen, but the seller came across as being super shady after I initiated the purchase, jacking up the shipping he quoted me, using the phrase "I'm not trying to hustle you here..." Seriously, have any of you ever heard that phrase from someone who wasn't trying to hustle you? Anyway, I think it would have been worth it, and almost spent $350 to buy a combo of it and Fallschirmjaeger, but a car repair "happened."

3) So, I guess I'd have to say yes, although I nearly overcame it a few times!

The Cube

Previous to last month, the most I'd spent on a game was around $300 US for my grail game - Full Metal Planete.

But in the past few months, I've been reading up on Cube Drafting for Magic. I decided this was the end-all-be-all way to play Magic for the rest of my life, but without having to continuously buy cards. So I set about buying Magic singles for a cube. I decided to use a popular (and well-respected) cube by wtwlf123 on the Magic Salvation forums.

After figuring out which cards I already had, and which cards I would wind up proxying (had the Lotus + duals, but needed the Moxen, for example), the grand total was $728.82.

Fortunately, I had a few spare dual lands, a Time Vault and a Mishra's Workshop that weren't doing anything. So I sold them on eBay to fund the purchase of all the singles.

Technically (read: what I tell the wife), I'm not out any money - I just traded the dual lands + Time Vault + Mishra's Workshop for ~350 other cards. But there was a point where I had $728.82 sitting in Paypal for a few weeks, and I spent it all on Magic cards.

I have a few more proxies to make, and a few straggling singles on the slow boat to my house. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks, I'll be hosting the first cube draft from my shiny new cube.

1) It's now $728.82 (plus about $60 in sleeves)

2) Not sure yet. It's been a blast to research, acquire, organize and generally geek out about. And I have no doubt I'll get years of enjoyment out of it.

3) Not really. More so now that I'm married, but I still think games are a good form of entertainment to spend money on.

I had lost so many ebay auctions for this OOP wargame, that I pretty much gave up hope. But then I finally nabbed a shrinkwrapped copy of this for $170. Ridiculous, but actually a good deal, given that they usually run $210.

No regrets at all. It's my favorite game---worth every penny.

(1) What's the most you've ever spent on a single game?
While I don't have any stories of buying super expensive games, my first game purchase will probably be my most expensive game purchase at $60 (or full MSRP). I then spent $20 for the 1910 expansion shortly after, bringing the total to $80 before tax.

(2) Was it worth it?
Yes, but I wish I had known about sites other than Amazon to buy board games. I ended up just buying at the local game store. Would have saved me $28 if I had known better. The same goes for 1910 which could have saved me another $6.

(3) Do you have a high price tag phobia?
Yes. I don't like to spend more than ~$50 on a single game. My current list of soon to buy games doesn't have a single game over $50 and most games are under $30. The games that are over $30 are lower on my buy order.
