Games are great, obviously, but cheap games are greater.

Sometimes, though, you have to pay a lot for a game you really want. Especially if it's out of print or hard to find. When I spend a lot of cash on a game I really hope it turns out to be worthwhile.

I just made the most expensive boardgame related purchase I've ever made (I know it's not much for War of the Ring Collector Edition or Settlers of Catan Collector Edition type people, but it's a lot for me), and it made me wonder:

(1) What's the most you've ever spent on a single game?

(2) Was it worth it?

(3) Do you have a high price tag phobia?

(1) How much did you pay?
This OOP game cost be AU$120 (US$100) delivered.

(2) Was it worth it?
Ya, I think so. A friend of my has the same edition and it's one of my favourite games. The new edition (A Brief History of the World) is, IMHO, fugly and has crappy looking components. And this Hasbro edition is getting harder and harder to find.

(3) Do you have a high price tag phobia?
Yes. I don't like spending more than $50 on a game.

I paid $90 Cdn (plus tax and shipping) for Indonesia. It's my most expensive purchase for a single game. Considering I had never played it before, I was taking a bit of a risk. But it was worth it in the end; it's still one of my favorite games.

And, while I have a phobia about high priced games, I'm much more inclined to pay more for games from small companies like Splotter's and Tresham/Hartland Games. But if I ever spend that much on anything by Game's Workshop or Hasbro, may I be struck by lightening.

If you're counting expansions along with the base game, I no doubt spent the most on ASL stuff--or maybe my more recent purchase of the whole Lock 'n Load series.

But if we're only talking about individual games, I believe the $85 I paid for The Longest Day, back in 1984, is still the most I ever forked over for a board game.

Was it worth it? Probably not. I played at the game a bit, set up the campaign scenario once, and finally sold the game for a fraction of what I paid for it. Even today, it doesn't usually sell for more than I paid all those years ago.

Do I wince at a big price tag? Sure. But it's weird: if I can get a base game for under $50, I'll rush right out and buy all the expansions for it, even if the total runs to several hundred dollars. (I've so far resisted doing that with Runebound, though.)

(1) I spent $70 Cdn ($60 US) on a brand-new Through the Ages as a 2008 Christmas present for my brother because he's a huge fan of Civilization the video game.

(2) This was one of the worst game experiences ever. I felt there was no one else in the room even with three or more players. I spent most of the time 'housekeeping' as I moved around markers which a computer could have done better. I'm not sure whether the winner was the best strategy-wise or the worst at keeping track of their food supply.

(1) So for Christmas 2009, I again spent $60 US ($70 Cdn), but this time on an old copy of Civilization (not Advanced, I was holding myself in check). If my brother liked Civilization the video game, I thought he'd like the game it was based on.

(2) This was one of the greatest game experiences ever: easy game versions to teach the main game, lots of interaction, and simple game mechanics. My brother was ecstatic. It was like I had bought him a valuable antique that actually did something -- like the Wright Bros plane. Well, maybe not that, but you get the idea.

(3) What this taught me was not to have a high price tag phobia, especially with used time-tested games. When I break down the time spent playing a game I really enjoy, it still works out to pennies a minute.

I paid about 70€ (87$) for Master Thieves. Actually, I think it was worth it: the two boxes (the box of the box, and the game box itself) are gorgeous work. Also, the game isn't that bad either. It's quite good if you like memory games. I've spent money far worse.

If the game's good enough, I'd pay up to 100€ for it.

Not counting the settlers, or war of the ring collectors editions, I think the most I spent was on Roads and Boats. By the time I paid tax, and shipping, and of course, the expansion , my bill was $190!!

I have only played the game once 2 player, and a few times single player, in well over a year that I have had it. Still, the game is very very fun, and despite the high price tag, I think it was worth it. The expansion however, I am not sure yet..may never even play the base game enough to need to add the expansion in...

I paid ¥9400 for Agricola. Import costs to Japan can be pretty expensive, especially for heavier games right in the midst of their popularity.

When the dollar and pound AREN'T sucking as badly as they are right now, that equates to about $94 or about 47 quid.

However it seems to me that stuff is generally cheaper in the US anyway so I don't see that as particularly expensive and most boardgames here cost ¥6200 or so.
To put that into perspective, our rent is ¥95,000 a month and a 500ml bottle of Coke from a vending machine is ¥150.
Beer (drinking out) is expensive though at up to ¥900 for a Guinness in a bar.

(looks over shoulder to check for wife)ninja

I never had spent more than $100.00 for a game before this year.
Earlier, I decided to bite the bullet and get a copy of Merchant of Venus. I got a opened but minty copy for just over $100 and it came to $120.00 with shipping. Worth every penny! I should have owned this game years ago!
That was eclipsed last month. I collect games on The Battle of Gettysburg and was missing the crown jewel of the bunch, The Gamers This Hallowed Ground. I figured I would never own it as it sold regularly for >$300.00.
I always skim eBay and bid occasionally, only to be vastly outbid. I drew my line at $150.00. One day I creeped above my line and won one at $157.57. Shipping was only $8.00. So $165.57 got me an unpunched copy of one of my Grail Games.
Worth it? I sure hope so, but I don't see it crashing in value either. I am glad to own it and the maps are beautiful. I will also play some of the scenarios. I'm not sure I will ever play the campaign game, but I can if I want to!

I paid $275 for Antiquity*. Yes, it was worth it - it's a great game, and who knows when there will be another reprint? It was also auctioned off by someone who had lost their job, so it was for a good cause. It also, in the long run, wasn't any more money (or perhaps it even saved me money) because I wasn't buying a bunch of $40 and $50 games, looking for a substitute. When I bought Antiquity, I felt quite satisfied with my collection, and my wishlist shriveled down to only a few "maybe" titles. A few months ago, I got Antiquity's brother, Roads & Boats, from Boards & Bits' WA warehouse sale, for about $87 with free shipping! A fantastic deal on one of the last few retail copies. I'm already starting to see them listed for twice that. After my Splotter purchases, I don't really have high-price phobia, though there isn't really another high priced OOP game I'm planning to buy. I held off on Goa and Glory to Rome until their reprints.

(*I had gotten an unexpected gift from my grandfather, and spent part of it on Antiquity, and put part of it in the bank for a rainy day)

When Cosmic was out of print it was terribly expensive. I paid $225 for a copy of the Eon edition in very good condition that included 8 of the 9 expansions. I have seen similar games + expansions selling for over $500, so I think I got a good deal.

Totally worth it. I was able to enjoy Cosmic for ten years before Fantasy Flight was able to secure the rights and rerelease it.

12. Board Game: World in Flames [Average Rating:7.46 Overall Rank:623]
When I was into full-bore World in Flames, I would drop $200+ for a full set of the game about every other year. Right now, the same set is $379, but a person can get a 25% discount by being a Lines of Communication subscriber (the in-house newsletter that is supposed to be quarterly, with an annual plus counters, but which is more like put out annually, with the full edition every 2-4 years.) So I think the most I have ever spent on this was about $225, a few years ago.

Worth it? Absolutely. Given that one game can last a hundred hours, and we would play 2-4 games a year, that's about $.50 an hour for a hobby. Hard to beat the price, and even older editions hold their resale value well. I sold one copy on Ebay, punched and boxed, for $120.

(1) What's the most you've ever spent on a single game?

$515. Look up the game: it's from 1950 and only one person (not me) on BGG owns a copy. That gives you an idea of how rare it is. My father had this when he was young. In the late 70s, he tried to find it (no luck) and in the meantime, made me a copy by hand and by memory. Thanks to Ebay, we finally found it this year. I acted as the in-between (he never used EBay), so the funds did initially come from me until he paid me back. Believe it or not, this is a good price for the game. A crappy copy went for $656 the week before.

The most expensive game in my collection was $85 for We the People on EBay.

(2) Was it worth it?

For Red Barber baseball -- DEFINITELY! We put plexiglass over it and play it. It brings back old times.

For We the People -- yes and no. I got in April 2009 and played 3 games of it. Now that I got Washington's War (March 2010), We the People is on the shelf for good. Washington's War is such an improvement, that I don't see myself playing WtP. Why would I since the other is similar in mechanics, but far better (and shorter?). I'm not into owning games for historical/collector purposes. In retrospect, I should have waited, since WaW had made the P500 cut when I bought WtP, but I will say those 3 games were a blast -- but at nearly $30 a pop? (At least in the case of Red Barber, I can theoretically play hundreds of more times).

(3) Do you have a high price tag phobia?

Definitely! I would like a copy of Carrier, but I won't pay over $50 for a game, so that makes this game an impossibility. I only paid it for WtP because I love the American Revolution; I found 1776 to be a major disappointment, and I wanted to find a good game on it, and this had rave reviews.

Not sure if this /really/ counts, since they are usually handmade pieces of "art" (at least that is how I view it). This was a joint Xmas-Birthday gift from/to the wife and I and cost $400+.

Was it worth it? Probably. We have two small kids (3 and 5) and, while they have enjoyed playing around with the board, they really haven't gotten the skills + dexterity to play it "by the rules" yet. If they do, then I think it will have been worth every penny!

Do I have a $$ limit? Yes, I'm cheap :-)...but I've always wanted crokinole and the "joint" aspect made it an easier "sell".

Alternative entry:
I am a big ASL fan and, as others have mentioned, easily have >$500 of ASL products (and WIF products, as well...for that matter). But the single biggest boardgame purchase I made was a laminated map copy of the ASL scenario Kampfgruppe Peiper II. I had set my original ebay limit at $100 and finally just said "screw it" and won a copy at ~$120. With shipping it was ~130-135, I believe. This just beat out the $100 I dropped on a fully complete The Longest Day game last year from a wargaming buddy, who had bought a replacement copy for about twice that. My next highest game purchase after those two over the past 5 years is lucky $35.00... And yes, both of those purchases were definitely worth it IMO...

While Planet Steam was willing, this one wasn't. It started out as $40 US. Shipping was $20 US. Unfortunately, a month or so after receiving the game I received a huge Importing Bill from FedEx which added another $30 + bucks to the price. So this $40 game turned into a $100 game.

(2) Was it worth it?

Probably not, if I was being 100% honest. The game is very light, and while we enjoyed our play, it probably won't see too many plays over the years.

(3) Do you have a high price tag phobia?

I do, in fact. I'm extremely price conscious. I'll order from a different mail order company just because their price is $1 or $2 lower.

But for special items such as rare hard to get ones, out of print, etc, I'll break down and pay the price.

Yes it was well worth the money, because it is hard to find just the main game for less then $100. Yes some of you thrifty shoppers have found it for a few bucks, but your LUCKY. I have seen unopened copies go for $300 to $400.

Being a wargamer too, its hard to say does paying a lot for games scare me.

I paid 70 CAD for Lord of the Rings just a while ago. I knew that I wanted it and it appears to be just recently out of print. Stores and websites were going out of stock, so once I found a site that still had a copy left, I snatched it up.

I paid $85 for this game. The box was damaged, but the game unpunched. Since then I've spent $40 to print out a fan made map that includes the Western expansion, and $25 for some additional resource cards.

I think it was totally worth it, as I've been able to play this game five times already, and my current gaming group is playing this one every other month. This is my favorite game ever.

I do not have high price tag phobia. I play games all day every Saturday, and don't spend my money on much else, so I feel like games are a very worthwhile expenditure. I know guys who are into cars or sports, and the amount of money they spend on those activities is significantly more than I spend on board games.

Other games I've spent more than $80 for include History of the World, Twilight Imperium, Here I Stand, BattleLore, Magic: the Gathering and Monsterpocalypse.

I've only purchased 3 games at the $80 mark: Indonesia, Liberte, and now Kaivai.

PRICE - 60.44 Euro ($76USD).

Was it worth it? I don't know yet, it should arrive on Tuesday. I bought it straight from the publisher in Germany and have been waiting since June 3rd. I've never been so excited for a game before!

Do I have price tag phobia? Yeah, I can't imagine spending more than $99 for any single game and have managed to stay under so far.

Would I spend $100+ for a game? Perhaps, but it would have to be adored by my geek buddies and easy to sell/trade away if I didn't like it.

399 hard earned American dollars. Of course it was worth it. I doubt I'll buy anything boardgame related even remotely as expensive as this ever again, so no, no phobia.
