This week I read a newspaper report on the recent UK Office of National Statistics: Social Trends Report. It had loads of interesting stats in it, so I tracked down the full report online. Suffice to say that it was packed with a massive amount of data and analysis on UK trends spanning from population density, work, health, environment, transport and many other areas.

Like in a previous poll of mine I thought it would be interesting to see how The Geek’s population compares on some of these questions.
A lot of it is not easy to convey in bite-size chunks through a geeklist, or allow a simple poll to replicate the questions for Geek users, so I’ve picked what I think are the most interesting and appropriate items.

I've presented the UK stats from the report, added in the corresponding US stats where I have semi-reliably dug them up (feel free to chip in if you can add to this) and set up some polls to determine how The Geek's population compares with these averages. Why did I add the US data? US users make up the majority of active users of this site (55% according to the last user poll) so it seemed sensible to do so. I've also added some subsidiary polls to determine The Geek results split by US and Rest of the World.

If you don't feel comfortable responding to a question then don't. I haven't added a 'stay out of my business' option except on a couple of polls where it seemed a good idea to capture that amount of feeling.

Feel free to add additional stats and polls as extra items on this list.

Just a little background for context on our polls. We aren't a random selection of people, so our results are going to be skewed compared to the national averages I am quoting for UK and US. That isn't just because we play the niche hobby of boardgaming, but because we are mainly male, aged 26-45 and from the USA. Here are some extracts from the previous Annual Geek User Poll:

Sex
The vast majority (94.4%) of us are male.

Age
The biggest group of us (42%) are in the 26-35 age range and 75%+ are 26-45.
1% are 18 or younger
11% are 25 or younger
13% are 46 or older
Just over 2% are 56+

To show the difference, in the total US population 24% are under 18 years old and 12.8% are 65 years old and over.

National Identity
55% USA
8% UK
7% Canada
5% Spain
3% German
3% Australia
2% Netherlands
2% Sweden
Other countries 1% or less, mainly Europeans though.

Partners and Kids?
75% living with a partner (60% married)
23% single
2% are 'other'

Nearly half of us have children - 15% have one, 22% two, 7% three, 3% four or more.

Household Population Density

UK average household size has fallen to 2.4 (it was 2.9 in 1971) with 29% of households only one person. 35% two people, 16% three people, 14% four people, 4% five people, 2% six or more.

My initial thought upon hearing that was that more young people were choosing to live alone rather than get married, but further digging into the data showed that over two-thirds of the one-person households were people over 65.

US average is 2.6 Persons per Household.

Smoking

When asked "Do you smoke?", UK averages were:

6% Heavy (20/day or more)
22% Light (At least 1 cigarette per week)
72% No

The 6% heavy smokers is a huge fall - in 1976 26% of men fell into this category.
26% stated they were ex-smokers.

US Smoking 21% are categorised as 'current smokers' - people who have smoked over 100 cigarettes in their life and smoke 'every day' or 'some days' each week.

Not sure how these polls categorised cigar or pipe smokers. I assume they included them on some scientific basis.

Less than 1 per week

I have never smoked
Other - I smoke cigars, pipes, etc

Obesity

Obesity in the UK is growing at a frightening pace. In 1994 15.7% of UK adults were clinically obese.
In 2010 it has grown to 24.5%

However, this is still dwarfed by the US numbers:
In 2009 US adult obesity was 34.3% with an additional 32.7% categorised as 'overweight'.

The definition is the same in both countries.
Obese = Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30+

BMI is calculated by dividing the subject's mass by the square of his or her height, typically expressed either in metric or US "customary" units:
- Metric: BMI = kilograms / meters squared
- US customary and imperial: BMI = lb * 703 / in squared
where lb is the subject's weight in pounds and in is the subject's height in inches.

BMI Classification
< 18.5 underweight
18.5 - 24.9 normal weight
25.0 - 29.9 overweight
30.0 - 34.9 class I obesity

There are higher classes of obesity from 35 upwards, but I'm not splitting the group.

Poll
How would you assess yourself/how have you been assessed?:
Underweight
Normal
Overweight
Clinically Obese
