I've seen Geeklists before about the best line ever in a rulebook, now it's time to do one dedicated to the best lines in published errata. I only have one entry to add at the moment, so sure, it's a lame start for a Geeklist, I admit.

And yes, I "thumb myself", so what??! I like my own posts :-)

"MAP

1. (addition) The Captial of Neitherwold should be hex 1528. This addition is necessary when playing Scenario One.
2. (apology) We apologize to those who received the S&S map in colors other than the intended lurid pink. We hope that Players will not be inconvenienced by the drab-colored maps they may have received.

I've always liked this one:

Why is the Underground Lake on the upper floor?

See, it's a special kind of levitating lake, and... All right, it's a misprint...

My favorite comes from the FAQ for Descent:

Q: Why can’t I jump over water like I can pits?

A: As every hero knows, the dank water found in subterranean caverns is usually infested with deadly bloodsquids, ready to pull an unwary hero to his doom at a moment’s notice. As a result, only the most acrobatic heroes dare to leap across even the most innocent-seeming pools of water.

Formula D includes a street racing track that can be played with characters that dictate the car setup and allow the player to use certain special powers. One of these characters is Li Tsu Sun, whose special power involves using her beauty to distract other drivers as they pass her. The description of her power is, however, incorrectly written on the rule sheet.

On a small sheet of paper included in the box:

What more can be said about the beautiful Li, not only does she turn the heads of the other drivers, but she also charms the translators, which can sometimes make her be badly interpreted. This should have read the following:

[insert correct description of rule]

Scrimmage was published before it was fully baked. Some rules simply could not be reconciled with the examples. The errata said "if the example contradicts the rule, the rule is wrong".

First, some background: I call fight city "CAG's non-collectible CCG." It was first released as 2 individual decks (fear, power) sold in separate envelopes. Later, the game was repacked to include both decks together. James and company included an errata/FAQ sheet with this edition and couldn't resist injecting their typical humor.

My favorite line from the sheet:

"See, Fight City is a great game, but a lot of people didn't quite get it when it first came out. They played it wrong and hated it, and we don't blame them. We hate the way they played it too."

I dug out the sheet to make sure I got the quote right and discovered another line I liked:

"Oh, and you will also want to make note of the fact that our mailing address has changed since the old rule book was printed. Please, stop bugging that guy."

Note in the German rules:

Achtung: Nobody is perfect.

Translated:

Attention: Nobody is perfect. - Nor are we!
On two of the tiles you will find a dashed line on land. This is a graphical error. Please ignore the three lines and don't try to pull the ship over land like Fitzcarraldo did.

(I must have been lucky. There were no such tiles in my game)

I don't remember the card, but there was errata for it that included the sentence, "The card forgot to say this."

See, they told the card over and over to say that, but there's just no talking to it.

Not from errata, but from the Q&A concerning the "Sewer Movement" card play. Classic nevertheless:

Q: : I can't find anything that says this can't be used on armor. Can tanks use the sewers?
A: Yep. Yeah, I know...call it infiltration when armor does it...but yes, armor can use the sewer card.
A: At which point it becomes a septic tank. Ken Nied

Love it or hate it, Munchkin has one of the most thorough and most hilarious FAQ's/erratas ever.
My favorite excerpt:

Q. I have just drawn Divine Intervention face down. What happens now?

A. As the card says, no matter how it is drawn, all Clerics go up a level immediately. Show the card, and, if you are a Cleric, play the card in glee. Otherwise, play the card with disgust to show your contempt for those lucky people who are . . .

If you'll accept a slightly broader interpretation of "errata", I just came across this gem in the Twilight Struggle FAQ:

FAQ v. 4.1 wrote:
#73 Shuttle Diplomacy

Q. I control North Korea and that's all in Asia. My opponent has Shuttle Diplomacy. Now, of course I lose North Korea as a Battleground, but I do still have presence in the region right?

A. No, the card temporarily "removes" the country entirely from the equation.

Q. Who chooses the country that doesn't count? This is an issue only if Japan is Soviet controlled, as it would also affect the extra point for being adjacent to the US.

A. Because it is a US event, the US player chooses—and shame on the US player who loses Japan.

No, this is not from an errata sheet: it is from an e-mail I received from a staff member at Mayfair Games almost ten years ago:
We had bought Settlers for my brother-in-law, but, alas, there were no wood or brick cards in the game, and an overabundance of sheep cards, as well as an overabundance of soldier cards. So, I wrote to Mayfair, asking what could be done about this. The key part of Mayfair's response went like this:
"It appears that you have unintentionally bought the Nomadic Mercenary Shepherds expansion of the Settlers of Catan for your brother-in-law. Please send us his mailing address, and we will be sure to send him the deluxe version of the Settlers of Catan."

This is actual text from the back of the box:

WARNING:Previous experience with wargames is necessary.
Those new to wargames should not attempt "Struggle of Nations," as a familiarity with basic concepts is assumed.

What type of game comes with a warning not to play it?
You need to play other wargames before we will allow you, Struggle of Nations.
