This is my second Geeklist to give away a copy of my newly published party game "Pressure Point". This one is much simpler to win, just thumb the list. I will pick a random person and send you a copy of the game, and I will pay shipping. This contest is open to everyone. I will pick the winner the evening of Thursday, August 5th.

I wanted to share with all of you a brief history of how this game came to be. Enjoy.

EDIT: Due to the high response, I will select 2 random people and give them each a free game.

WOW! Talk about a high response. Thank you all for entering, and Congratulations to our 2 winners.

Story startes circa 2006

I am in the US Navy, and I live in a Navy Housing unit. This translates to lots of people my age that want to hang out every weekend. We always have a house full of people and and since I am the game collector, I am normally called upon for entertainment. Since we are talking about non-gamers, we mainly played a lot of outdoor games and party games. Everyone enjoyed playing games, but they always wanted more. I visted thrift stores and ordered new games constantly, always searching for the game that everyone would love to play and not tire of after 1-2 plays. I never found it.

Like many gamers I have ideas all the time for my own game designs. This was very early in my game design hobby, and I had only recently discovered Euro's. Most of my ideas to this point were pretty bad, and I knew practically nothing about the industry. I had in my head for a few months, I need to design a party game that will have some staying power for this group. I finally got my breakthough one night.

Backtracking a bit, I grew up in a very small village of 1100 people. We have 2 stoplights, but one just blinks red. In contrast to that I live in Virginia Beach now. Population 500,000 or so, with any store or restaurant you can thing of within a 10 minute drive. While at a gas station, I heard a radio commercial for a car dealership.

My thought process went like this:

Man there is a lot of car dealerships around here...
I wonder how many I could name...
I wonder how many I could name in 10 seconds...

My brain clicked, I drove the 5 minutes back home and had a nearly completed game when I got there.

That night I came up with about 120 categories and put the basic prototype together. One of my regrets is I never took a picture of the orginal game.

Well we did playtest it, the next night was Friday and the usual crowd was present. We played it several times that night, I made 2 or 3 minor changes, but suprisingly enough it worked. My wife made the comment "This is the one". At that time I wasn't convinced yet.

It was a hit with the non-gamers, so the next logical step was the game group. At that time we had in weekly event in a local coffee shop. In attendance along with others was my friend and fellow Game Designer Stephen Glenn. Thankfully he enjoyed the game, suggested a small rules change, and came up with a new title. "Pressure Points". He had a game published by R&R games and put me in contact with them. I played the game one more time the next week for good measure and mailed it in the next day.

That's what I had to do now.

3 months later, January 2007. I got conformation that they wanted to publish the game. Naturally I was pretty ecstatic. After working out the details, I began work on more categories. They asked me to come up with 1000. We sat up very late for a few days and eventually came up with enough.

Again it was time to wait. The game went into production as an electronic game similar to Catch Phrase, about a year and a half later, it fell through. They then redesigned it completly with cards. After several production delays, it was finally released May of 2010.

Back up a month. I got my first look at the finished product at the Gathering of Friends in April. However after playing it, I realized there was a mistake in the rules. The corrected rules are available to download in the files section. A very small error that makes a big gameplay difference. The game I ship to the winner will contain the corrected rules.

There are 3 changes in the second edition rules. The most important change is that you should start the game with 15 points. The orginal rules have you starting with 3 points, in this game you lose points and somtimes you have to pay points to other players. 3 was just not enough. The other 2 changes are just clarifications to the current rules.

Read the revised rules and I must say, this game sounds good. Great job, Brad.

d10-1 Has a little bit of "know your opponent" as you need to gauge how well you think they may know the subject matter.
d10-2 Nice little betting mechanism with a "press your luck" element with the Max 8 bid.
d10-3 Not really luck driven as no dice involved.
d10-4 Price point appears to be very solid (looks like it can be had for under $15).

Adding to my want list now. It seems like a game that I can suggest instead of Apples to Apples when the kids want to play a easy party game but has enough depth that a person is not totally dependant on other's choices to win.

If it goes over well, this may just end up being my "game gift" this Christmas for family members.

The game has done well so far. The first print run has sold through and the next one is in production. Barnes and Nobel stores will be carrying it as part of their impressive new game selection.

Next step- keep designing

Thanks for reading. I hope you all enjoy the list and the game. I am open for questions

Congratulations on creating a game, Brad.

My board game creation process was very unexpected and accidental.
I was trying for some time to think of a semi-coop game that would challenge new and veteran gamers but didn't have any luck.

I had to do something physical one day and decided to take an energy drink. It didn't help my body one bit but it kept my mind awake till the wee hours of the morning with random thoughts and it hit me, a game mechanic, rules and everything.

I hope I can find a publisher on the same energy drink here in the Philippines though. hehe.

Two questions:

Does the color of the cards correspond with different catagories (Blue = Pop culture, Green = Sports)?

How "kid-friendly" are the questions? Naming cartoon characters might be easier than naming famous Civil War battles.

Duane,

You are not the first to ask that question. I actually wish it were that way, but it is not by design. Green and Yellow seem to be eaiser in my opinion, but that is not official.

As for being kid friendly, the box says 13 and up. My son is 9 and he can play. I just go through and choose out a stack of eaiser categories, shuffle them and play. There are 704 categories total, I think there is a good mix of difficultly.

Great job! Your story here has certainly helped get me motivated to continue working on the various ideas I have for games. Many I have half started and shelved for one reason or another. Thanks for the motivation!

Also.. best of luck in sales for your new game.

It is language dependant and several of the categories refer to United States releated topics. IE- New England states, Vice Presidents, NFL teams etc.

Congratulations on your success! My son is a US Marine, stationed at the Naval base in Pensacola, waiting to class up. We've sent him a few games to deal with the monotony. As soon as I see yours at our local B&N, I will buy it for him as well.
