The Right Stuff - 2 Disc Collector's DVD
$3.99
Ohio Thrift
Southwest Blvd, Grove City, OH

Usually what you find DVD wise at thrift stores is crap. Bad movies on DVD bought for $2 and being sold for $3. I was pleasantly surprised to see this up in the "showcase" as I was making my way out of the store. The discs are in great shape (no scratches!) and the cardboard case isn't marred up or ripped.

I have seen used copies for 3-4 times as much, and this completes my "ultimate collection of film based on US Space program": The Right Stuff, From the Earth to the Moon, and Apollo 13".

After eight and a half years, my company's technical writer finally got sick of me and tendered her resignation. Yeah, she'll tell you that it's so she can pursue her dream of making movies, and even went so far as to pretend to open a production company in the area. So complete is her ruse that she staged a music video shoot recently and asked my daughter to be in it. But I *know* her leaving is because of something I did.

Maybe it's the unwanted gifts I lavished upon her. In my defence, she shouldn't have told me how much she LOVED word games, which, naturally, would make me keep my eyes open for some while I was thrifting. Oh, sure, she'll pretend that she was appreciative of these unannounced surprises, but her leaving the company shows the lie more clearly than anything.

So I had one last chance to show her I wasn't a complete creep, and whilst thrifting the evening before her last day at work, I spotted three books that might be of interest to her. One was on dramatic writing for stage and film, and two were books on how to make feature films on tight budgets.

When she looked at them, she picked up one of them and said "I was just about to order this one. How did you know I wanted it?"

Oh great. Now she thinks that I'm snooping her Internet connection.

Well, good luck to you Bonnie, whatever is it is you're pretending to do. I hope the books aren't complete rubbish.

I have a growing collection of interesting dice and cool pewter bits, and I wanted some sort of shadow box to contain/display them. I found this at the GoodWill in Rochester today. I think it was a typesetter's tray, with the different spacing for the more popular letters. There are letters in pencil on the undersides of the shelves (which would be the rising sides that you'd look at it if was flat on a table). Someone before me decided to use it for a shadow box, as there are alligator-teeth brackets on the bottom/now-back. It's as wide as my folding card table, which is somewhere around 30-36", and is probably 16" tall. For $6.99, it has tons of character. The bits that were taking over the horizontal space on top of the game shelves now have a more dignified home.

Here it is set up in the living room, with some of my pots in front of it, and more filled in (please ignore the dust):

Not this game (though I thrifted a copy of it not too far back) but two tubs of LEGOs, each having a 'LEGO creator' sticker on the side. Confusing.

These are big blue tubs #4120, but of course 1/2 the pieces that are supposed to be there are gone. However, there are about a bazillion OTHER LEGOs in there, including several rubber-tired vehicles, so I think I came out ahead. There seems to be most of a LEGO Soccer set, too.

$6.38 a tub at the local GW. Enough LEGOs to fill one to overflowing.

Here's a pic of one from the Interwebs; as I said, I got two tubs, both missing their lids.

Unexpected bonuses: one blue wooden block, one cheap d6, two wooden pencils, one Crayola brand fat wooden pencil with green lead, a super-size LEGO-style block, a plastic bolt that looks like it's the one from the PlaySkool Workbench, a small plastic lobster with its tail chewed off, and the receiver module for a Pelican Predator PS2 wireless controller. Now that last one I think they're going to miss.

I've been looking for nice wooden bowls to hold the stones for my Go set - these aren't them, but they'll do until I find something better.

No lids, and too light in color for my tastes, but like I said, they'll do. They're actually pretty nice. Made in Thailand, says the sticker, probably out of some rare tree they're clear cutting to make room for growing poppies.

$.88 ea. at GW. Though I only need two for Go, I bought all three since I didn't want to leave an orphan behind at that price.

They're almost exactly totally unlike these:

I've been looking for a good bike for a while now, but since I don't expect to use it a lot, I didn't want to spend a lot. So for the last year while checking out games at the thrift stores, I've been checking bikes too. They're all either in bad shape, too expensive (> $100), or not really what I'm looking for.

Last night I FINALLY found what I was looking for. It was a 1999 Schwinn Sierra in really good shape. It's a hybrid style (I have a mountain bike from 20 years ago, but it's not comfortable to ride where I'm planning to go riding). Everything seems to work properly on it (shifters/brakes) and other than some dirt/cobwebs, it's fairly clean. No rust...

After buying it from St Vincent, I went across the street to Goodwill where I saw a Diamondback that had similar parts, however was a bit newer. Their asking price: $200!!! Makes we REALLY excited that I got the bike I did for only $15! Heck, I'd have easily paid twice that and still be really happy.

EDIT: Kind of looks like this bike, but doesn't have the shock absorber on the seat...

I like records. Some of the favorites of my collection are the old Dead bootlegs that you used to be able to find at the back of head shops, particularly before the advent of CD's, (Make Believe Ballroom my most favorite - and as a recording of a '75 show with an amazing Help->Slip->Frank one of the prides of my collection also long rumored to have been put out by the band itself instead of a fly-by-night record presser - sound quality, appearance, just all of it light years ahead of many other bootlegs out there - anyways...)
So I went to a yard sale advertised as a vinyl collectors dream. Most of it was thrift store dregs, old Christmas albums, Maria Muldaur, Seals and Croft, Jim Nabors - you get the idea.
I flip through to the last box and finally find something interesting - Talking Heads: The Name of This Band is Talking Heads and Ravi Shankur: Live at Woodstock. The covers are warped, spotted, frayed corners and I look at the vinyl inside. Neither one is in their inner sleeve, instead rubbing against the cardboard cover - arrrgghhh!!! Ravi Shankur is obviously been played to death for a couple of the songs. Check out virtually any vinyl copy of Inna-Gadda-Da-Vida vs. the other side to know what I mean. Talking heads is scratched to and fro - I go to ask the guy how much he wants thinking maybe $0.50 a pop.
This is his picture:

OK I lied his eyes were blue.
Dude looks at me and says well.. all his records are mint. I think he's joking and kinda laugh - oh yea sure, I can obviously see that so how much you want for them? Meanwhile his lackey is going through the pile pulling out a mangled half of the Woodstock Album saying it was part of the Ravi record.
I stop the lackey - no I don't want that - I already have that and the rarer Woodstock 2 and the Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock AND a bootleg Dead at Woodstock.
The dude looks at me and tries to give me a run down of a brief Talking Heads history this album was the direct lead in to Stop Making Sense ect, ect, ect (The Name of this Band is Talking Heads is a compilation of live performances over a period of years while Stop Making Sense was from a three night run and there was another album released in between as well actually, not what I consider a direct lead in)
Dude then offers both for $10 as they in mint condition except for the covers of course. I look at him and my jaw kinda drops. Really? I ask. I thought you were joking - these aren't in mint, let's open them up and and take a look.
Dude then takes back Talking Heads, like he's punishing me and says he doesn't want to sell it to me.
Fine then, a mint Ravi for $6
I shake my head, Dude, these are not mint first of all IF they were, you would be taking better care of them, the records would be in their inner sleeves, the albums themselves would be in a plastic cover, furthermore if they were mint they wouldn't be all scratched and scuffed up and when you put them on an actual record player you should NOT hear the pops and hiss that so many people think is the distinctive sound of records. I quit at this point and just left as some people will just continue to believe that a fossilized piece of poo is the Hope diamond, no matter the evidence against them. He did complain loudly to his lackey that I didn't know what I was talking about as I walked away and all his records were in mint condition.
I did pick up Inna-Gadda-Da-Vida in playable condition earlier on in the day for $0.50 though.
