There's a fine line between a hobby and an obsession, but if you've converged on this list you probably fall into the latter category. That's fine. You'll get no judgments from me. Very likely your obsession drives you to sink hundreds of dollars into a particular game system, be it board game, card game, miniatures battle game, RPG, etc.

But even we obsessed, spendthrift, nerdy, non-showering (hey, I didn't judge you, so be kind) types have our limits. For instance I will make sure I shower at least once a week out of my magnanimous consideration of my fellow man (or woman as the case may be). And I also am not willing to buy absolutely EVERY expansion under the sun for even the games I love the most.

So the following is where I draw the line. Where do you?

I bought Descent recently. Played the base game once to introduce myself to the mechanics and then dove right into Road to Legend which I purchased alongside it. Within a week I had gone out and bought every single big box expansion to the vanilla game. I'm sorely tempted to buy Sea of Blood, even though I am not close to done with even one game of Road to Legend (the thought that there are additional small dungeons in that game is an attractive nuisance).

BUT...

I draw the line at purchasing the metal miniatures for Descent's lieutenants. At least for Road to Legend. Don't get me wrong, these are cool, and I look at them every time I go to the game store, but right now I have a small army of unused heroes who are aching to make guest appearances in the game, and it seems unfair to them not to use them when they can be appropriate stand-ins for the lieutenants.

I had a similar experience to Descent earlier in the year with Last Night on Earth, buying the base game and then after a few plays seizing all the box expansions.

BUT...

I draw the line at buying the promotional card/scenarios. This is not because they aren't attractive or worthwhile. They certainly look to be, so I might be persuaded eventually. But for now I don't play the game enough to justify adding even more to it, especially I haven't even scratched the surface of Survival of the Fittest.

Even with my recent splurging on Descent, I don't think it still even comes close to the money I have sunk into the Runebound system. I own all the big boxes (including a copy of the Midnight expansion that I got from a magic/tarot store that still has this powerful weird odor of incense coming off it) and all the adventure variants, market stacks, and encounter small boxes.

BUT...

I draw the line at getting the character decks. As I understand it, these are really for upping the complexity of the characters and the interaction between players, neither of which I really care about in Runebound.

I cannot say for certain, but it's a good bet that I will buy pretty much any big box Dominion expansion that comes along. The ability to merge all the components and continually discover new games (I had a strange really low-scoring one lately where my strategy involved getting all the Ironworks and Wishing Wells...and yes, I lost) is irresistible to me.

BUT...

I can't say the promo cards do all that much for me. In particular, I don't think I'd really enjoy playing the game with the Black Market as I like the restrictions on the game imposed by only having the 10 action cards available. I might be persuaded to get the Envoy and Stash at some point, and blanks are probably going to be welcome if I can ever work out what my intended addition of the "Outhouse" action card does.

Still my favorite game, so you might think I would be willing to buy anything for this. And you'd be close since I own all the big box and small box expansions as well as having created a lot of custom components and accessories for it along with my brother.

BUT...

I draw the line at getting the new plastic miniatures for it. Why? Well, because I frankly would have to get all of them if I bought any and I just cannot justify that expense considering I already have plenty of minis I use for Arkham and these are at a different scale, so they'd look odd alongside them and if I played with the original characters, I'm fine with using the cardboard characters, especially since all the monsters are cardboard too.

I own a lot of the Carcassonne expansions and if I ever get over being burned out on the game, I might get others (though I still need to really try out Abbey and Mayor fully).

BUT...

I don't really see getting the Catapult expansion. There's only so much I want to do in a Carcassonne game after all.

If it eventually starts spawning plastic minis for the uplift races, all that will change.

This is an awesome game system that has proven to be versatile enough for some wild rules tweaks to make a lot of the maps totally different experiences from the basic game.

BUT...

There is no but. I have over 60 expansion maps, and have seven more on pre-order.

The first thing that jumped to my mind was Street Fighter 2 (not the board game, but the video games). I think it took my entire adolescence for Capcom to get from SF2 to SF3. ...All they did was keep adding words. At its worst: Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix.

Good times!

I have like zero interest in any more Catan. I have the base game, seafarers and cities and knights. I also have a few of the smaller expansions and would like Das Buch, but come on. Enough is enough. The cow is dry, coughing up blood and standing on the edge of a cliff.

I am mildly interested in BattleLore, having enjoyed Memoir '44, but the high base price + 15 expansions (yes, I'm sure many are micro expansions) dissuades me. Maybe if I could find an uber set used on ebay for a reasonable price or something. Incidentally, all the M44 expansions kinda turned me off on that as well.

Can't believe I forgot this one. I enjoy Small World, though I don't play it as much as I used to. New content is something I would welcome in fact.

BUT...

Without an insert or a place to put the new races akin to the nice storage bin they gave us in the original, I don't see getting any of these expansions. I already have enough of a headache with storing and managing other games and I don't need it introduced into the one game that actually did a good job of addressing the problem.

And also I don't really want to dilute the appearance of my beloved Ratmen.

The Master Sets are a great price. But the boosters aren't, and I don't have the interest in tracking them all down, especially the OOP ones. And they've, as far as I'm concerned, the classic line. Others have invested far more, but I have almost everything up through Wave 8 -- and only had time to play this game once.

I welcome Castle Ravenloft. No prepaints, but no collecting *and* all the miniatures are 25mm scale. They'll go fine with my unpainted miniatures that I bought 30 years ago for D&D.

Much less supplements, how many *core* rulebooks is a D&D player supposed to have??? I don't even have time to play this game! I'll probably give in to temptation and buy a collection (at 33% off with my Borders coupon!) of the Core 2 Rulebooks if they put one out, but that's hopefully about it.

Okay, I'm buying the Essentials boxed set that have tokens. And I have the Base Game sets, which have the mini's and the cool tiles. And I have a set of D&D indoor tiles and D&D outdoor tiles. And I have some prepainted D&D mini's because I don't have time to play the D&D Miniatures Game either. And the Rules Compendium is cheap through Amazon.

But that's it!!! laugh
