This is a post documenting the process I went through to make my table for gaming.

I first saw The Emissary by GeekChic somewhere on BGG around the beginning of the year, and needless to say I thought it was awesome: expensive but awesome. Soon after, I found myself at PAX East where GeekChic had their own booth on the expo floor. I got to see The Emissary in person, and the need for amazing furniture was rising. Although tempting, it was still too expensive for what I was looking for.

BUT, it was on my mind. I would constantly check their website to look at the specs and the info about the table. I would google The Emissary just to see pictures and read stories of how others loved their purchase.

I finally decided that enough was enough and I decided I would try to make my own table. Surely this was setting the bar high, especially since my only background in woodworking was with the cub-scouts and their pre-fab wooden assemblies.

So the planning began...

UPDATE

After a long delay, I finally uploaded the 2D design and materials list for the table to the files section.

Game Table with removable top and recessed play area

Let me know if you have any questions.

I spent a good amount of time sketching out ideas, moving the sketches to a CAD programs, trying to learn Google Sketch, and then reverting back to my CAD drawings.

After I had all of my basic ideas set I knew that the driving feature on all dimensions would be the whiteboard to be used as the gaming table top surface.

I ordered a 4ftx6ft whiteboard from Amazon. It arrived quickly and the final measurements were right around 45inx72in.

The next step was to make the frame to separate the two table tops, and make the table look good. I did a lot of small things here and there and didn't keep up with the pictures well. So here is a quick time jump:

I built a 1x6 frame around the extra 2x3 frame from earlier. And, on top of this assembly I used some moulding to create a nice rail around the top surface of the table. The rail is used to contain the dining table top and offer an armrest when gaming. After the moulding was attached, I added a 1x3 frame inside the other frames to leave it with a nice look and offer a ledge to support the dining top.

This is a view of the underside of the 1x6 frame assembly from the inside.

So Step 2 is done. I have a functioning GAMING table, but for some reason I decided this should be used for dining as well.

I decided to use bamboo floorboards to make the dining table top. The tongue and groove really helped in assembly. The boards weren't long enough to span the width of the table, so I had to cut the boards to size.
