I have a weakness for older unloved Euros. I enjoy seeing the relatively early ideas that Euros played around with. In my opinion, some of these games were brave - offering a new idea without all the chrome or all the lovely development more recent examples of the breed usually exhibit.

So we're gonna blow the dust off some real old oddities from my collection. (Well old as in old and still a Eurogame.) I will try to list what makes the game interesting enough to have been added to my collection, and whether its ever been played, and if I still have hope of ever playing it (again).

For purposes of defining "unloved" I am restricting my list to games that carry a rank below 1000, and that have an average of less than 7.

This is a nice game kit featuring 7 small games from Reiner Knizia. They are all in the "filler" category. Some are better than others to be sure. But I've had a lot of fun with this set over the years.

For a long time I was amember of a 3-person game night. We found this kit very nice, as most of the games worked well as fillers for 3 people.

This is an abstract game where you place "stars" of hidden value onto constellations. Its a hidden information area-majority game that plays in less than an hour. Most folks have forgotten about it. I need to remember to recommend this one when we have a stray hour left some evening.

A racing simulation, which dooms it with many of my regular opponents. This game is all about fuel management, which is an angle on the racing game genre that I have not really ever seen before.

I like it, and it seems to get played every couple years or so.

What's not to like? This is one of my favorites, and I do manage to get this played sometimes.

Schrille Stille has a wooden "CD Player". How cool is that? One of the best things about this game is hamming it up with your best radio voice. The artwork is very droll.

Its been years but the game club did enjoy this back when it was new.

This is a charming game that might lead you to believe it is a children's game based on the materials. But there is some interesting game space to explore here. Each player must post wages to attract crew. Your crewmen will only serve on other player's ships. So collecting wages is all you can hope for from them. But wages paid are victory points lost. Then again, you need good crewmen to get a decent movement allowance.

Along with these considerations, you are wanting to deliver your cargo as early as possible to get the best prices.

A tremendous game that plays in an hour.

This is the second tour through my collection for Greyhounds. Our first play didn't wow anyone and I eventually let it go. But a few years later I found myself hankering to give it another try. So we played it again, but this time we played the "Bookie Game" - that was a lot of fun!

In the Bookie Game, one player has a large lead in cash, and must handicap the races, take bets (mandatory) and pay out the winner as well as all winning bets.

Asymetric fun! I really want to get the game club to give this a whirl.

Here's a game that at one time I would have thought as attractively produced. But lay it down next to some of the more modern Euros, and you'll see that the appointments are a bit drab.

An den Ufern des Nils is a game with a cool mechanism. You have to farm along the banks of the Nile. But it is going to flood, and of course the best fields are the ones that flood the most often. There are some interesting rules to regulate the ebb and flow of the Nile, and you need to manage your seed stock too.

I played this once long ago on a friend's copy. I would enjoy getting back to this one.

Rather than list more of his games separately, I'll just mention I also have a number of other Historien Spiel Galerie games. All enticing with great materials, and all "undercooked" in development.

Piranha Pedro is super silly. Players are forced to play cards that determine how Pedro will move. Eventually he will wander off the island into the piranha-infested waters. So you drop a rock onto the board to keep Pedro dry and safe. But eventually you run out of rocks and Pedro is doomed. So what you want to avoid is being the one moving Pedro when he meets his demise.

I seem to like this more than most.

Pfusch seems like an interesting idea for a game. I have not yet played it. Players are corrupt contractors constructing city works. You use polymer clay to make bricks. But you can make poor quality bricks by subbing in bricks that have a wooden cube within. An inspector is appointed each turn, who uses a toothpick to see if one of the players is using substandard materials...

We'll have to see if this gets played, but it sounds fun!

This is a game where you build the town of Palermo, then you race to collect the tokens you put down on each tile that you placed earlier. Players have a Police marker to slow their opponents. As you gather tokens, you movement ability improves, but it isn't just about going fast - its also about converting unused movement points into victory points.

So it is a thinky race with a city building pre-game. All in all a cool little game from 1992, and one I've enjoyed playing this year.
