NOTICE: Due to certain upcoming life circumstances (a baby and grad school) the header for this list will no longer be updated. I have decided to close the list since it is difficult to keep up to date without a running header. For current 2013 Kickstarter Projects please see 2013 Kickstarter Boardgame Projects. Thanks!

[NOTE: This list is for Kickstarter projects only. Please do not post items from other crowdfunding websites here, rather visit the links at the bottom of the header. Thank you]

Over the last year I've noticed several different games by small publishers use Kickstarter as a way to gauge interest and generate pre-order sales. It seems like a great way for small publishers to generate interest and sales.

I am relatively new to Kickstarter and found their search capacity for projects rather frustrating. I'm never sure if I am missing projects I might be interested in or not.

Please list here any Kickstarter projects you come across that are board games or at least board game related. This is intended to help raise awareness to the BGG community about these projects and give us a chance to jump on if we are interested.

EDIT: In order to make this list more useful to people I am asking that if you list an item, when the funding ends please update the entry to reflect whether or not the funding was achieved.

Geek Fight: The Card Game

Link = http://kck.st/zXQ2lk

THIS PROJECT WILL ONLY BE FUNDED IF AT LEAST $10,000 IS PLEDGED BY WEDNESDAY MAR 7, 2:31PM EST.

Quote:
Geek Fight is a card game that takes a closer look at real life geek fights, those little "discussions" we all have about which sci-fi franchise is better or which superhero would win in a fight. While in the real world we generally have to show some form of self control (no matter how right we know we are), in the back of your mind you are checking out your collection of perfect anime weapon replicas trying to figure out which one would do the most damage.

In Geek Fight you take your favorite geeky archetypes, put them in the arena armed with overpriced collectibles (some of which are NRFB!), and have them earn their geek cred the hard way!

The Golden Moth Illumination Deck

Link = http://kck.st/wn7yCi

THIS PROJECT WILL ONLY BE FUNDED IF AT LEAST $4,000 IS PLEDGED BY SATURDAY MAR 10, 9:49PM EST.

The Golden Moth Illumination Deck will be comprised of 68 symbolic cards illustrated by me. It can be used like a tarot deck to provide insight and awareness into a situation. The deck will be printed locally in Richmond, Virginia by Parcell Press, a printer, zine/comic distro, and supporter of independent publishing. Each card measures 2 1/8" x 3 1/4" (slightly smaller than standard playing card size), making them convenient to carry around with you. The cards will be printed in gold and blue inks on 100% recycled paper, and this first pressing of 250 will be signed and numbered by me. The deck will come complete with a guidebook that explains how to use the cards and an illustrated spread sheet to lay the cards into position.

The cards are a tool to access your subconscious mind and become alert to your thoughts, actions, and emotional patterns. Pictures are powerful. Through images, a vague thought or blustery emotion can take on form and become clear. Seeing your life’s patterns in a non-threatening way through a game-like deck of cards can be a powerful tool for transformation.

The Coffee House Games

Link = http://kck.st/xPspLP

THIS PROJECT WILL ONLY BE FUNDED IF AT LEAST $3,500 IS PLEDGED BY SUNDAY MAR 11, 1:13AM EST.

Quote:
The premise behind the Coffee House Games is simple: take some slips of paper, write different things on them, draw a few at random, and start writing. However, from there, the games each spiral out in their different directions--some require random Objects, others Themes, some even have you generate a whole Character based on the cards you draw. Some are simple and quick, others can be a bit more in-depth. Some have you write poems, others stories, and others scenes of a play.

I've put together fifteen of these games--five fiction, five poetry, and five playwiting--and I want to publish them into a book. What's more than that, I'm pairing many of the games with coffee shops around Kansas City, so on one page you'll have the instructions for the game, and on the other you'll have a brief tour of one of KC's great local cafés.

YerTurn! - The Game With Dough

Link = http://kck.st/zP5wUV

THIS PROJECT WILL ONLY BE FUNDED IF AT LEAST $6,800 IS PLEDGED BY THURSDAY MAR 15, 11:39AM EDT.

YerTurn! is a family-friendly board game created for 3 to 8 players, ages 4 and up. In YerTurn! each player, one at a time, draws a “create” card and attempts to mold the object featured on the card with modeling dough. Other players attempt to guess the object the creator is molding. The player who guessed the object and the player who created the object will advance on the board. Special “turn” cards are drawn when a player lands on a YerTurn! space; these cards include actions (double up, smash, lose a turn, etc) for use immediately or to save for later. Play consists of moving through the spaces on the board and being first to the final space! YerTurn! is great family fun and with your help, we hope to mold our dream into a reality!

Dropholes!

Link = http://kck.st/wGQx3r

THIS PROJECT WILL ONLY BE FUNDED IF AT LEAST $69,000 IS PLEDGED BY SUNDAY APR 8, 11:34PM EDT.

Dropholes! is a new traditional pub-style game. A tabletop sport suitable for the whole family. We want to bring a new classic to the market and make it available to the public. These types of games are so detailed and difficult to create new concepts for that you just don't see anything except the old classics (pool, darts, foosball, etc.) being made anymore. We want to change this. In an age dominated by electronic/virtual games, it's time for new old fashioned game.

Dropholes! is kind of like a mixture of pool, foosball and shuffleboard...but totally different. It's a good old fashioned, friendly sporting competition that combines a little hand eye coordination and skill from repetition similar in style to the old classics.

Quote:
WHAT IS IT? –
It is a dynamic and social game requiring blissfully creative nonsense, but also a keen eye and sharp ear for what’s marketable. It is both fun and challenging! You are charged with the task of selling conventional products to unconventional clientele.

HOW DO I PLAY? –
A combination of ‘What?’ card (product) and ‘Who?’ card (target audience) is picked. The goal for you (or your team) is to sell the ‘what’ to the ‘who’. For example, ‘potting soil’ needs to be sold to ‘police officers’, or ‘bath toys’ to ‘bankers’, or ‘sunscreen lotion’ to ‘NASCAR fans’…you get the idea. Summon your creative mojo to come up with a catchy idea for product title, slogan, and logo. Then pitch your best ideas to your friends. After that, sit back and listen to what others have done. Vote for the best idea presented – it may be yours, but nobody can vote for themselves. The winner of the most votes gets the $1 Million prize for that round. Play more rounds until someone reaches the ultimate goal of $5 Million.

DeepWars - Tabletop Combat in the Abyssal Depths

Link = http://kck.st/xDBtqM

THIS PROJECT WILL ONLY BE FUNDED IF AT LEAST $3,500 IS PLEDGED BY MONDAY MAR 12, 11:41PM EDT.

Quote:
DeepWars is a tabletop wargame set in an alternate history of Earth in the late 17th century, where fortune seekers and conquerors have discovered a lost land with an underground sea miles beneath the frozen surface of the southernmost continent.

DeepWars is set in the world of our existing game, ShadowSea (visit the Flash website at www.antimatter-games.com/shadowsea), but is meant to be a stand-alone product and is focused on adventure and battle scenarios on the bottom of the Sunless Sea. The game will have multiple types of scenarios, including exploration of wrecks on the seafloor, adventures in ancient cities of cyclopean structures, battles among fields of geothermal chimneys, submarine boardings among others. Adventures within flooded tunnels inside wrecked ships or crumbing cities may be played with “tiles” to represent stretches of passage and chambers, while games in open environments are played with scenic terrain pieces on the tabletop.

Some features of the game will be:

- Intense combat in the abyssal depths of the Sea. Breach submarines, uncover undersea temples, and dodge torpedoes while recovering artifacts that hold the secrets of the ethereal void.

- Combination of 28mm scale miniature tabletop wargame with campaign advancement and a role-playing flavor. Players may customize their warband with different weapons and ether technology items as they become more experienced in battle.

- Miniature starter sets for each of three main forces, Fortune Hunters, Dark Mariners, and Ancients of Atalán will be produced. Sets will include four miniatures with stat cards and quickstart rules. Other forces are included in the rules and will be made into miniatures as funds permit.

- Rulebooks will be available printed in full color or as downloadable PDFs, and will include multiple game scenarios and a painting guide. If project goals are exceeded, we will produce additional miniatures, terrain and supplements and continue growing the game.

Nature of the Beast Card Game - Prairie vs. Polar Set

Link = http://kck.st/xG1WJy

THIS PROJECT WILL ONLY BE FUNDED IF AT LEAST $10,000 IS PLEDGED BY THURSDAY MAR 15, 12:02AM EDT.

Quote:
Nature of the Beast (NotB): Prairie Vs. Polar is a card game that puts you in control of a secret animal army fighting in the shadows of humanity! You'll lead a strategic campaign to recruit enough animals to fight for your cause before your opponent can. If you are the first player to field a complete army, you win the game!

Commanding an animal army isn't as easy as it sounds. Each turn, you'll get decide where to direct your efforts. Will you recruit new animals? Move your animals to better positions in your field? Seek out advantageous locations, items and human allies? Or will you try to throw a monkey wrench (or a monkey with a wrench) into your opponent's plans by taking the fight to them?

If this wasn't hard enough, you still have to worry about all those skittish humans! They don't take too kindly to open animal warfare and will quickly put an end to your army if they perceive it as a threat!

With all of these choices each turn, NotB guarantees that you will have a satisfyingly unique game experience every time.

The Battle Box contains two pre-built decks. Each 70-card deck represents the unique animals and resources of the diverse habitats. The decks are well-balanced and competitive straight out of the box. Fell free to customize them to match your style. In fact, we're including three dozen extra cards to help you do just that.

This project will only be funded if at least $8,500 is pledged by Saturday Mar 31, 11:59pm EDT

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1291246114/gunship-first...

Quote:
Gunship: First Strike is a tactical space combat game that uses Boards, Cards and Dice together in an innovative and exciting way. Each player builds a custom Gunship, choosing Weapons and Armor placement to suit his tactics. The Objective is the total destruction of the enemy Assault Carrier. Guess what? They have the very same orders! Engage in Dogfights and Strafing Runs with your Fighter Squadron and use your Gunship's Torpedoes and Bombs to pummel the enemy Carrier (if you survive the Defense Cannon barrage!)

Your opponent has a Gunship and Fighters of his own, and will be trying his hardest to thwart your plans and destroy YOUR Carrier! Both sides will deploy a variety of armaments with individual "personalities". Blasters are the most accurate but do the least damage, while Ion Cannons cause lasting effects that slowly drive your adversary crazy! Torpedoes are a sure thing, but if "the dice are with you" when you drop a trio of Thruster Bombs, you'll do maximum damage!

Gunship: First Strike has a unique damage tracking system where you can actually watch your ship get slowly banged up and cringe as important parts get shot right off! When you take TOO much damage for comfort, or need to switch Weapons, land inside your OWN Carrier for a quick pit stop. Restore your Shields, load up on Bombs, and get back into the battle - it's going to come down to the wire and EVERY TURN COUNTS! Most battles are won by less than a handful of Hit Points.

Gunship has awesome artwork and a strong sci-fi theme. It plays very quickly and makes a great game to "kick off" a night of heavier gaming or to play in a tournament or "best 2 out of 3" style.

Heroes change the world. We need more heroes, but how can we teach heroism? The best place to start is with kids. Mainly because they're willing to change - unlike most adults.

I'm a big fan of learning through play, so I've created this deck of cards featuring heroes from around the world. When kids play with the cards, they're exposed to the attributes of heroism, examples to follow, and people to be inspired by.

These cards can be used for collecting games, trumping games, and guessing games. I've included two sets of instructions to get you started, but the fact is, every group that's used the cards has started playing their own game.

Woe to the Living - The Game of Classic Pulp Horror

Link = http://kck.st/zNL2WF

THIS PROJECT WILL ONLY BE FUNDED IF AT LEAST $1,000 IS PLEDGED BY FRIDAY MAR 16, 1:59AM EDT.

Quote:
Woe to the Living: the game of classic pulp horror melds together classic pulp era art, a traditional 52 card deck and a captivating card game all in one. No matter how they’re used, erie horror images tell the tale of the haunted and the demons they face.

In Woe to the Living YOU are the sinister spectral force striking terror into the hearts of those brave or foolish enough to stay in your sleepy seeming small-town in the heart of America. You lurk in the darkest places, making night-time strollers walk just a little faster and double-bolt their doors. You must carefully cultivate terror and watch those impacted; too much terror and they die of fright becoming useless to you. Too little terror and you starve as your prey's fear fuels rage and reckless strength, turning terror into desperate defiance!

OVER-FUNDING GOALS
(Posted on 3/25/2012 via Kickstarter Project Update #19)

Quote:
At $15,000 I will upgrade the box, cards and tiles to be linen covered. This is a high-quality material that will make for an exceedingly durable game. I think this is important as I have children and understand the stress kids can put on game components!

At $16,000 I will include the first Heads On Tails tile and the first Heads On Tails card.

At $18,000 I will include the second Heads On Tails tile and the second Heads On Tails card.

At $20,000 I will include the third Heads On Tails tile and third Heads On Tails card.

If we can exceed $20k I have more stuff waiting in the wings.

Stacket

THIS PROJECT WILL ONLY BE FUNDED IF AT LEAST $13,000 IS PLEDGED BY SATURDAY MAR 31, 5:32PM EDT.

Quote:
Stacket is a substantial wooden stacking game* with 30 unique pieces that you'll be playing right out of the box. Keep your hand on your piece and the pieces on the platform--that's it! But for those who want a challenge, trying to outmaneuver your opponent or create the tallest, craziest tower can keep you deeply involved.

Stacket has something for everybody. A group of rowdy college students was the first to join in the fun, but since then we've found that less verbal audiences--like an Alzheimer's sufferer and an autistic boy--seem to get a lot of joy from the hands-on physical balance and spatial strategy.

Day of the Dead

Link = http://kck.st/wn9QVC

THIS PROJECT WILL ONLY BE FUNDED IF AT LEAST $5,000 IS PLEDGED BY SATURDAY MAR 24, 11:59PM EDT.

Quote:
Day of the Dead is a highly strategic card game that turns you and a friend into necromancers! Summon the best team of undead fighters and in six turns you’ll be named Super Grand Master, a highly coveted and extremely descriptive title.

At the start of the game, each necromancer is given a hand containing nine cards. They represent an eccentric collection of skeletons, zombies, vampires, ghouls, and other spooks. Each turn, you select one of these weird characters and send it to the field. Once your opponent has done the same, the fun begins! All the fighters pair off and fight to the death. Normally, this sort of thing would be dangerous, but undead are durable and really get into the spirit of the thing.

Winners score points while losers are flipped face down. Undead are resilient, so losing fighters will reassemble themselves in time for next turn’s battle. But if you don’t think your losing fighter will do better next turn, you can pull him out of line and turn him into a spirit. Spirits are the ultimate fans, boosting the power of all of your fighters. Some spirits even let you replace weaker fighters!

Strategy in Day of the Dead centers around positioning; when played in the right place, any fighter can be a champion. On the other hand, even your favorite fighter can be a total failure if you are too stubborn to pull him out of a losing matchup. Stay flexible and you will bury your competition.

Stolen Child Tarot - A Limited Edition Major Arcana Deck

Link = http://kck.st/yF3906

THIS PROJECT WILL BE FUNDED ON THURSDAY MAR 8, 10:56AM EST.

Quote:
The name and inspiration for this deck came from one of my favorite poems, the Stolen Child, by William Butler Yeats -- in particular the refrain:

“Come away, O human child!

To the waters and the wild

With a faery, hand in hand,

For the world's more full of weeping than you can understand.”

To create the atmosphere of the poem, I’m designing the imagery without man-made objects like the usual tools you would see in a traditional deck -- for example, a crown could be represented by antlers, or an animal's form could represent the clothing for a human station. Also, there won’t be any adult figures. The humans in this deck are all changeling children that have embraced different parts of the natural world.
