NOTICE: Due to certain upcoming life circumstances (a baby and grad school) the header for this list will no longer be updated. I have decided to close the list since it is difficult to keep up to date without a running header. For current 2013 Kickstarter Projects please see 2013 Kickstarter Boardgame Projects. Thanks!

[NOTE: This list is for Kickstarter projects only. Please do not post items from other crowdfunding websites here, rather visit the links at the bottom of the header. Thank you]

Over the last year I've noticed several different games by small publishers use Kickstarter as a way to gauge interest and generate pre-order sales. It seems like a great way for small publishers to generate interest and sales.

I am relatively new to Kickstarter and found their search capacity for projects rather frustrating. I'm never sure if I am missing projects I might be interested in or not.

Please list here any Kickstarter projects you come across that are board games or at least board game related. This is intended to help raise awareness to the BGG community about these projects and give us a chance to jump on if we are interested.

EDIT: In order to make this list more useful to people I am asking that if you list an item, when the funding ends please update the entry to reflect whether or not the funding was achieved.

Magic Mêlée

Link = http://kck.st/Amr7O6

THIS PROJECT WILL ONLY BE FUNDED IF AT LEAST $5,000 IS PLEDGED BY THURSDAY MAR 29, 2:59PM EDT.

Quote:
Magic Mêlée™ is a new card game similar to Magic: The Gathering®, but it is not a 'trading card game'. Every match is played with the same well-designed 160-card deck (after shuffling of course). Obviously, we had to simplify things somewhat for this format. For instance, there are no land cards and mana does not have a color. The design of the cards and play-testing has been under way for over five years. The costs, abilities, power and toughness of each card have been finely balanced with the other cards so as to produce an intriguing play that is endlessly varied and sometimes quite complex.

Directors Cut Survival Horror.. The Card Game

The first set of cards is the initial deck, the first movie Zombie Hospital that we wrote for the Director’s Cut Survival Horror role-playing system. There are card sets for two more movies, and plans to release expansions of items and characters at set times during the year. The plan is to write more movies for the Director’s Cut Survival Horror role-playing system and convert them over to the collectible card game. The premise is that anyone can pick up a deck and start playing. The goal of this game is to simply survive the movie, with fewer injuries than your opponents. Each game consists of a 50-card Scene Deck, required to play the game. The Scene Deck is the movie as a whole. Each player has a deck of 50 cards that they have compiled from the available cards and one archetype card. The archetype is the character they are playing in the movie. Each deck is filled with Items, Actions, and Skills to handle the scenes as well as Wounds and other cards that affect game play and the other players. While the card game is ideal for two or even eight players, because players are playing against Scenes as well as other players, this game can be played in a solitaire fashion. The whole premise of the game is to recreate surviving a horror movie, without too many rules to learn. We used games like Uno, Skip-Bo, Munchkin, Last Night On Earth, and more to pull inspiration from. No game like this has ever been created before and we are very excited to release it to the public. We currently have a line of role-playing games bearing the same name and have released a few expansions for those and plan more in the future.

This project will only be funded if at least $2,500 is pledged by Friday Apr 13, 10:36am HST.

Who's For Dinner? The Card Game

Game = $15

Every year, the
Tribes get together for a big cookout…

…And everyone wants
to have the honor of being eaten.

Who's for Dinner? is a fast and fun take-that style card game for 3-5 players.

The Rules:

Each player controls a tribe of cannibals as they try to assemble the best combination of spices to score points when they are eaten. Additionally there are meal cards that provide bonus points if certain conditions are fulfilled:

But that's only have of the story, as a take-that game Who's for Dinner? gives you plenty of action and reaction cards that allow you to mess with other players and do sneaky things with your own cards. Most of your points come from being eaten, but a few cards even let you score points for eating other players. The expansion The Stranger and Other Delicacies adds role cards that add other scoring opportunities and provides enough additional cards that up to six players can join in the fun.

This project will only be funded if at least $2,000 is pledged by Saturday Apr 14, 5:59pm HST.

Blackwater Gulch

Link = http://kck.st/yCGUQG

THIS PROJECT WILL BE FUNDED ON SUNDAY APR 15, 10:00PM EDT.

Quote:
Blackwater Gulch is a table top hobby game where you and your friends collect small gangs of finely detailed, 28mm miniature men who will fight each other in the fierce and wild west. You will create a gang or posse based on different professions and equipment, breathing life into your men through the skirmishes they win or lose in the town streets and outskirts.

The game is named after the fictional town of Blackwater Gulch, located “somewhere out west”. It’s around 1890 and a gold rush has brought fortune-seekers to town after a local discovery made nationwide news. This also brought a population boom and the town has become overcrowded with unsavory sorts, and not enough lawmen to go around.

Your gang is living in these troubling times. They can be lawmen or outlaws, vigilantes or freedom fighters. You decide who they are, what they can do and why they do it. Adventure awaits in Blackwater Gulch! Keep your six-guns by your side, and an eye on your back. You’ll never know who’s coming down the road...

Edo: Tokyo 1603 - 1868

Link = http://kck.st/GBBDhb

THIS PROJECT WILL ONLY BE FUNDED IF AT LEAST $10,000 IS PLEDGED BY MONDAY APR 23, 11:59PM EDT.

Quote:
In Edo, players represent daimyo in mid-second millennium Japan who are trying to serve their shogun by using their samurai to construct castles, markets and houses in Tokyo and surrounding areas. At the start of Edo – which won "best evening-length game" in the 2010 Hippodice Game Design competition under the name Altiplano – each player has five samurai tokens, seven houses, one market and three square action cards, each of which has four possible actions on it.

Each turn, the players simultaneously choose which actions they want to take with their three cards and in which order, programming those actions on their player cards. Players then take actions in turn order, moving samurai on the board as needed in order to complete actions (to the forest for wood, the rice fields for rice, cities to build, and so on).

Building in cities costs resources and gives you points as well as money; as more players build in a city, the funds are split among all present, with those first in the city receiving a larger share. Players can also receive points or buy stone by dealing with a traveling merchant, whose offerings change from turn to turn.

Once at least one player has twelve points, the game finishes at the end of the round, with players scoring endgame bonuses for money in hand and other things. The player with the most points wins.

A Las Barricadas

Link = http://kck.st/GNHJfU

THIS PROJECT WILL ONLY BE FUNDED IF AT LEAST $3,500 IS PLEDGED BY MONDAY MAY 7, 7:41PM EDT.

Quote:
A Las Barricadas is a boardgame about conflict between two opposing social forces, namely that of the state and of anti-authoritarian demonstrators. It is a two-player game with each player representing one of these social forces, the theatre of this conflict being that of the street demonstration. It is being developed and designed by the Black Flag Games collective, committed to the idea that games and interactive media can have an impact in the struggle for a free and cooperative world. We are also committed to the ideals of free culture and aim to deliver professional play experiences that enrich a participatory entertainment culture.

A Las Barricadas is designed to simulate the spontaneity and unpredictability of demonstrations and direct actions. It has been carefully crafted not only to be entertaining but also to aid in the honing of our collective tactical mind, much the way a war game might sharpen the strategic capacity of its players. The game is a contest between two participants, one playing the forces of the state and law enforcement, and the other playing radical anti-authoritarian demonstrators. The Police player has consistency and physical might on their side, while the Radical player has the capacity to rapidly become overwhelming if played well, and is better able to dictate the tone of the conflict. Each player has a plethora of strategic options available to them, and variable objectives keeps the game fresh each time its played.

Rithmomachia: Battle of the Numbers - The Philosopher's Game

Link = http://kck.st/H7eV2o

THIS PROJECT WILL ONLY BE FUNDED IF AT LEAST $3,750 IS PLEDGED BY FRIDAY APR 27, 8:36PM EDT.

Quote:
Rithmomachia is an early European strategic board game based on the mathematic harmony principles of Anicius Manlius Severinus Boëthius. Little is known of the origin of the game with certainty, but it is assumed to have originated around 1030. It was played by monks and scholars as a teaching aid and for amusement in the courts or Europe, leading to its epithet "The Philosopher's Game".

Modern commenters on the game have played up the math aspects and complexity of the game - some of this confusion may stem from the wide ranging, error filled and fragmented nature of the surviving documentation on the game. The introduction of chess to Europe and new mathematical principles coming in vogue relegated the game to a historical footnote. In recent years however, a resurgence of interest has proven that it is in fact a very elegant and fluid game.

Chess fans, students of math and history, strategy and board gamers, and Society of Creative Anachronism enthusiasts may enjoy this game!

These cards have ship stats printed on them so that everything that happens during a battle can be tracked directly on the card with a dry erase pen. These cards are moved around the table like a miniature and everything is recorded directly on them. Battles between a few ships can be played in a couple of minutes or massive fleet battles can be played in about an hour.

This is an expansion to Imperial Crusade Armada that adds two more factions to the Imperial Crusade universe. It is also a stand alone game that does not require Imperial Crusade Armada to play. The Freetrade Coalition uses drone fighters and mines to destroy their enemies. The Outland Alliance uses powerful gunships to assault enemy ships and their force manipulators to disrupt their opponent's plans.

You may be familiar with our very silly card game "We Didn't Playtest This at All". It is silly, quick, and fun. We have an interesting idea on how to expand it: designing a version of Playtest that benefits from you writing on the cards! Of course, this is a new and unusual idea, so we need to raise funds to make it happen. By supporting this Kickstarter Campaign, you'll be helping us bring our new card game to you, our adoring fans If we raise enough funds, maybe we'll be able to do a huge print run!

SMILING SAM THE GAME

Link = http://kck.st/Hw9yJd

THIS PROJECT WILL ONLY BE FUNDED IF AT LEAST $8,000 IS PLEDGED BY TUESDAY MAY 29, 12:00PM EDT.

Quote:
SMILING SAM THE GAME is a board game used to teach counting coins. It's fun to play. My students love to play it. They ASK to play SMILING SAM THE GAME.Players travel the board with rolls of dice, learning the value of colored tokens as they go. A unique feature of this game is that token values are learned as players land on Smiling Sam's space. Sam reveals the value of one color at a time. My students know that should they be collecting low value tokens throughout the game they may decide to continue to collect the lowest value possible "to set the LOW record." You see, a high dollar value wins "High Score" and a low total will be credited with "Low Total". I have built in positive rewards and kept negatives to a minimum. Even "Lost A Turn" is made a positive because by losing a turn students learn values as they see others landing on Smiling Sam.

MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) Board Game

Link = http://kck.st/HqcPXG

THIS PROJECT WILL ONLY BE FUNDED IF AT LEAST $12,000 IS PLEDGED BY SUNDAY APR 29, 6:19PM EDT.

Quote:
The World's First MMA Board Game was designed with a passion for the sport of MMA in mind. Our professional designers and illustrators took the time to make sure our MMA game was both fun and educational. Many months were spent with pro-MMA fighters trying to create the perfect game that would include the stand-up game and ground game that we see in the sport of MMA today. The game is fast paced, realistic and exciting to play with everyone in the family. Mixed martial arts is the fastest growing sport in the world and we designed the game play to keep up with this ever evolving sport. This MMA game is as close to the "REAL" play of MMA that a board game can get without incorporating too much strategy and without injury. This allows people with no knowledge of MMA to still be able to play with an equal chance to win against people who might know the sport. Our working prototypes have been proven to be a huge hit with both pro athletes and non-athletes, both males and females, as well as with children as young as 5 years of age.

Garden Dice

Link = http://kck.st/HTaCaN

THIS PROJECT WILL ONLY BE FUNDED IF AT LEAST $10,000 IS PLEDGED BY THURSDAY MAY 3, 7:30AM EDT.

Quote:
Garden Dice is a dice-rolling, tile-laying, and set collection board game for 2 to 4 players, ages 10 and up. Players take turns rolling dice to buy, plant, water, and harvest five different vegetables with differing point values. The board shows a garden on a 6x6 grid where players place their tiles using dice rolls as coordinates. Four special tiles give players additional options and create new game dynamics. At the end of the game, bonus points are awarded for collecting sets of tiles, and the player with the most points after all tiles have been played is the winner.

Garden Dice uses simple rules, but involves a surprising amount of strategy. The more you play, the more nuances you will discover. Even the most seasoned gamers will find something new in Garden Dice.
