Occasionally we all see a thread or post pop up from a user who is seeking ways to earn some Geek Gold for [Insert Reason Here]. Depending on our mood, you may feel sorry for them, be annoyed by what you may perceive as begging or you may just be indifferent.

This wiki page explains things; GeekGold, but I thought I'd give a little more detail. Also chances are if a user isn't aware of GeekGold, they aren't aware of the wiki either.

Often examples of how can be earned are given and occasionally some tips are thrown in. Now I'm not offering free GeekGold here. But I'm attempting to catalog how a person might use The Geek to earn themselves a virtual ton of Geek Gold should they be so inclined. As it turns out there are lots of ways to earn Geek Gold.

Ultimately there is no short cut to getting lots of Geek Gold. Well no scrupulous one that I'm aware of. Chances are unless your willing to "buy" your GeekGold it will take quite a bit of work to earn the fortune you seek. Sound familiar? Along the way you may even add value to The Geek which you can be proud of.

In each entry you will see "Earned Through -" and either "EFFORT" or "PURCHASE". This differentiates whether you earn the Geek Gold by your own hard work, or by spending money/offering items of value respectively.

I should mention these aren't in any real order, But I have attempted to group similar items together.

SESSION REPORTS

Earned Through - EFFORT

Earnings = 1 - 5 per Report approved for entry

A Session Report is a thread entry in which a user recounts a game session, play through, or other gaming event in detail so their fellow users can read about how the game plays, rules have been interpreted, possibly gauge level of fun, etc. A good Session Report will detail not only what occurred but how you felt and what other players said during the session.

The payment for a Session Report varies based on how much value your fellow Geek members felt the Report added. Each user reviewing your Report prior to entry may vote to award up to 5 . The person submitting the Report receives an average of the all the votes if their Report is not disapproved for lack of value. So the more effort put into the Report will most often garner more gold in return.

THREADS (Optional)

Earned Through - EFFORT

Earnings = 1 - 5 per Thread approved for entry

Any Thread you create has the option to be evaluated by your fellow users should you think the submission is that good. This means your entry will first be evaluated by users acting as Mods before it sees the light of day on The Geek.

The payment for a Thread you choose to have evaluated varies based on how much value your fellow Geek members felt the thread added. Each user reviewing your Thread prior to entry may vote to award up to 5 . The person submitting the Thread receives an average of all the votes if their Thread is not disapproved for lack of value. So the more effort put into the Thread will most often garner more gold in return.

Warning: If your Thread is not approved it will be lost. If you then choose to just add it without sending through the value process you'll have to recreate it.

REVIEWS

Earned Through - EFFORT

Earnings = 1 - 5 per report approved for entry

A Review is a thread entry in which a user evaluates a game or game item. So their fellow users can read about what you thought and hopefully judge if it is for them or not. A good Review will detail your experiences and thoughts about the item in question. Some of the more popular Reviews include pictures embedded in the body of the Review, but this is not required. In addition some reviewers will compare the item reviewed to other similar items.

The payment for a Review varies based on how much value your fellow Geek members felt the Review added. Each user reviewing your Review prior to entry may vote to award up to 5 . The person submitting the Review receives an average of the all the votes if their Review is not disapproved for lack of value. So the more effort put into the Review will most often garner more gold in return.

CORRECTIONS

Earned Through - EFFORT

Earnings = 0.25 - 3 per Correction submitted

A Correction is something any user can do by going to any entry and clicking the "Corrections" link in the right hand menu. Users can then add, remove, or change the information in the database for the item. You know the release date is wrong? Make a Correction. Is the number of players allowed wrong? The publisher name misspelled? Is the item known by an alternative name? Submit a correction.

All corrections must be reviewed by a Geek Admin prior to the change being made. But the Admin has the ability to reward your efforts for making a correction. In most cases I have earned 0.25 for a correction. But if I make a lot of corrections or a single correction requires a lot of changes, I have occasionally earned up to 3 for submitting them. The reward given is really subjective based on the value determined by the Admin reviewing the correction. And they can deny corrections they determine unwarranted.

Use care submitting corrections. These should only be submitted for things which you know for sure are incorrect. Usually due to owning the item and seeing the information, or by being a subject matter expert with the correct knowledge.

MODDING

Earned Through - EFFORT

Earnings = 0.01 - 0.05 per item modded with the majority

Modding is the ability to review many items which have been submitted for approval. These items are anything which requires approval but are not directly approved by an Admin. These items are approved by us the community. Before Modding you should familiarize yourself with the guidelines for submission for each item you want to Mod.

Payment for Modding varies. If you Mod an item for approval, you will get 0.01 if the item is approved. If you Mod an item for denial you will get 0.05 if the item is denied. If the item receives the opposite of what you Modded, you will get nothing. This may seem like a pittance, but you can potentially Mod thousands of items over the course of a year netting you a decent payout. I often will spend a few minutes a day Modding things. I haven't calculated my totals, but I'm sure I've earned a significant amount over time.

Modding is a responsibility and should be taken as such. Simply clicking on approve / disapprove without any thought serves no one any value. Understand what your looking at and evaluate it fairly according to the guidelines. The people submitting the data deserve a fair evaluation.

Note: During modding you may occasionally be able to give feedback, approve and thumb items or award Geek Gold depending on the item modded. Take advantage of these options while Modding. Believe me, it is greatly appreciated.

UPLOAD IMAGES

Earned Through - EFFORT

Earnings = 1 per Image accepted for upload

The "cliché" and most common answer given to people seeking Geek Gold. Users may upload pictures of games and gaming related things to entries on The Geek. Whether you add them to a Board Game, RPG Item, Video Game, Series, Family, Person, Publisher, etc. etc.

Any Images you upload and which are accepted by our fellow users will be added to the database and you will receive 1 whole .

Though many consider this a quick and easy way to earn Geek Gold, I caution against just submitting Images for the sake of earning virtual currency. Images submitted should add value to the site. Cluttering up the database with frivolous Images really helps no one. Take a moment to find entries which have no Images or only a few and could use some quality image love. There are a ton of opportunities for this available out there.

AUCTIONS

Earned Through - PURCHASE

Earnings = Varies per item(s) auctioned off

In the Bazaar users may choose to offer items up for auction. This particular type of auction only allows other users to bid on your offering. Works like any general auction. Highest bidder who meets reserve, (if any), wins. Often shipping is paid for with additional .

I should mention many users will offer cash for in the auctions. Most commonly they will offer $10.00US for your bids, but offers from $5 to $25 pop up occasionally. If you don't have games to offer but want to buy this may be an option.

This quote is from Nov 28th 2010

Currently US$10 via paypal gets you around 150 geekgold. If you have a fairly mediocre job that gets you $10/hour, that is 150 geekgold per hour. To compete with that in the various other methods, you would have to:

- format and write a high-quality review or session report once every two minutes (150/hour @ 5 GG apiece = 30/hour = 30/60 minutes = 1 every 2 minutes). Assuming you get 5 GG each time, of course.
- take photos, crop, tweak them in an editor, resize, then upload them at a rate of 2.5 every minute (150/hour @ 1 GG apiece = 150/hour = 150/60 minutes = 2.5/minute).
- mod, click "decline," and have everyone agree with you at a rate of 1 per second (150/hour @ 0.5 GG per decline = 300 per hour).

And so on. Only modding comes close, and then only if you work at a low-paying (by US standards) job, and only if you are thoughtlessly abusing the system and not carefully considering your mod duties, and neither are a bunch of other people.

This can also be a place to spend your after you've become flush with the stuff.

LINK VIDEOS

Earned Through - EFFORT

Earnings = 1 per Video accepted for upload

Not so well known yet, Videos can be linked to database items. Any Video submitted should relate, and add value, to the item in question. Don't have time to write a detailed session report? Use a video camera to record your session and then post the highlights here.

Any Videos you link and which are accepted by our fellow users will be added to the database and you will receive 1 whole .

This is a newer feature, and it is discouraged to sift through the internet for videos to link. Videos submitted should be your own creation. If you know of a video which exists out there that is just too good not to have attached to the item in the database, give the original creator some time to attach it themselves. Possibly even contact them and ask them to submit it or if they are cool with you submitting it.

DONATIONS

Earned Through - PURCHASE

Earnings = Varies depending on amount donated

At anytime you are free to donate money to The Geek to help keep the website properly funded. For each US Dollar donated you will receive 1 . In addition, for larger donations, you can earn a "Patron" badge or choose to eliminate ads for a while.

Donations are in no way required and are pretty much the least economical way to earn , but it is probably the quickest way of getting the gold into your account. The GeekGold is awarded automatically by the system, and if you run into any problems contact a Geek Admin.

LOTTERIES

Earned Through - PURCHASE

Earnings = Varies per item(s) offered up

Last year a novel idea has taken hold and has now become a small passion for some. The Games for Geekgold Subscription list allow users to offer up games, RPGs and video games for lottery. Other users "buy" entries by tipping the person offering the game and at a predetermined time, the lottery ends and the game is awarded to a random tipper.

First, you need to be willing to take a risk. it is entirely possible a game you offer goes for only 1 to some lucky, (or maybe unlucky), person. But depending on your offering the potential to earn thousands of for a single item exists. What you get fluctuates greatly on many factors, not the least of which is what else is currently up for lottery.

Warning: Participating in the lotteries as a "ticket buyer" can be quite a drain on your . If you're trying desperately to earn a few, you may want to avoid the lotteries until you have a small war chest to play with.

Another guild offering for your hard work is Adminions. Adminions attempts to organize and motivate users to complete large or cumbersome tasks in order to make The Geek the best online game site ever. Users can pick up torches laid out by others to assist in completion of projects. Or they can begin their own projects and request assistance.

One of the largest projects they are trying to tackle is improving descriptions of games which have very poor descriptions. Assisting this guild can earn you up to 10 for a single item updated.

WORK FOR IT

Earnings = Varies based on what you offer to others

Be creative and offer your services to others for . There are lots of things you can do to entice others to give you Geek gold without begging. You can offer to thumb items, spread good cheer, be an online personal assistant, etc. Just be sure not to offer anything which breaks the guidelines of The Geek.

Offering to become a personal billboard for anyone willing to purchase your avatar or GeekBadge. Or to thumb other user's submissions. (Many system awarded microbadges are dependent on a minimum number of thumbs items receive. You can help them earn these microbadges faster.) Are a couple examples of ways to possibly earn some .

You are relying on other users to give you this GeekGold and as such will be paid whatever you negotiate with them or they feel is fair.

SUBMITTING DATA

Earned Through - EFFORT

Earnings = 2 - 5 per entry accepted

The very core of The Geek is the data available regarding games, Board, Video, Role-play. If you enter a new game you can earn anywhere from 2 to 5 for the entry. Any entry made should be for a game you own or have direct access to for information purposes. You really shouldn't be entering information about a game you heard about, or read about on the internet.

In addition to entering the game, you may enter a version of a game which is already in the database. If you own a game and know it is a different version, (release on VGG), of what is already posted on The Geek, you can create a new version and include the differences your version has. A version entry will gain you 1 . Again when entering a version it should be for a product you own or have direct access to.

Finally, you can enter people, (Designers, Artists, & Production Staff), and publishers, (Companies), into the database and earn up to 1 for each entry. These are reviewed by Admins and gold is awarded by the Admin as well.

GeekGold awarded this way is done so by Admins. The Admin evaluates the data submitted and awards accordingly. Most often I have earned 3 per game entry but have gotten more or less usually depending on the level of work required to enter the item.

UPLOAD FILES

Earned Through - EFFORT

Earnings = 1 or more per File accepted for upload

Under each item entry on The Geek is a section for uploading files. A File can be one of many forms of uploaded data. A PDF, Word Doc, Exel File, Power Point, etc. etc. Presumably the File your uploading contains information or data relevant to the item your uploading it to. Some of the more common file types include; Box Content Checklists, Variant Rules, Rules Summary/Reference Documents, User Created Scenarios, etc.

All Files are reviewed by an Admin before approval and may be disallowed depending on content. I strongly suggest you do not use copyrighted material in the creation of your File. Occasionally users might use a game's logo or background coloring to liven up their submission, but this can cause issues and might very well result in your file being disapproved.

Another section on each game page is the E-bay Listings. By using this section you can add Listings to show up on the page. By doing so you won't earn any GeekGold immediately but anytime another user clicks on the Listing you added you get 0.01 up to a max of 0.05.

Certainly doesn't appear to be a windfall of , but judicious adding of Listings across many items can potentially earn you a respectable amount of gold. Just use care in doing this. Make sure the Listings you add relate to the game in question.

GIFTS/AWARDS/BOUNTIES/BONUSES

Earned Through - EFFORT

Earnings = Varies based on user offering

Much more common than one might think, flush users on The Geek often announce their desire to award, give away or to pay out amounts of GeekGold to other users who meet certain criteria. It might be a generous gift to new users. Possibly a bounty for people uploading images for rare games, Could be an award for the first user to complete a certain task or assist with a problem. Or even a bonus from Geek Admins, (usually around the holidays). But in order to take advantage you'll have to watch for threads or Geeklists to pop up announcing these not so uncommon events.

These offerings will generally offer an opportunity to earn 5 to 10 but have been known to offer as much as 100+ for a single event.

BEGGING

Earned Through - EFFORT

Earnings = Varies depending on the generosity of others

Though frowned upon by many, the truth is a user can earn some by simply asking for it. The Geek is filled with generous souls willing to part with a little of their hard earned GeekGold to those who simply ask.

I wouldn't recommend doing this a lot. Also, if you do accept some handouts, I do recommend remembering the generosity of others when you have lots of yourself. Giving back to the community is never a bad thing.
