No really. I'm done for the year. I swear.

Flashback. December 20009. I don't even remember what I was looking for specifically but I stumble upon a little site called BoardGameGeek.com and am intrigued by the huge number of interesting looking games that I found there, almost none of which I'd ever heard of. The only exposure I had had to these types of games was a single play of Settlers of Catan about 10 years earlier with some friends of mine that owned the game. I found to be extremely fun, but they lived in another city, we were just visiting, and I've since largely lost touch with them, so I never played it again.
After reading though the numerous games and clever lists that I found there, including this one: That is illogical captain! - Logical inconsistencies in otherwise fine games. I still had no idea what most of those games were, but that list sure made me laugh. So I read up a bit on some of these games, pick a few that I think will work with my wife, and I look around the net for the cheapest place to get them. I come across a nice online store called Coolstuffinc.com where I decide to put in an order. The very first game I crack open and try with my wife is Dominion and we're instantly hooked.
I look around for local game groups and find 3 different groups that I've played with at least once each and even make it to Gen Con for a day to get some games in there. I proceed to make almost monthly additions to my rapidly expanding game library and now one year later, I swear I'm done buying games for this year.
I've been making it to a game group for a weekend day at least once every couple of months. In the mean time, despite having 3 small kids, my wife and I manage to get a game or two in at least one evening a week. While we initially were trying as many of these great new games as possible, around mid-summer we decided to let some of the new games idle on the shelf while we replayed games we already knew to get better at them.
So below are the list of games I've managed to acquire in my first year in the hobby.

I'm really looking forward to getting this on the table as the theme and mechanics appeal to me, but the length is a barrier. Sadly, still unplayed.

We really like this. A good combination of tile laying game. Dirk has come in second in one of our games, leading him to now be referred to as Stupid Dirk.

Unplayed. It looks interesting though and as such it could only lead to one inevitable action down the road...(See Roma)

I was really looking forward to getting this game and then disappointed by the production quality when I got it. It was then that I realized what a component snob I've become in less than a year. This is what it must be like when you win the lottery and suddenly Two-Buck Chuck is no longer good enough to drink. I'm still intrigued by the game but it's still unplayed.

Played several games of this with my nephews who are 7 and 10. It was easily their favorite game that I introduced to them. After that experience, I became convinced that this will be the game that I will definitely be playing with my son when he gets older. Which leads to the Memoir 44 buying spree that was to come.

We really like San Juan, so of course we need Puerto Rico. Plus my wife likes the physical act of punching out pieces and this one has a lot. So it has that going for it as well.
Unplayed.

The first game where I bought it purely for the theme despite mediocre reviews. I mean, I like sushi. My wife likes sushi. Surely, we would love a game about making sushi. I got the game. The components are beautiful. And then I read through the rules and now I'm not sure I like sushi anymore. I mean, it's just fish. And raw at that. Hopefully the game's not as dry as it looks, but it remains unplayed.

I'm not sure what prompted me to get this when we had already played Pandemic and liked it quite a lot. But it was cheap and to that end I would say this is one of the best values for a new game. I'll probably use it first with my kids before moving them onto Pandemic. The wife and I will play this if we want something a little shorter than Pandemic, but truth be told, if you have one, you really don't need the other.

So having decided that Memoir '44 works well with boys and fully expecting to be playing this with my son when he gets older, I decide to buy a boatload of expansions. In typical style, I haven't played even the base game again since ordering all these expansions. What's that old saying about having more money than intelligence?

If you get the European expansions, you have to get the Pacific expansions as well. I wouldn't want to be accused of being a racist and exclusionary.

This looks like a lot of fun so I picked it up as well. It supposed to work with 2. I hear it's a deduction game of sorts although I honestly have no idea how that actually works.
Also unplayed.

Given that I've played Agricola once and I've got Loyang which sits unplayed, it was imperative that I get Le Havre as well. It too has lots of chits to punch so I'm sure my wife will enjoy that. Clearly, I'm good at coming up with reasons to buy a game.

I had been looking forward to this reprint for a long time after liking TTR:Europe but finding the board to be too open for 2 player. I got this and was not disappointed in how much better it plays for two. It's amazing how much difference the map makes. Highly recommended.

Of course you need the expansion to the game you love that you've played once. Of course you do.

I've sort of played a few turns of it and really found the game to be engaging. It's a game that really is dependent on the people playing it, and I can see how if you play it a few times with the same people, it might be difficult to come up with new phrases for the same picture, but it's the most original party-type game I've seen in awhile.

Obviously the expansion must come with it. I've used these cards with the 4-year-olds where I lay out 6-8 cards and come up with a phrase. They guess which picture it is. That went over pretty well. I'm trying to get them to tell me stories from the pictures but some of the pictures are so bizarro I think it confuses them which is also entertaining. Confusing my kids is a favorite pastime of mine.

I liked the idea of infecting people with the Black Death and so I picked this game up. When it comes down to it, I'm not sure I understand why a game about massive death is so appealing. It's like saying I'm looking forward to Concentration Camp: The Board Game. Nevertheless, this game was only okay for our one play. The core idea seems like it should work, but it seemed like there was not enough confrontation with just two players. The board is restricted with two, so there's less places to go, but I quickly got all of my cubes on the board, and I'm not sure there was much that my wife could have done about it. Hopefully, that was an anomaly.

This is how bad it's gotten. I don't even remember ordering this game. It just showed up on my shelf one day. Either my games are spawning themselves or I'm going into some sort of game-buying fugue. Thankfully, it's supposed to be good. At least my games are spawning decent games and I'm not ending up with multiple copies of SongBurst on my shelf.

For some reason, even though I've got like 20 games for two players that haven't hit the table yet, I went on a hunt for more two player games and ended up getting this. Make that 21 games.

Since Zooloretto didn't work out as well as I had hoped, I thought another zoo-themed game should do the trick. The rules look better, and the box is smaller so it takes up less shelf space. So thus far based off of zero plays, I would vote O Zoo le Mio better than Zooloretto.

So knowing I haven't played M44 since I got the Mediterranean and Pacific expansion, it only makes sense that I get the Campaign Book to string together scenarios into one long campaign.

Game purchases during my first year as a board game geek

This mirrors my experience almost exactly (except for the screwing up of rules part -- never happens in my house). To combat this, we've implemented a three-play minimum rule for new games: once it finally makes it to the table, we play the game at least three times (personally, I'd prefer a few more plays, but my wife is always eager to get back to those games she loves). It's helped us get through that initial rules-learning stage and to the point where we can start to enjoy the game as it's supposed to be played.

Yes I am. Yes I am.
And I'm lucky to have a husband who doesn't moan when I buy art supplies that don't get used... We all have our obsessions.
I've gone for a 3-5 play for all games before a new purchase, except for currently owned party games - their play rate is just a bit too arbitrary to be determining a new order!
Radioactive man, you might want to find a new store, I'm sure you don't need to buy as many as you do to get free shipping!
I can appreciate the sentiment though, I start with 1 game I'm dying to have, then to balance out the shipping to NZ, it's a case of hmmmm ok that looks good, yeah might as well throw that in.... it wasnt too bad at the start as there were lots of great well tried and tested games to get, now the pickings are getting slimmer
