[POLLS] Most Anticipated Games of 2011 - VOTING IS CLOSED.

Last year's 20 Most Anticipated Games of 2010 was a fantastic experience for me personally as I discovered a number of games that I don't think I would have otherwise.

Sure, BGN has their Gone Cardboard page (sadly, it is currently offline). But, the enthusiastic and glowing expectations of you, my fellow geeks, turned my attention to several games that I don't think I would have otherwise noticed.

So, in that spirit I would like to once again open nominations for this very in-formal and un-official contest to determine the 20 Most Anticipated Games of 2011.

Nomination Status Updates:
The nomination lists are quite long, so I have posted them in separate threads here:

Sorted alphabetically: http://boardgamegeek.com/article/5981851

Sorted by nomination votes: http://boardgamegeek.com/article/5981919

Key Dates:
Nominations Open: Thursday, December 16, 2010
Nominations Close: Wednesday, January 5, 2011
Voting Begins: Thursday, January 6, 2011
Voting Ends: Thursday, January 20, 2011

Subcategories:
Subcategories may be changed based on the nominations, but tentatively these are the subcategories I expect us to have:
* Train
* Economic
* Historical
* Political
* Horror
* Science Fiction
* Fantasy
* Wargames
* Expansions
* Print & Play
* Abstract

Eligibility
Any newly available game or expansion is eligible if it is anticipated to ship in 2011. Whether it will actually ship in 2011 is another matter.

Reprints vs. new editions
Reprints of already released games are not eligible, but new editions are. As with many things in the gaming industry this isn't a crisp line as to how many changes are necessary to distinguish a reprint from a new edition, but several factors to consider are artwork and components.

When nominating a new edition, mention why you think this one is different from the previous edition (not necessarily in detail, something as short as "new components" is sufficient).

Long out-of-print reprints
I would prefer to include games that have been generally unavailable for several years and are receiving a reprint. Again, this is a bit of a fuzzy area, but as an example, if Warhammer Quest or Hero Quest were to be reprinted without changes they would be eligible.

Multiple releases
It is not uncommon for a game printing to have multiple release editions for the EU and US markets (such as Mayfair/Lookout Games and JKLM/Z-Man). Many games are released and available at Essen and then (sometimes much later) released in the US with great anticipation.

For many, I think the "buzz" surrounding an Essen release combined with the general unavailability heightens the anticipation.

I would prefer to include these releases and let the voting determine how anticipant people are.

Limited initial release
I would also prefer to include games that had a limited initial release and are preparing for a full re-release. Again, this will be a grey area, but one example I would point to is the approach that Treefrog, Winsome, GMT and other publishers take with typically small pre-order releases that sell out quickly and receive a reprint if they perceive that the game was well received.

What is a small or limited release? Again, another gray area that we'll have to deal with as it comes up, as I'm sure a small release for Hasbro is quite different for a small release from most publishers here on BoardGameGeek.

This would also include games that might have had reviewer copies released, but are not yet generally available for purchase.

Nominations
To nominate a game add it to this geeklist. Please add a short note stating why it is anticipated that the game will ship in 2011.

Nomination name
Nominations may not have a BGG entry yet, or you may want to change the nomination name to indicate a specific edition.

To do so, put the nomination name inside of altname tags such as:
[altname]Favorite game - Unnamed expansion[/altname]

To second a nomination thumb its entry.

The top 50 nominations will be entered into the final vote for the top 20.

Voting
At the conclusion of nominations I will create a poll with the top 50 nominations.

Other
If the particular game is part of a series (such as the Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game) I may combine multiple nominations into one entry for final voting if it appears as if the series is anticipated rather than a specific release in the series (this was done for the Dominion expansions in 2010).

Also, if there isn't any justification for why a particular game is anticipated to ship in 2011 I may removed it from final voting. This only reason I state this is to separate anticipated 2011 releases from wishlist items. Yes, it would be nice if Hasbro/Avalon Hill reprinted Star Wars: The Queen's Gambit or Merchant of Venus but at this point I don't believe there is any reason to anticipate their release in 2011.

However, in this respect I would prefer to be inclusive rather than exclusive.

Anything else??? We'll wing it...

And, surprisingly it looks like Toy Vault is releasing their edition for the US Spring 2011.

Medieval Mastery is among one of the first games to be released by Chaos Publishing in 2011.

We haven't got a definitive date in mind but you can expect its release to be near the start of Q2 with preoders open before then. Also, to note, each of the first print runs are going to be released in a limited quantity and will exclusively be sold on our website.

Personally, as the game's designer and as one of the company's directors, I'm very excited about its release and would like to know you all are too - a lot of work has been put into this project so far and I really hope you pick-up and enjoy playing our games in the near future.

Currently our first two games are undergoing their final stages of playtesting; you can stay updated our progress and get involved at our thread in the Board Game Design forum.

Happy holidays,
Miles

Has completed the P500 with MMP, art just about finished, just waiting on a production slot, I understand. Also, MMP seems to ship P500 completed games about nine to twelve months after they make it.

Reprint, but both out of print and getting a huge shiny new art upgrade.

Souvlaki Wars is the first owned game by the largest greek boardgame company, Kaissa Chess and Games. In the game players are greek restaurant owners competing to attract more customers and gain money and fame.

The game will be released in the first months of 2011 and it will be a bilingual edition with both greek and english. The illustration is really top notch and so far all the playtesters have been more than enthousiastic about it!

By the way, one side effect of the game is that whoever plays it, gets very hungry during the course of it and then wants to order souvlaki and gyros!

The game was originally a limited print release by designer Daniel Quodbach and simulates the ancient contest of Kairn - the ancestor of curling.

It will be re-released in an English version and renamed Caveman Curling - here is a comment by one of the new publishers:

Quote:
What is great about Kairn (and what made us publish this one) is the fact that there is a tactical dimension in a skill game: so even if you're the best at aiming, you can still win! It is rare that a game can combine this 2 aspects of gaming so well. And the rules are super simple: 45 seconds to explain!

A game made of stars. Players try to put the zodiac circle in order along with the ruling planets and houses of the signs. with the help of the meridian and horizon's movements on the board. Players can win extra moves during their round, or make their opponents lose moves.

An easy, competitive game. Cards with planetary alignments and alignments of houses, help you gain extra points, while creating row of cards with the proper signs, planets, houses and elements might grant you victory at the endgame.

From the designer of Inca Empire.

Z-Man just released Issue 25 of their newsletter today (http://www.zmangames.com/news.htm).

On page 9 is an article about Palenque.

From the article:
"Palenque is an area control game. Players use
randomly drawn cards to influence the assorted kingdoms across the board. Action points are used to place control markers in different areas of the Yucatan Penninsula.
Having the greatest number of markers in a kingdom
when a scoring card appears will score the most points."

Hmmm... Issue 25 of Z-Mans newsletter (http://www.zmangames.com/news.htm) lists a "Scorched Earth" in the 2011 "No Date Set" column.

Could it be this one??? The BGG entry lists one of the designers is fellow BGGer Morgan Dontanville... designer of another Z-Man title, Spectral Rails.

Mad Maxish theme, but one of the funniest descriptions I've seen:
"The game is designed for the Eurogamer to win by delivering cargo most efficiently and the Ameritrasher to win by blasting them to hell."

Sounds like my kinda game.

It looks like Z-Man is going to release this one.

Issue 25 of their newsletter (http://www.zmangames.com/news.htm) has it in the 2011 "No Date Set" column.
