I see a lot of strange user names here and some are quite obvious, so I though, why not tell people where did you get your user name.

Sorry, if this has done before.

If it is, then new users have a chance now to tell us again.

Ok, this one is pretty dorky.

Back in 1990 or thereabouts, I joined Narnia MUSH. While there were a bunch of delightfully mock-anachronistic characters present, the nominal timeframe was after the return of the Dawn Treader. I wanted a canonical character, but only a minor one: Rynelf is mentioned a couple times in VotDT, and manages a single significant line:

"Begging your Majesty's pardon," said Rynelf from the deck below, "but if one of us did the same it would be called deserting."

so he seemed a fine choice. Since that point, I've used the name in a bunch of other online places.

So I came up with the name...gamermommom

Finally, I shouted into the phone on the call center floor: "Christian like the religion, Spear like the weapon!"

Needless to say, all of my friends on the floor laughed loudly and the name stuck

So... There was a little lull in the "goth" music scene between Sisters of Mercy and Marilyn Manson... during that time I was in High School, and dressed quite goth-y.

It was also right at the internet boom, you know, the REALLY big one a couple years after yahoo, right when hotmail started.

So... I got all dressed up, nice and pretty for school (I as literally the only guy in this small town to wear lipstick and fishnets). My dad looked at me and mumbled ".... more like casper the goth" because I tend to have a more friendly personality.

So, it was that day that I stopped using bocfan (for Blue Oyster Cult) and started using casperthegoth... everywhere...

I don't seem to have any competition either, at this point. At least no where that I have been. Every casperthegoth is me. I feel kinda lucky to have something semi-straight forward that has lasted for years.

actually mine has a bit of a story behind it...
it dates back to when I got introduced to mIRC back in college. i started logging in with my last name (Kumer) and then my friend told me that's not the way to go and to get myself a nickname.
so i sat down one evening, took a paper and pencil and started thinking. and as usually when i give something enough thinking time something good comes out of that.
i had three goals
1. it had to be short
2. it had to include at least one English letter (x,y,q)
3. it had to mean something else in Croatian

and after a while BAM - Kex
it's short, it includes x and when spoken it sounds like "cookie" or "biscuit" in Croatian

mission accomplished

Amongst my many jobs, I used to DJ regularly around Manchester in many and various clubs, mainly indie and rock stuff with a bit of dance-y wonderfulness chucked in for good measure. I ended up supporting a few bands at live gigs, one of whom were the rather awesome Idlewild. One poster promoting the show was ripe for modification, and a friend drunkenly scrawled the band's name out and scribbled "michael" over it in thick black pen. Unfortunately they only covered the 'wild' bit, and so "idlemichael" was born. Used it pretty much ever since!

I started using Lig as a username in online games, as its quick to type & say, and easy to spell, but some sites needed minimum of 6 letters for a username, so having just read Terry Pratchet's Good Omens, There is a Character called Ligur, so I added the extra "g" for the minium requirement.

What you would hear if you were travelling down the Mississippi on a steam powered paddle boat in the 19th century...

My favorite modern artists in this style:

John Balch

Mary Z Cox

My user name, like most on here, came from early attempts to find something suitable for usage in online gaming. Of course, I wanted my name to be associated with the norse god Thor. Shame that, because a lot of geeks online probably had the same idea. So came the parody - Thaw, the norse god of turkey defrosting...

There have been several variations - for example my ebay handle is Thaw1000.

However, after getting into (and forming) a hardcore punk band in the late 90's early 00's, I saw a lot of the Straight Edge Bands placing and X on either side of their band names. And so xthawx was born, a username seen not only on the geek, but on Xbox Live, Steam and so on...

Well, my generally-accepted username used to be fermented, not, funnily enough, because I liked beer (I didn't, and also I was like 12 or 13 at the time) but because I liked the word and I used it as a sort of symbol for oddness. (Don't question my adolescent nonsense!) As the internet became an actual popular thing, though, it became a tough one to come by. Then, in one of the numerous math books I'd read, I came across an amusing piece of cryptological trivial, namely that the word "cold" run through a 3 letter Caesar cipher became another word, "frog". I grabbed it and ran! It's still not that easy to come by, but most of the time I'm fine.

My moniker here is based on two pieces. The ending of course is simply a shortening of my last name PFEIFFER to FIFE because my name is pronounced FIFER.

The first part is based on a nickname that I was given at work. FUZZY ZOELLER was a very good golfer who had a habit of whistling as a method of releaving pressure when he was playing. I never noticed that I also did the same thing, and although I am not a very good golfer (12 hdcp at the time) I also whistled during our company league matches. One of my friends Bill Hogan was the "give nicknames to everyone" person in our league. He decided I would be "FUZZY" and it stuck for a very long time. So along with "Boo, Darby Dog, Lucky, Farquar, Otis, Mush, Boomer and a number of others that I probably forgot FUZZY became the name that I responded to. My wife even calls me that sometimes, and many but not all of my friends do the same.

Going through the text of it, I found the word 'Scayra' - the planet on which the story is settled. If 'BadAss the Great' is too small, why not taking an entire planet as nick. And there it is, my nick, my humble servant in now many different forums, my hero in 'Guild Wars',... and many other 'useful' tasks. And... glad to say: my nick in this great community
