I see a lot of strange user names here and some are quite obvious, so I though, why not tell people where did you get your user name.

Sorry, if this has done before.

If it is, then new users have a chance now to tell us again.

It was in 2001 when I first used internet. My friend showed me some places on the internet and how things worked. Then he showed me e-mail as well and told me, that I need a user name.
Everything I tried, was taken, even "postiljonbmx", so I was thinking and thinking and saw a recycle bin on the desktop. Then I just added my calling name Raix (comes from Raiko) at the ends, creating a binraix username.
From that time I have always used this username or my real name.

Few months later Osama Bin Laden became world famous (911), so my name has nothing to do with him.

Mine is so boring... as you can see, my last name is Brichs. So, my username is Brichs. I find it distinctive enough, as there's only 15 people in Denmark whio share my last name. There appears to be a bunch of people in spain/portugal named Brichs, but I have no idea if there's any connection.

I've not had a problem with Brichs yet.

I do have a couple of other nicknames I go by,when playing RPG games. My go-to names for female characters (often an archer-type)are Amira/Ameera (which I made up when creating a character in Lord of the Rings Online). Apparently, it means "princess" in Arabic, so that name I'm having trouble getting that name some places.

My go-to name for male sorcerers is Molik. My first RPG character was a male ice-mage named Molik, who half the time failed his spells. That name kind of stuck

Back before I liked having money, I used to play Warhammer. In high school I had a sizable dwarf army. In the fantasy version of Warhammer, the generals could be made super powerful, almost to the point of making the rest of the army unnecessary (I've heard they have since changed the rules). My general could almost take down an apposing army single handedly, but if he died I was screwed. I named my general Drazkor. Not sure how I came up with it, but I did, and it stuck. Now I'll use it here and there because I cannot come up with a better name.

My username comes mainly from my parents, but partly from the bgg system, by way of some US stranger.

When creating my bgg account, I simply tried using my name SteveK.

Computer said "no" - it was already in use, and suggested "SteveK2". I thought - "yeak, OK, I can always change it later".

Well, of course, I later found out we can't (normally) change usernames.

The original "SteveK" created an account one day in March 2003, and hasn't been back since.

My real name is Rick, and I really dig indie games - indie in the sense of experimental, boundary-pushing, playful - so that's why I've got the name IndyRick.

Folk know me as Pete though because there are a lot of Ricks, Richards, and Dicks - haha - on the UK convention circuit, so I had to choose another name to stave off confusion - and Pete was the first name that came to mind.

Cheers

It was the late 90's and multi-play computer games were popular. LAN parties were all the rage, and I joined more than a few with some buddies.

And I was bad. Horribly, horribly bad at them.

For these, invariably you needed a name to identify yourself in the game. I chose a variety of handles, all with a common theme. "Fresh Meat", "Easy Kill", "Dead Meat", "Kenny" ...you get the idea. Eventually, I settled on just plain "Meat", for the trail of bodies (my own) left laying around the map as I died, over and over.

I kept the name as I became competent. Later, a bunch of buddies formed a Quake II Capture the Flag clan (go Defective Gummi Bears!) and I needed a permanent name. Being used to "Meat" in my LAN games, I stuck with it, using it on our CTF league's forums. Ever since, I've tried to use "Meat", or a variation thereof, when joining a new on-line community.

20+ years ago, I started playing Rotiserrie baseball on a long forgotten community known as Compuserve (which may or may not still be around). I was a participant in one of the first leagues over on Compuserve, the league's name was Gehrig. One of the owners was a gentleman by the name of Jan Person.

During the course of the 1990 season, I happened to get the reputation as a wheeler-dealer. I was a trade making maniac. I finally managed to make a trade that involved the procurement of a young hitter by the name of Frank Thomas (aka, The Big Hurt). I got him for a song. At the time, I was neck and neck with the aforementioned Jan Person near the top of the Gehrig league. Jan made a rather large fuss, claiming that I had "scammed" the other owner of Frank Thomas. He didn't relent. Calling me a "scammer" at every opportunity. The other owners weren't nearly as peeved with the trades, but dug the name.

The name stuck. I have been Scammer on the net ever since.

The Back Alley gets no respect.
mbmbmbmbmb
Back in 1978, I had to choose a userID for the university mainframe. The rules weren't all that flexible, so you had five or six letters to work with. I ended up with three IDs: DRCOX, DRCOX1, and RANCOX, all from my real name.

Well, DRCOX1 was just silly and DRCOX made everyone think I was a professor, not realizing that D and R are both initials.

The one I liked, and was even called in person from time to time, was RANCOX. So it stuck for the four, five, or eight years I was in school. But that ended and there still was no true internet.

Finally, this Internet thingie got going strong and I had to come up with a name. By this time, I could use spaces and such, so I chose as my internet "handle" my real name--Randy Cox. Easier to remember and doesn't do that whole head game thing where people come up with "personas" and such.

Interestingly, the two names I have, David and Randy, had their heyday in the year of my birth and have fallen out of favor a good bit since.

When changing ISPs in 2001 I asked the tech person I was speaking with on the phone if the username snowman was taken. He responded that I could have it. In retrospect I should have thought it was unusual that it was free.

When I got my confirmation information from @home, I found that my username was snowman882. I thought it was funny that there were 881 other snowmans already in use.

It took me several years before the lightbulb went off...

snowman882 = snowman followed by two snowmen...

snowman8 and snowman88 must have already been taken....

Mine's another fairly boring one - I just chopped two letters off my last name (Woelfel).

Because of the slightly unusual spelling of "wolf" I've been able to use it as-is at the majority of websites and forums I've been to, although there have been a handful where it was already taken or was blocked because it was too short or something. In those cases, I'd just tack on some arbitrary number at the end like 37, 42, or whatever popped into mind at that moment.

As this list has been done before (albeit more than 4 years ago), and being as lazy as I am this time of the year, I'll just quote what I posted back then:

Quote:
Mine has a large story behind it. Back in the high school days (12 years ago if we're talking about my last high school year) I used to be some kind of a party animal, so people started calling me "baco", which is the spanish version of Bacchus.

When I first created a public account (I don't remember where, but my guess is ICQ), and while still being a party animal, albeit a lesser one, I used the nickname "Bacchus"; however, seeing as to just how many "Bacchus" there were, I changed it to "Bacus", which is how "Bacchus" sounds in spanish. No one else shared that nickname.

Fast forward several years, and I tried to use my "Bacus" nickname while creating a Yahoo! account. Unfortunatelly, it seems I had already done that, but I dodn't remember my password, and in order to recover it I had to write a hand-written letter and send it to the US via certified mail. It was obvious that a new choice was far easier, so I added the "God" part at the end.

I've abandoned my party animal habits long ago, but I still use "Bacusgod" everywhere...

PS (and EDIT): I forgot. When I stated "12 years ago" it should now read 17 years ago... I guess I'm really getting old!

Also, it's no longer true that I use "bacusgod" as my nick almost everywhere. I now use the way easier "afpabon" (as in my first and middle name initals, and my full last name), but I'm still known as "bacusgod" in sites I registered a long time ago (I've been registered in BGG since 2002).

I've used Rabid as a username since way back when I played Half-Life online on the PC. The name suited the game and I've stuck with it ever since.

Just for the record, I am not and never have been infected with the Rabies virus.laugh
