We have all seen the geeklist of the super-pimped games. They might have expertly painted minis or fancy wooden additions or even scratch redesigns. This is not that geeklist.

This geeklist is about the little things you did to make a game better. Making text a little more readable, swapping out pawns, or improving it in a very small - and perhaps easy - way.

Please add your own micro-pimps.

Peer Sylvester suggested a small jade elephant (he used one in his prototype) to keep track of the next start player. I found this brass elephant at a garage sale! Has a wonderful heft.

I had 300 clay poker chips lying around unused that had a dice border around their edges. So I thought it was perfect to upgrade this dice rolling game! I elected to use only one color of chip rather than 9 different colors for a couple reasons. First, buying 9 different colors in packs of 25 chips would cost around $55 USD plus shipping. I would only need 4-6 chips per color so I couldn't justify this amount of scratch on a $20 game. Second, the rules state that your money is face down and hidden from other players. Having different colored chips would require the use of screens to prevent opponents from calculating your earnings. So I decided to go with one color of chip.

I bought label sheets from spielmateriel.de that had 24mm round labels, which just happened to be the exact dimensions of the center of the chips that I had! Each sheet was only 0,55 EUR and had 70 labels per sheet. I used pixlr to create a solid black label for all the backs of the chips, and color matched labels with denominations.

Finally, I used the large Dealer chip to replace the start player card, and added a draw bag to pull the chips randomly according to the rules.

For those interested, I have actually compiled my own Geeklist to document my pimps if you would like to stop by and say hi: The Enchanted Bunny Micro Pimps

A few of my inspirations have come from this list, so thank you Cate for maintaining this one! laugh

I found a small 1/64 scaled Yatming Ford F1 on ebay to replace the cardboard marker. Fits well on the board and is just about the right size for the 28mm pieces. Then one day I decided to attack it with some brown paint and ink wash.

On a "moderate-pimp" level, you can see I also bought another set of hero minis to zombify them. Thought it was lame that a zombie hero only has a cardboard chit that you're supposed to slide under its base. These fellas convey the theme much better.

This is kind of a macro-pimp in size but micro-pimp in terms of cost/effort.

In case your zombies want to go the mall, Electronic Mall Madness is the right size. Electronic Mall Madness shows up often in thrift stores. The first version is the best - tan buildings and the stairs are the correct size for the minis

From Micheals and from a hobby/model railroad store, I found cheap barricades, plastic potted plants, and a fountain in the right scale for this game,

OK, perhaps this does not add a lot visually or thematically (droplets of blood? bloody footprints leading away from the crime?), but my clue markers are a heck of a lot easier to see than the transparent tiddly-winks that came with the game!

These little plastic rings, used to identify a particular key in the dark, are easy to find at the key duplication area of your local hardware store. However, they they may ask (as mine did) why I wanted a dozen in a single color.

I laminated one of Jacks Tracking Sheets. We use a red dry-wipe pen to record any info'. It saves us tearing out and trashing sheets of used up Tracker notes:

The excess laminate surround underneath the four tabs was carefully cropped close to the sheet itself, to allow it to nestle in perfectly.

I then re-designed the sheet in colour:

The Clue Tokens were impossibly hard to find before, due to their contact lens style appearance.

Blue (police coloured) stickers in the centre of each of the tokens makes them easily distinguishable.

As do Ring Binder Strengtheners, which for the most part also allow you to see through to the numbers on the board.

The game comes with 4 cards to use as trackers, but they proved a bit fiddly, so I made a board and some nice tokens. Then I needed a pad to keep score on (I did consider putting a score track around the board, but decided against it in the end). Finally I need a box to put it all in.

I have a spare parts copy lying around.

Seeing as there hasn't been much call for spare tiles over the years, I decided to make myself a tile holder out of four tiles.

Even more recently, I've made a second Tile Holder, and sandwiched them both together side by side.

Now I have a Draw and Discard holder.

I played Love Letter at our local group but the theme didn't work for me. Then I tried Loot Letter and it made all the difference and I bought a copy. I found I felt the wooden loot tokens were unsubstantial and started looking at craft stores to find a beads or something that could replaced them.

At a local bead shop, All About Beads, which also sells boardgames(go figure)I found what I was looking for beads that are gold, with markings and a bit a heft to them.

Then I was on a search for a plastic container to carry the cards around in. It had to have a positive latching feature and be big enough to hold two decks as I plan to use the Big Love Letter expansion so I can play with up to 8 people. I found the the case at a local Dollar Tree store. Two cases for $1.

Over the last few months, my fiancée and I have really started playing our games more regularly. Thanks to this, my crafty wife-to-be is always looking for opportunities to improve their components.
After just the first play, I knew those little, wooden "shells" in Maori were much too bland for her to tolerate for long. So, she found some replacements at our local Michael's, and we're much happier with the new look!
I'm not sure what we're going to do with the old ones, but I'm always hesitant to throw bits away... ninja

The French version of this non-language dependent game is as beautiful as the American version is ugly. But their gorgeous little ship markers are not easily distinguishable by color as they're a bit too artsy. Easily fixed with homemade colored stickers for the ships' clear bases.

I also glued gems on top of the fiddly markers which are constantly moved. Use a clear-drying adhesive. I used colored gems, which could be used alone as what's printed on the original doesn't matter.

I attached the noblemen to colored poker chips with a nice heft to them. Don't use plastic chips.

I mail the stickers out free. Once I matched the colors and found the sticker paper it seemed silly to make just one set. I had a circle punch the exact right size.
