Welcome to my invisible geeklist!

Occasionally, I'll get an idea for a geeklist without really getting an idea for a geeklist.

Well, this is one of those times. I've wanted to do an invisible geeklist for a good long while now, but couldn't come up with a topic. Then it hit me.

The topic is:
“Things you hate to see in a game”

If you want to add to the list, you can make your entry invisible by putting this around the text.
[ color=#F4F4FF] [ /color] (without the spaces).

Edit: #DDDDFF is the color for quote boxes. Thanks Aramis.

Shapes that don't have obvious names
(I made the invisible letters big so you can read them.)

This game has two shapes that I want to call Stars. The only way I can differentiate them is by calling them “The Star” and “The Other Star”.

Maybe, I just need to brush up on geometry, but I don't think repeating 8th grade (again) should be a pre-requisite for playing a board game.

According to the instructions of the original Qwirkle, the four-pointed ones are crisscrosses, and the others are starbursts.

I never read the instructions. It's much easier to just post invisible rants on BGG until someone corrects me.

BTW: I think that's the designer's husband who said they call them Circle, Square, Diamond, Clover, X and Star.

I've gotta be more careful when I complain about games on BGG.

Thanks. I love the game, by the way. It's my youngest daughter's favorite game. Now that I know what to call the shapes, I just need to figure out how to beat my daughter.

Small Fancy Fonts

I don't want to have to wear my glasses to play your game.

Well, actually, it's gotten to the point where I have to wear my glasses to play almost anything, but there's no reason for you to rub it in.

This game is the worst culprit, because after putting on my glasses and holding the card up to the light, I usually find that it was just flavor text and I didn't have to read it at all unless I want to know that “Luther Martin never speaks without trying the patience of all who hear him.” Hey, that's My specialty!

Shadow Hunters is the worst. I can't believe I forgot about it.
The color contrast along with the font give my gaming group all sort of trouble, but those hermit cards would be convoluted even with good text.

Thanks for the quote color, Aramis.

Halflings

I just don't like Halflings.

I know it'll kill what little geek cred I have, but I don't really like Hobbits, either.

I have no good reason for disliking them. I just think they're over-rated.

If I had hairy feet (and for all you know, I do), I'd wear some shoes.

Or maybe get a wax.

Actually, Kender are a specific type of halfling. They're listed in the AD&D2E PHBR9: The Complete Book of Gnomes & Halflings.

They're a weird version of halflings, but they ARE halflings.

The D4

Calling this a die in an insult to all the other upstanding dice in the world.

It doesn't roll well and it just looks silly. Not only that, but it's potentially dangerous. It's always got a pokey end pointing up.

If I ever pass out on the game table, I just hope there's not a D4 there, waiting for me. In the mean time, I'll be wearing my safety glasses, just in case.

5 or 6 = 1

7 or 10 = 3
2,3,4,11,12 = 4

Very intuitive!

See also Guatemala Cafe, which has black, blackish-reddish brown, brown-ish red, tan, and white stickers on neutral wood pieces... and the sticker colors do not match the actual wood stain colors of the black, blackish-reddish brown, brown-ish red, tan, or white wooden pieces.

Or see Container, which has brownish orange and orangeish brown, along with black, white, and tan. Not only that, it has blue-greenish white and whiteish blue-green for two of the boat colors, and blackish blue to match the blueish grey player mat. Truly a disgrace to colors everywhere.

Rules that don't include a goal

This has been a pet peeve of mine for years. I hate when the rulebook tells me "The goal of the game is to have fun" or something retarded like that. I'm sorry, but if your game is good enough I'm going to have fun without being told to, so let's get to the point. How does someone win?!

Even worse are games like the Great Dalmuti where there is no overall reason to play the game. You can't win or lose, you're just playing to play. So you could still be playing 3 months later and no one has won, because you can't win! Dumb, dumb, dumb.

[ color=#F4F4FF] I don't have my copy of Dalmuti at hand, but isn't it clearly stated that the goal is to get rid of all your cards first, and thus be named Great Dalmuti for the next round (and further privileges, like choosing the chair, telling the slave to replenish the drink and food, etc?

Furthermore, for n players, the first to play all his cards gets n-1 points, the second n-2 points, etc. After m rounds, the guy with the most points wins. At least that's how we play, but I thought that was in the booklet.

There is most definitely a winning condition, but it is a closely guarded secret and those of us in the know take great pains to keep it that way.

Alas, it doesn't matter, as you are henceforth banished from playing this fine game.

The Great Dalmuti

Mr. Dalmuti,

If the winning condition is as invisible as this geeklist, it's still just as annoying. And banishing me from playing the Great Dalmuti is like banishing a convict from prison. I am so excited to be free of the chains of this pointless game.

Thanks warden,
Blott

Mr. Lott,

There is most definitely a winning condition, but it is a closely guarded secret and those of us in the know take great pains to keep it that way.

Alas, it doesn't matter, as you are henceforth banished from playing this fine game.

Cheers,

The Great Dalmuti

Dear Mr. Lott,

There shall be merchant trading, effective immediately. Please send any and all grievances to the Lesser Dalmuti.

That is all,

When we walk our dogs, I consider myself the winner if I clean up the least poop.

I get bonus points, if I'm out of the house when the cat throws up.

Garry Kasparov as my opponent in an abstract strategy game with no randomness, which he's spent decades devoting his life to in order to get good at it (whereas I've had better things to do with my time, like play New Super Mario Bros. Wii and solve logic puzzles from Japan), while a masked figure tells me that I must win the game in order to live, and if I lose, I get crucified, and if I draw, I get killed quickly and painlessly. Wouldn't you hate to see that, too?
