As I sit here at work, taking a break from cranking out Q1 financial reports, I'm thinking about how I'd rather be spending the day playing board games. The conditions couldn't be much better. I need to use some vacation time soon, it's raining, my wife is home today, and we even have a friend staying with us for a few days.

If you could play a game instead of being at work, which one would you choose? To make things interesting, let's say you could only choose one game, and you'd have to play it for the equivalent of a typical work day - 8 hours. (Obviously, you can play the game more than once.)

When I played in Austin, we could get in a game in 3-4 hours. I haven't played a game that took longer than 4 hours in years.

If all players have played a few time then the game is quick. Take out the paper money and it's smoother.

Yes, hypothetically, there are probably better choices - but, in practice, this is is the only board-game that I've actually spent 6-8 hours playing in one day. Come to think of it, I've had several such days... usually it had to do with us wanting to keep playing until we actually figured out how an apparently weaker side could win in a particular match-up.

Heck, I've already done it with Maria - our first game, I taught it and played a game. Immediately afterward everyone wants to play again, a bit of role-switching and was really happy to play again (even if I also lost again).

Everything?
As a long time CCG player and other game player it seemed to me that if your deck worked and hit the curve of creature cost it worked great. If not you would lose.
Not saying some wouldn't like it... as you obviously do. But there are many many other games i would rather play.

Edit:

I might even be able to have a decent competition with this one if we played it twice! With rules explanation taking so long, and never seeming to be able to get the same players twice, this one is definitely the one I would pick. Plus it's almost like work!

My regular sessions are limited to 4-5 hours. It would be nice to play e.g. 1830 or some other game comfortably without having to worry about whether we'll have time to finish, or have to rush into moves without thinking about the consequences.

Edit: I don't mind massively which particular game, because I have only played a few titles.

This game offers great variety between plays and numerous strategies to victory points. 8 hours would be 3-4 plays, which if all games were with the same set of 3-4 players, sounds like a ton of fun. It would be interesting to see how everyone would try to combat each other with each successive game and what buildings would or would not be built.

8 hrs = 2-4 games of Arkham (and if it were only 2 there'd still be an hour or so left, so we'd push it longer to get in a 3rd game).
We try to do this at least once a month - set aside a Saturday, Sunday or Friday to play this all day.
With the re-release of CotDP and the release of Arkham Horror: Miskatonic Horror Expansion, we'll probably try to fit in another few days a month of Arkhamathon.

I actually see myself playing Arkham for several playthroughs close to eight hours when I come home from work and my kid and wife has gone to bed. Many late hours into the nigtht and back to work the day after...really nice way to disconnect and think about something completely different when trying to save the world from all the potential horrors brought by the AO.

Anyways for 7 weeks straight I was averaging about 8 hours a day of Heroscape - GOOD TIMES I tell you. It was awesome and I would do it again in a heart beat.

I would rather work for 8 hours (versus the 14-16 a day I do now), but games would be much much better.

I'm seriously contemplating hosting a 24 hour BBQ, Booze & Boardgame Bonanza. 8 hours just seems...lazy.

i do at least two 12-16 hour games days a month.
But a 24 hour one sounds epic.

In january I did a 32 hour (including 3 hours of sleep) gaming weekend with some friends. We mainly played Descent RtL - Do I need to say that it was awesome?

This list reminded me of a perfect strip from Penny Arcade, where a guy wins a reality show to work as a playtester for a big videogame company:

I am clearly a wimp. There is no game I'd want to play for 8 hours. I'd get bored and burn out on it and wouldn;t want to play it again for a really long time. I am pretty careful about overplaying my games and so tend to keep a good mix going of what I'm currently playing. Plus I like different genres.

I'd love to be able to play games all day long once in a while, but they'd be different games so I could savor and enjoy each one. I might play a couple back to back, but that'd be it.
