There's a few folks here who have already earned over 100,000 thumbs. Some have done so by being regular participants in the Spread the Love thread, but like others I've had to earn my thumbs the old fashioned way - by contributions. I joined BGG in April 2005, and now in May 2011 I've finally arrived at the milestone of 100,000 thumbs, the equivalent of 20 Golden Meeples, and 1 Platinum Meeple.

mb Platinum Meeple ("I have 100000 thumbs")

This list is a self-indulgent retrospective at what have been some of my more popular contributions - they are a reflection of how BGG is a community, and I have always enjoyed sharing different aspects of the hobby with my fellow gamers, who share a love for games along with me. I consider it a snapshot look at my time on BGG, and figure it will be interesting for me to look back on in a year or two from now.

Of my 100,000 thumbs received, most have been acquired in three main areas that reflect the bulk of my contributions:

26,000+ thumbs - Images
26,000+ thumbs - GeekLists & Items
38,000+ thumbs - Threads & Replies

Finally, don't miss the photo caption contest (with GG prizes) I've posted to help celebrate this milestone!

I love taking photos of games, and trying to improve the game galleries. Once in a while I'll get a more artistic shot, but for the most part most of my photos - about 10,000 in all - are attempts to help make the database complete and useful so that there are clear images of different game components.

Does anyone else think its funny that despite the fact that Ender takes the majority of his pictures for the above stated reason, his most popular images, with the exception of the En Garde image, do not showcase components?

Yes, ironic isn't it? Even though clear and straight-forward images of game components are very useful and arguably the main reason for the BGG image galleries in the first place, they often get little or no thumbs. The most popular images on BGG are usually the artsy, amusing, or out-of-the-ordinary pictures of cats in game boxes and the like, and contributing those kinds of more creative shots isn't exactly my specialty. I am guilty of thumbing the good ones that others contribute though!

I only need a couple pictures of the components to get a good idea of what comes in the box, but I always enjoy pictures of people having a great time playing games. That's one of the main reasons I love this hobby.

Ender's Reviews

mb [Most Popular] [Most Recent]

It was when I began incorporating my own pictures in reviews that I found my niche in the "Comprehensive Pictorial Overview" genre. My pictorial review of Dominion got the attention of publishers, and as a result I've even been fortunate to receive review copies of numerous games from time to time. Given the time I invest in a review, for the most part I only post reviews for games I'm enthusiastic about. My children have also helped me review a number of games, by means of interviews I conducted with them. Some of their remarks - quoted as they said them - are hilarious! I've posted almost 150 reviews, and that makes me part of the circle of Golden Thumb reviewers.

Most thumbed Reviews:

622 thumbsup A Comprehensive Pictorial Overview: So you're wondering about the game with 500 cards that everyone is talking about... (Dominion)

Really wonderful, and such a showcase for BGG. Somewhere along the line I realized that the reason I (used to) go to game stores--especially unfamiliar ones in cities I visited--was the hope of SEEING a game I'd only heard about before. Sure, I picked it up and could feel the heft of the box, but the real additional information came from seeing the cover, reading the copy on the back, hopefully seeing an inset photo back there of the game's components, all set up.

That was back in the 80s-90s. Along came the web, and then later came affordable digital cameras. Still it took some time for photos of games to be easy to track down. Now BGG makes it sooooo easy, and I just love it. BGG is as much a photo database for me to browse as it is a community and repository of written opinions.

Thanks for these wonderful pictorial overviews!

I and a friend both pre-ordered this game after reading early reports and thinking that it had the promise of being something special. We were among the first to have it in our hands when it hit North America. After playing it intensively for a few days, Dominion became the subject of one of my first ever comprehensive pictorial reviews - this in turn went on to be one of the most thumbed reviews of all time on BGG, and helped draw the attention of publishers to my reviews, so I'm personally indebted to the game as well!

When I first wrote this review, nearly four years after the game was released, Glory to Rome was languishing in relative obscurity. It's since gone on to enter the BGG Top 100, and I'd like to think that this review helped bring this great game to the attention of some people who otherwise might not have heard of it. It's a fantastic card game, and I'm only too glad that others have come to discover and enjoy it as well.

I was quite confident that this game would make a splash after getting hold of a copy shortly after it was published. Matt Leacock was in the hotness as a result of the success of Pandemic, and an innovative approach to dice-rolling along with a civilization theme was a guaranteed recipe for success. This review is currently #5 on the list of all-time most popular reviews on BGG.

Block war games were completely new territory to me when I learned this game. I know that there is real interest in introductory block war games from eurogamers wanting to dip their feet in the waters of war gaming, so I decided to make this particular review function just as much a tutorial as a review, so that other complete newbies like me could join me on the journey of entering this strange new world for the first time.

Ender's Session Reports

mb [Most Popular] [Most Recent]

In addition to some miscellaneous session reports that I had fun writing, I've written several pictorial illustrations of gameplay, which effectively gives you a visual walk-through of a turn or two of a game to explain how it works. The Masked Mask series wasn't for everyone, but if you can look past his ugliness, you will find some fun game stories, some of which won Mozart Awards as part of John-Paul Pizzica's Excellence in Session Report Writing Awards. I'm currently at around 80 session reports, so it's one microbadge that I haven't quite reached gold with yet.

Most thumbed Session Reports:

127 thumbsup Pictorial Illustration of Game-play: A sample turn of Carl Chudyk's innovative new civilization-themed card game (Innovation)
106 thumbsup A pictorial report of our first game: the adventures of a man and two children, in their valiant quest to defend the king's city (Defenders of the Realm)
98 thumbsup Pictorial Illustration of Game-play: A sample turn as a weakened King Henry VI fights desperately to save London! (Richard III)
97 thumbsup Pictorial Illustration of Game-play: A sample game of 2 de Mayo (2 de Mayo)
95 thumbsup Extreme Scrabble: Taking Scrabble to where it's never been taken before! (Scrabble)
94 thumbsup A pictorial report of my first ever block war game: a man and his 13 year-old son take a thrilling ride back to medieval England (Richard III)
69 thumbsup The perils of serving Haggis for a date-night on Valentine's Day: an eyewitness report (Haggis)
66 thumbsup Pictorial Illustration of Game-play: Let's learn how to play Haggis! (Haggis)
58 thumbsup Pictorial Illustration of Game-play: Some sample plays from an innovative two-player trick-taking game (Triumvirate)
57 thumbsup Reverse Stratego: playing blind and backwards - two 9 year olds invent their own variant (Stratego)

Carl Chudyk's Glory to Rome was a huge hit, so there was every reason to expect good things of his follow-up card game, Innovation. Given that the game does have a few novel concepts and innovative mechanics, I figured it would be helpful to create a simple play example of a turn, to illustrate the basic concepts of the game. So with the help of my camera and photo editing software, I created a pictorial illustration of game-play, illustrating a sample round of a three player game of Innovation.

It's not easy figuring out how a block war game works if you've never played one before. To help illustrate how Richard III works, especially for gamers not familiar with block war games, I figured I'd provide other folks on BGG a pictorial illustration of the game-play, with the intent of showing how the game works and giving a sense of the flow of play. In this game Lancaster's Henry VI was king in London, but his position was vulnerable as a result of the advancing Yorkish armies along with their mercenaries. What will happen next? Read the report to find out!

The rule book contains an example of play, to illustrate how the game of 2 de Mayo works. However, since the example is mostly text, it can be difficult to follow, and the first edition also contained a couple of minor errors. I reconstructed, corrected, and edited the example, and added pictures to provide loyal readers of BGG a pictorial illustration of the game-play. The aim is to help you follow along with the example of play, and get a sense of how the game works. It's a great asymmetrical cat-and-mouse game in the style of Scotland Yard, depicting the historical conflict between the Spanish and French in Madrid on May 2, 1808.

Ender's Favourite Games

These are lists of some of my favourite games, categorized by type and arranged by BGG weight. I mainly use them as a handy reference to help select a game from my collection that will be suitable for who I'm gaming with in that session, because they give a handy at-a-glance overview of what to expect from a game.

mb [Heavy to Medium Games] [Medium to Light Games] [Filler & Social Games][Two-Player Games]

I've helped significantly with the Board Game Gift Guide over the last number of years, so if you're relatively new to games, the recommendations there are a good place to start.
