Ender's Greatest Hits: Celebrating 100,000 thumbs and a platinum meeple
-
There's a few folks here who have already earned over 100,000 thumbs. Some have done so by being regular participants in the Spread the Love thread, but like others I've had to earn my thumbs the old fashioned way - by contributions. I joined BGG in April 2005, and now in May 2011 I've finally arrived at the milestone of 100,000 thumbs, the equivalent of 20 Golden Meeples, and 1 Platinum Meeple.
Platinum Meeple ("I have 100000 thumbs")
This list is a self-indulgent retrospective at what have been some of my more popular contributions - they are a reflection of how BGG is a community, and I have always enjoyed sharing different aspects of the hobby with my fellow gamers, who share a love for games along with me. I consider it a snapshot look at my time on BGG, and figure it will be interesting for me to look back on in a year or two from now.
Of my 100,000 thumbs received, most have been acquired in three main areas that reflect the bulk of my contributions:
26,000+ thumbs - Images 26,000+ thumbs - GeekLists & Items 38,000+ thumbs - Threads & Replies
Finally, don't miss the photo caption contest (with GG prizes) I've posted to help celebrate this milestone!

I love taking photos of games, and trying to improve the game galleries. Once in a while I'll get a more artistic shot, but for the most part most of my photos - about 10,000 in all - are attempts to help make the database complete and useful so that there are clear images of different game components.

I've always loved civilization type games, and this is one of my favourites. I spent a lot of time putting together this review, and it's currently the most thumbed review of all time on BGG.

I and a friend both pre-ordered this game after reading early reports and thinking that it had the promise of being something special. We were among the first to have it in our hands when it hit North America. After playing it intensively for a few days, Dominion became the subject of one of my first ever comprehensive pictorial reviews - this in turn went on to be one of the most thumbed reviews of all time on BGG, and helped draw the attention of publishers to my reviews, so I'm personally indebted to the game as well!

When I first wrote this review, nearly four years after the game was released, Glory to Rome was languishing in relative obscurity. It's since gone on to enter the BGG Top 100, and I'd like to think that this review helped bring this great game to the attention of some people who otherwise might not have heard of it. It's a fantastic card game, and I'm only too glad that others have come to discover and enjoy it as well.

I was quite confident that this game would make a splash after getting hold of a copy shortly after it was published. Matt Leacock was in the hotness as a result of the success of Pandemic, and an innovative approach to dice-rolling along with a civilization theme was a guaranteed recipe for success. This review is currently #5 on the list of all-time most popular reviews on BGG.

Block war games were completely new territory to me when I learned this game. I know that there is real interest in introductory block war games from eurogamers wanting to dip their feet in the waters of war gaming, so I decided to make this particular review function just as much a tutorial as a review, so that other complete newbies like me could join me on the journey of entering this strange new world for the first time.

Carl Chudyk's Glory to Rome was a huge hit, so there was every reason to expect good things of his follow-up card game, Innovation. Given that the game does have a few novel concepts and innovative mechanics, I figured it would be helpful to create a simple play example of a turn, to illustrate the basic concepts of the game. So with the help of my camera and photo editing software, I created a pictorial illustration of game-play, illustrating a sample round of a three player game of Innovation.

Posted when the game was just hot of the press, this report features a description of our first session playing Defenders of the Realm, the fantasy adventure game modelled on Pandemic, as well as some initial impressions about the game.

It's not easy figuring out how a block war game works if you've never played one before. To help illustrate how Richard III works, especially for gamers not familiar with block war games, I figured I'd provide other folks on BGG a pictorial illustration of the game-play, with the intent of showing how the game works and giving a sense of the flow of play. In this game Lancaster's Henry VI was king in London, but his position was vulnerable as a result of the advancing Yorkish armies along with their mercenaries. What will happen next? Read the report to find out!

The rule book contains an example of play, to illustrate how the game of 2 de Mayo works. However, since the example is mostly text, it can be difficult to follow, and the first edition also contained a couple of minor errors. I reconstructed, corrected, and edited the example, and added pictures to provide loyal readers of BGG a pictorial illustration of the game-play. The aim is to help you follow along with the example of play, and get a sense of how the game works. It's a great asymmetrical cat-and-mouse game in the style of Scotland Yard, depicting the historical conflict between the Spanish and French in Madrid on May 2, 1808.

Several games have artwork on the cards which can be combined to form a single image - a feature known as a polyptych. This is a pictorial gallery of some shining examples of this unique feature!

Richard Lederer is an English teacher who collects certifiably genuine bloopers from student essays and exams, which he published in his Anguished English series of books. Some of these are guaranteed to make you laugh out loud until your sides hurt! There's also a sequel list.

A complete list of all the essential rule modifications introduced by the expansion to correct the imbalance of the base game, and to make the base game balanced without needing the expansion. All the necessary adjustments to the rules and to cards are detailed. Also includes other optional rules used by many experienced Mare Nostrum players. Now you can play a balanced Mare Nostrum without needing the expansion to fix the imbalance of the original game!

After going out of print, Railroad Tycoon was re-implemented as Railways of the World, which changed some of the rules for better gameplay (these improvements were first introduced in the Rails of Europe expansion). It is highly recommended to adopt these rule modifications for an improved game. This player aid gives you all the information you need to play Railroad Tycoon with the benefit of the small improvements implemented in the revised edition.

Ender's Favourite Games
These are lists of some of my favourite games, categorized by type and arranged by BGG weight. I mainly use them as a handy reference to help select a game from my collection that will be suitable for who I'm gaming with in that session, because they give a handy at-a-glance overview of what to expect from a game.
[Heavy to Medium Games] [Medium to Light Games] [Filler & Social Games][Two-Player Games]
I've helped significantly with the Board Game Gift Guide over the last number of years, so if you're relatively new to games, the recommendations there are a good place to start.

Photo Caption Contest
Since 2008 I have run four BGG Photo Caption Contests. There were some excellent entries and winners, and over 150GG of prizes were awarded. To celebrate reaching the milestone of 100,000 thumbs, I'm running a new Photo Caption Contest, with at least 20GG in prizes. Please join me in this contest for some fun, share your wit, and maybe win some GeekGold!

It appears to be a purchasable MB - which it shouldn't be if it is System Awarded.
Which suggests it is not or their is a naughty code monkey.
Check out my profile - It is currently freely available to purchase as I have just done so (though obviously I will delete it in due course).
