So summer is getting nearer and we are all looking forward to a few weeks off the normal rutine, whilst getting some games in, if possible new games.

So lets see what is happening in MMP.

Releases

Karelia '44 is out now, leaving some space for a new SCS It never snows in September.

None but Heroes, the new LOB system is already out, it was released the day I decided to preorder it, so I missed it!

New games up

None.

General news

According to MMP there is going ot be a new in-house magazine... read for yourself

Quote:
A question we have been receiving recently is what's the status of Operations magazine.

With the success of Operations Special Issues, coupled with the slight monetary loss which happens with the release of every non-SI Operations, we have decided upon the following course of action:

We intend to release a magazine twice a year which will contain content similar to the Special Issues (i.e., variants, new smaller games, etc.). There are a lot of reasons why we decided to go this route, but we believe this puts us in the absolute best position to put out a "house mag" on a regular schedule with contents that may interest most gamers who support MMP with their purchases.

We will probably be changing the name of the magazine, as we can't keep calling it a "Special Issue", nor do we feel we can we keep calling it "Operations" since its so radically different in content.

The release dates will be center roughly around our two largest conventions - MMP's own Winter Offensive and the World Boardgaming Championships (in other words, January and August, approximately).

Content will be in the neighborhood of 40 pages, with two small or one "standard" games or variants (1 map, 1 countersheet, rules). We will be supporting all of our games through this magazine (although obviously each magazine can't have content on everything we produce!)

The first issue of this new magazine will contain a new SCS "ancients" game designed by Dean Essig and a small two-player game on Stalingrad designed by Tom Morin with design/development help from Nick Richardson. Two very interesting offerings which should be available at WBC during the first week in August.

The second issue is leaning towards East Front WWII with a new IGS title from Adam Starkweather and some interesting ASL / ASLSK content from Chas Argent and friends. This issue should be available at/shortly-after Winter Offensive 2012.

We will be sure to announce on our news page when these issues go on preorder! Similar to some game reprints, it will not be required to hit its number to be printed - we are merely giving you a chance to save a little cash!

All existing "endless subscription" information will be deleted from our databases. Thank you for your participation in that plan while it was in effect.

Last but not least, I have started to think that MMP has a much less following here in BGG than GMT, the numbers of thumbs of this list is less than a third that of GMT, so if you read and enjoy this geeklist, why not give it a thumb?

One line definition Second edition of a quick playing, easy-medium level Platoon and company level game on the Spanish Civil War.

Months on the list: 18 (added November 09)

Numbers: 179/525 (Preorders receive/ preorders necessary) +2

The Buzz:

The Company Line:
To the Barricades!, the first title in the War Storms series, is a game which attempts to simulate, at platoon and company level, the battles which took place on the different fronts of the war. The rules are oriented towards the tactical simulation of combat involving armored vehicles, infantry, artillery, and aircraft, and as such they are especially suited to represent almost any 20th century armed conflict as it actually happened.

Artwork: Nicolas Eskubi
Components:
- 4 full-color maps
- 2 countersheets
- 1 full-color rulebook in both English and Spanish
- 12 scenarios
- 2 dice, box, and lid

My unnecessary comments

I missed the opportunity when I could have bought it in Spain. I was not interested in Spanish Civil War tactical game at the time, and I am still not interested (I am more an operational/strategic guy) but I hope a game designed by a Spanish sells well.

Definately is a rare topic, and bear in mind that the tactics and weapons used in this time are similar but not exactly the same to WWII. Want to check the differences?

BTW, the counter art is worth seeing. If Niko is one of the best artist nowadays, this is surely his labor of love. Look at them and tell me.

Not much interest in the Spanish CivilWar this month.

mb
One line definition Multiplayer (as in more than two) wargame covering a rare conflict and with asymetrical warfare. What's not to like?

Months on the list: Unknown. July 2010 exceeded its preorder goal.

Numbers: 580/500 1

The Buzz Counters are being finished, to be ready in the second batch.According to Brian Youse this is now on the third batch

The Company Line:
Angola recreates a brief portion of the violent, decades-long Angolan civil war that began in the 1970s with the fall of a colonial power and dragged its bloody way into the 21st century thanks in part to cold war politics. Angola is a multi-player game in which players control the various Soviet- and US-backed factions that vied for control of Angola from 1975 to 1976. Originally released in limited quantities by Ragnar Brothers of the UK, Angola quickly became a rare and highly sought after game of almost cult status. Why? Angola features a number of innovative game systems that keep players guessing, create plenty of tension, and reward the right balance of boldness and caution. MMP is now updating this classic with the fabulous graphics of the IGS line of games and bringing it to a wider audiences.

The map is divided into areas, and units represent military formations and also special weapons, such as artillery, rockets, tanks, and airplanes. A unique command and activation system has players committing in secret to the order in which they will activate a limited number of their units for the turn. The players then take turns activating their units in the determined order. The result is like a tense game of poker, with players trying to analyze the map and out guess their enemies.

This is the game that has received more shilling in the history of wargaming! Angola fanatics have been shouting its name all around the internet, but, is it worth it? I think I will never know as, having troubles finding 1 opponent, I will never manage to play this game!

It recovered from last month's lost, but still not specially high numbers.

One line definition Impulse Area game from Michael Rinella on WWI, certainly it is not YABG (yet another Bulge game).

Months on the list: Unknown
Exceeded preorder goal on September 2009

Numbers: 613/550 0

The Buzz: Counters are being finished, to be ready in the second batch. According to the designer last month in this list, it will be out in June to August. According to Brian Youse it is the second batch. The designer has said that July-August seems more realistic, so it is close to be out.

The Company Line:

Breakthrough: Cambrai is two player game simulating the British assault to breach the “Hindenburg Line” between November 20 and December 3, 1917. One player controls the British forces, the other the German forces. The object of the game is to control a certain number of areas on the map or, for the British, to exit units off the map into certain perimeter zones.
Breakthrough: Cambrai is an area-movement game which uses impulse mechanics (where players alternate "mini-turns") similar to popular games like Breakout:Normandy and Monty's Gamble, Market Garden. The impulse nature of the game means little or no down time for each player while waiting for the other to complete a move or attack.

Impulse Area game tend to be quite solitaire friendly, quick and easy to play. In particular the subject matter seems pretty interesting and the designer has a name on this genre. On the lookout.

Soon will be out, which will probably help rise interest in other games by the designer, or using the same system.

One line definition TCS on the battles fought by the Canadians after D-Day.

Months on the list: 2 First Apperance in April 2011

Numbers: 248/480 +59

The Buzz: No Mapple leaf as Canadian symbol! (read the discussion on CSW).

The Company Line:
Canadian Crucible is a new entry in the Gamers Tactical Combat Series (TCS) depicting the Canadian defense of Norrey on D-Day +2 (June 8, 1944) against a counterattack spearheaded by Grenadiers of the 12th SS Panzer Division.

The battle depicted here begins on D-Day +2, June 8th, and continues for the next 3 days and was known by the Germans as the First Battle for Caen. The situation unfolds with the 7th Brigade of the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division dug-in on its D-Day objectives. Aware of the resounding defeat that the 9th Brigade suffered the previous day at the hands of the Hitler Youth, the 7th prepares a Fortress around Bretteville, Norrey and Putot. The soldiers of the Regina Rifles and the Royal Winnipeg Rifles, still under strength from their D-Day losses, wait their turn for the inevitable encounter with the Grenadiers of the 12th SS Panzer Division. The Canadian must hold their thin red line at all cost as failure to do so could result in a serious set back affecting the invasion time table and loss of the initiative to the Germans.

This game is a well-balanced, 1-map fight between the highly motivated 12SS Hitlerjugend and their equally motivated Canadians who are determined to preserve and expand their D-Day bridgehead.

Canadian Crucible includes:

Devastating Naval Bombardment
Variable Events Table
Historical and free setup options
Panzer Meyer
Discarding Sabot rounds
Radio jamming
Captured battle plans
Components:

Four player aid cards
24"x32" Color Game Map

After learning my way through OCS (still learning) my respect for Dean Essig grows by the minute. I am not particularly interested in this game, but the TCS siren is calling out for me to learn the system.

One line definition The Spanish Civil War, on the Strategic level using a system similar to Paths of Glory. I want it. I want it yesterday!

Months on the list: 19 (added October '09)

Numbers: 396/580 -3

The Buzz:

The Company Line:

In July 1936, a failed coup d’état provoked a bloody civil war that would devastate Spain during nearly three years. The eyes of Europe turned towards a divided nation where not only armies fought, but also ideologies.

Crusade and Revolution is a wargame that uses the popular card-driven system to recreate the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) at strategic-operational level. Each player leads one side (Nationalist or Republican), and manages all the challenges that the actual combatants faced: mobilization, recruitment, movement and the combat of a nation at war with itself – and the political stage as well.

Crusade and Revolution (C&R) brings together the great hallmarks of our hobby—enjoyment, playability and historical simulation. It makes good use of the great virtues of the very popular card-driven system. Using this famous system and adapting it to the peculiarities of a conflict that has its own personality, Crusade and Revolution will seem both brand new and also familiar.

Each player has his own deck of 55 strategic cards, which are the heart of the game. Each card has four possible uses but the players must choose which use best fits their needs.

- The possibilities are: Events: Each card shows a historical event that directly affected the course of the war. They can be political, military, economic or social events.
- Operations: Each card has an operations value that is used for activating units on the game map for movement, fortification or attack.
- Strategic Redeployment: Each card has a Strategic Redeployment value that is used for moving units great distances on the game map.
- Replacement Points: Each card has a value of Replacement Points that are collected and used for reconstructing damaged or destroyed units at the end of the turn.
The better the historical value of an event card, greater its number of Operations, Redeployment and Replacements. Players are faced with the constant battle of how to use their cards: use an interesting event, launch an offensive in a vulnerable zone, move units from one front to other, or accumulate replacements to recover from losses?

Game Details:
- Solitaire Rating: ?
- Game scale: Each space represents approximately 60 kilometers.
- Time scale: Two Months per turn (except for the very early phase of the war when turns are a month in length
- Units: From columns, regiments and brigades in the early stages of the war to great corps sized armies modeled in European style
- Scenarios: Three
- Playing time: From 4 hours to 12 hours to the full campaign game

Retail Price: $80.00
Pre-Order Price: $60.00
MMP website: http://www.multimanpublishing.com/preorder/viewGame.php?id=7...

Designer: David Gomez Relloso
Developer: Adam Starkweather

Components:
- 22"x34" Game Map
- 1 5/8" Diecut Countersheet
- 1 1/2" Diecut Countersheet
- 1 Rulebook
- 1 Playbook
- 4 Player Reference Cards (2 copies of 2 cards)
- 1 Card for Event Markers
- 2 Decks of Strategy Cards (55 each)
- Six-Sided Die

My unnecessary comments From what I have seen (AAR's here in BGG, designer interview here and in Battles Magazine and reading the rules) this is going to be THE definitive game on the SCW. The idea that the SCW was more a political war than a military war leads to the need to use cards to simulate it. You now you want it (where is the Hypnotoad when you need it)

After a pretty good month (+12) a really slow one. Lets see if the 70th anniversary of the Spanish Republic helps this title rise.

Tied for worst result with another game, a loss of 3 is a very hard loss. I don't want to appear bitter so I'll leave it here

One line definition The ALB series goes into WWII.

Months on the list: Unknown. Preorder reached date unknow

Numbers: 337/300 +3

The Buzz: According to Niko, this one should be after the already mentioned batches.

The Company Line:

In May, 1940, World War II took a turn that will change history forever—the German Army invaded France through the neutral countries of Belgium and Netherlands and thus avoiding the fearsome Maginot Line. The French Army, supposedly the best army of the time, felt far from any threat. Against all expectations, the neutral nations were quickly overrun, and the British Expeditionary Corps was forced to be evacuated, almost miraculously, from the channel port of Dunkirk. France capitulated in two months.

This game recreates those events and allows players to reproduce, at a tactical level, the most famous battles of the “Blitzkrieg”. Based on the “A las Barricadas” game system, with new rules added to simulate to this historical period, France 1940 promises many enjoyable hours of fierce game play involving infantry, tanks, artillery, and aircraft from all the armies that took part in this campaign.

My unnecessary comments I hope that this one gets published so people may see how the WSS system (A Las Barricadas) works and maybe preorder the ALB and Help Arrives. I understand that France 1940 is more similar to Spain 1936-39, but I would have gone into Bulge, Market Garden or Normandy, to pick peoples interest !

Will it make it on 2010? Complicated but possible. I think this one will determine the fate of ALB and Help Arrives. Also, will it compete with the new system GMT is putting out?

Months on the list: Unknown Exceeded in March 2010

Numbers: 620/450 +19

The Buzz: Currently at the printers. Soon to be ready. It is next one to be shipped according to MMP will it be out this month?

The Company Line:

Guderian’s Blitzkrieg II depicts the German drive to capture Moscow in the fall of 1941 (Operation Typhoon) and the first Russian Winter Counteroffensive. In 1942, the German player can attempt another stab at Moscow, or conserve his strength to deal a death-blow to the November 1942 Russian offensive Operation Mars (as happened historically).

Guderian’s Blitzkrieg II is a reprint of the 8th game in the award winning Operational Combat Series. It mates with the 2007 CSR Award winning game Case Blue to show all of the Eastern Front south of Army Group North from 1 Oct 41 through the end of May 1943.

Owners of the 2001 printing of this game that have Case Blue do not need to purchase this printing. Owners that do not have Case Blue might be interested in this version because it incoporates the upgrades that occurred in Case Blue. In any event. The set ups, rules, and Orders of Arrival have been updated to the Case Blue Standards. Known errata in the original has been corrected.

A good historical intro is available at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5Ked1P0eTA

For a little over two weeks, massed Syrian armor tried to swamp the Israeli defenders who were buying time to allow mobilized reserves to arrive. They succeeded and managed to turn the tide launching their own offensive toward Damascus.

Heights of Courage is the 15th game in the award winning Standard Combat Series. It complements the 1995 CSR award winning game Yom Kippur (which covers the fighting in the Sinai). It uses the same 8 page standard series rulebook applicable to all the other games to bring out the action in a “beer and pretzel” way familiar to all wargamers.

Because both sides have offensive and defensive phases of the battle to enjoy, victory is determined by comparing the best Syrian performance in their early offensive to the Israeli offensive results at the end of the game. This forces both sides to fight tooth and nail on both the offense and defense with enormous time pressure on perform rapidly.

Designer Steve Newhouse (previously part of the team that created The Mighty Endeavor) gives all the sizzle of the fast-paced armored battle with enough steak to give the game the appropriate level of depth. For example, he gives an innovative two tempo operational speeds to both players as the battle goes beyond the endurance of the forces involved. Each player can select to go “fast” in order to fight more or “slow” in order to get more replacements.

While Heights of Courage cannot be directly linked to Yom Kippur, the game provides rules to allow players to play both games in tandem so as to play the “whole war.”

Scale: Each turn is between 1/2 to two days (depending on when in the battle the turn represents). Each hex is 1 mile across. Syrian units are battalions and brigades. The Israelis are shown as task forces which range from half battalion to company sizes.

Four scenarios allow different looks at the 17 turn campaign (turn length varies based on when a cease-fire occurs).
The full Historical Campaign
A short version of the Historical Campaign (10 turns)
Operation Badhr—a 6 turn look at the Syrian offensive
Operation Al-Owda—an accelerated Syrian offensive which can be played in the 6, 10 or 17 turn versions (the Syrian plan was watered down for various reasons).

The fate of Israel hangs in the balance. Are you up to the task?

My unnecessary comments This is mind boggling. The Gamers only puts up games for preorder when they are ready. There is an excellent AAR report in the CSW folder for SCS. The SCS is a popular series. And still not a single picture here or in their webpage.

The SCS system is really nice. You can learn how to play in less than an hour (unless someone teaches you, then it is just 10 minutes) and play a lot of games with the same system. Like it a lot.

The growth of this title is really nice with the designer showing a lot of love on CSW (less love here)

One line definition Area impulse game on the pacific. Why is it not popular?

Months on the list: 37

Numbers: 535/530 +13 It made its goal!!!

The Buzz:

The Company Line:

Kawaguchi's Gamble: Edson's Ridge covers the area of Edson's Ridge and the surrounding jungle just south of Henderson Airfield on the island of Guadalcanal during September 1942. The Japanese, as part of a complicated multi-pronged attack, sent three battalions, nearly 3000 men, charging towards the ridge protecting the airfield. Almost 800 Paramarines and Raiders defended the ridge with amazing courage and, despite suffering horrible casualties, kept from being overrun and saved both the airfield and possibly the Marine presence on Guadalcanal. The Japanese are often cited as having lost nearly 80% of their men attacking the ridge.
Kawaguchi's Gamble: Edson's Ridge is five turns long, each turn is a variable length of alternating impulses. The game length between experienced gamers is 2.5 to 3 hours.

A very good month for area-impulse games, now it is time for the long wait for a publishing spot. BTW I am currently reading Helmet for my pillow, so I might need this game after all!.

The Buzz:

The Company Line:

In October 1941, the German Army launched Operation Typhoon – the last major German offensive of the year. In an all-out attempt to defeat Russia and end World War Two, the Germans managed to see the spires of the Kremlin as their high water mark for both this battle and for the war. Over two million men fought in this desperate battle that would decide the war and the future of mankind.

Masahiro Yamazaki, the designer of the MMP games Red Star Rising and Stalingrad Pocket has designed his greatest game on this great conflict—Last Stand; The Battle for Moscow 1941-1942. Using all the tricks in his designer’s bag, Mas has made this titanic struggle playable but without sacrificing a great sense of history. Offering 3 scenarios to show different aspects of the campaign, and a unique way of showing the plight of the Soviet morale as a nation faces possible complete military defeat, all in a manageable size, Last Stand is a game that has no competitor.

One line definition The American Civil War is still looking for its definitive treatment. Could this be it?

Months on the list: 18

Numbers: 287/650 +3

The Buzz: The designer is posting some information on the game over in CSW in order to try to raise awareness for this title. Check out his blog here http://boardgamegeek.com/blog/445/lincolns-war-politics-and-...

The Company Line:

Lincoln's War

Lincoln’s War - The American Civil War was fractious in more ways than one. Abraham Lincoln power-brokered his way into the presidency, dealing with men who had no confidence in him, men who openly called him a bumpkin and gorilla. Jefferson Davis had to deal with a Vice President who felt he was a fool and with state governors who openly opposed his handling of the war. Both men entrusted their armies to military incompetents. At times, it seemed the general staffs and administrations of these men represented a second front in the war.

Lincoln’s War is a two to four player, “broad strokes” political approach to the Civil War, covering the 1861 call to arms through the fateful 1864 Presidential election. Political but no less combative, Lincoln’s War offers a unique, dice-less combat system, the introduction of 132 military and political personality cards—including 14 seditious characters, the challenge of juggling political resources (essentially victory points) to conducting military campaigns while maintaining national morale, make Lincoln’s War a delightfully fresh approach to the American Civil War.

Lincoln’s War is a card driven, hex-movement game lasting seven turns representing six months. Lincoln’s War takes two to three hours to play.

Each turn consists of six alternating phases: Initiative; Administration; Naval and Rail; Operations Card play; Supply; and Timekeeping.

Each turn, players are dealt a nine card hand they must use to make a myriad of decisions, including: banking political capitol, undermining the enemy’s moral, issuing marching orders, nudging reluctant generals into action, initiating battle, promoting worthy leaders, repairing battle damage, investing in a naval strategy, or setting political capitol aside to support the combat of favored generals. You, as the players, do all this, while dealing with seditious countrymen who erode your political support.

Lincoln’s War contains:

1 24” x 34” map
1 16-page rulebook
1 10 page optional rules and background booklet
160 Operations Cards (80 Union, 80 Confederate) Take A Peek!
140 1” counters Take A Peek!
76 5/8” counters
2 player aid cards
Lincoln’s War was designed by John Poniske with the assistance of Mike Joslyn, and features the artwork of Niko Eskubi.

My unnecessary comments I am not much into this war, nor am I a huge fam of John Poniske's games. Nevertheless, there are a lot of people that really like this designer.

Steady growth for a game that departs a little from MMP standard fare

One line definition Grand Tactical Series in North Afrika. Rommel versus Free French.

Months on the list: Unknown

Numbers: 773/510 0

The Buzz: According to Brian Youse this will make the third batch. Assume fall 2011 at the earliest.

The Company Line:

The Grand Tactical Series moves to North Africa! Taking the acclaimed system used in The Devil’s Cauldron, this game gives players the chance to explore the struggle of the free French forces, including two Foreign Legion battalions, as they attempt to hold out against the might of Rommel’s Panzerarmee Afrika at the southern tip of the Gazala line in an abandoned Turkish fort.

Three times the French were asked to surrender, each time they refused, with General Koenig stating that there was “no question of surrender”.

No Question of Surrender is the first game in the Grand Tactical Series of company-level games offered by Multi-Man Publishing to examine the North African campaign. The game will also introduce new terrain types to the system and new special rules to cover events from the battle.

The Free French, composed of “gaullists, swashbucklers and criminals of twenty different nations” according to Rommel’s aide Alfred Berndt, have to hold out against the Germans and Italians as Rommel adds more and more strength to try and crack the Großstüzpunkt (major strong point).

Scenarios will include:

The historical attack by the Italian Ariete Division on the morning of May 27, 1942
An attack by the full Ariete Division on May 27 (to allow players to explore if the Italian’s could have captured Bir Hacheim)
The fight over point 186 where the Germans briefly capture the pivotal observation point, only the be repulsed by the Free French
And finally, the full siege starting on June 2 as the Free French try to hold out against ever increasing Italian and German forces.

Taking the same level of care and detail that was observed in The Devil’s Cauldron, No Question of Surrender continues the excellence in gaming expected from the Grand Tactical Series.

No Question of Surrender Component List:

My unnecessary comments The first in the series disappear on a blink of an eye, and the buzz has been fantastic, but in this one there are no americans, so will it be the same? You can see previews of the graphics in MMP webpage in the blogs section.

The Buzz:

The Company Line:
MMP is proud to announce the creation of a new series of games, the "Variable Combat Series (VCS)." The Series opener is VCS Salerno, a game undertaking the nearly impossible task of depicting the 1943 Allied invasion of Southern Italy and places all of the invading forces on a single mapsheet.

The main invasion, Operation Avalanche, is portrayed on Map Section A which is 1/3 of the map at 1 mile per hex. The east coast, Map Section B, is also at 1 mile per hex and contains strategic ports, highways and the main Axis airbase of Foggia. The last 1/3, Map Section C, is drawn up at 3 miles per hexside and is used by for the other two main operations, Operation Slapstick, the capture of Taranto, and Operation Baytown, the methodical capture of the Calabrian peninsula (toe of Italy).

One line definition Another Area Impulse game on a rare subject. The french resistance against Vietnamese attack.

Months on the list: 19. October 09

Numbers: 153/520 +1

The Buzz: Can be acquired together with Storm over Normandy in a bundle. The Bundle has 253 preorders. +3

The Company Line:
In the spring of 1954, General Giap shocked the world by doing what had previously been considered impossible—defeating a Western occupying force. Storm Over Dien Bien Phu simulates the climatic moment when the isolated French forces (composed of French legionnaires and elite paratrooper units), crumbled under the unrelenting pressure of the Chinese–backed Viet Minh forces.

Using the Area Move system redefined in Storm Over Stalingrad, the game features the use of cards to augment game play, adding to the tension experienced by both sides. The rules are similar in length to those seen in Storm Over Stalingrad, and are of the same level of complexity, with additions made for the situations encountered in this battle.

Additional rules added to the game include sapping, assaulting, and the French supply situation. In addition to these new rules, new cards have been created in order to represent events encountered during the battle. These include “Detonate Mine Shaft”, “Rats of the Nam Yum”, “Giap Demands Success”, “Propoganda”, “Débouchez à Zéro!”, and “B-26 Bombers”.

The game focuses on the attacks on the strongpoints of Gabrielle, Anne–Marie, Beatrice, Eliane, Claudine, Huguette and Dominique from mid–March to early May of 1953. The game is eight turn longs, and can easily be played in less than 3 hours by experienced players.

The Company Line:
Kingdom of Heaven is a two-player card-driven game that allows the players to experience the great campaigns in the Middle East between A.D. 1097 and 1291. Nine different historical scenarios pit the greatest commanders of the age against one another: Nur ad-Din, Richard the Lionhearted, Saladin, Frederick Barbarossa, Louis IX, Hulegu Khan, Baibars, and many others.
Each turn represents one year, and the scenarios range in length from the 3-turn First Crusade learning scenario to the 7-turn assault of Baibars on the faltering ramparts of the Crusader States. The game emphasizes playability, and every scenario should be completable in a 3-4 hour evening. Complexity is approximately the same as Wilderness War by GMT or Shifting Sands by MMP.

One line definition An area game on the battle for the Philipines in 1944 and 1945

Months on the list: 19. October 09

Numbers: 306/590 9

The Buzz:

The Company Line:
The Setting Sun is an area game on the great battle for the Philippines in 1944 and 1945. From the Kamikaze attacks to the great sea battle of Leyte Gulf, the entire campaign is presented in The Setting Sun.

Although aspects of the greatest sea battle in history have been in game form, never have all three aspects of the campaign been in one game. The Setting Sun will cover the great battle for the Philippines in 1944 campaign with equal respect to the air, naval and land battle. Players will be in the shoes of the two of the greatest commanders of World War Two; Douglas MacArthur and Tomoyuki Yamashita as they duel over the fate of the Philippines. You choose where to invade as the Americans and how to defend and defeat the US invasion as the Japanese. Using a system that has evolved from the popular Storm over Stalingrad game, Tetsuya Nakamura has created a unique system to go with this unique campaign.

The heart of the game is the use of chained game cards that allow for a near infinite variety of moves and combats. You must play a card to do anything but each card can modify each other so you can tailor make your operation to suit and each combination is unique. You must randomly draw your hand each turn and fight with the cards you were dealt literally.

My unnecessary comments

MMP has now a lot of games using "not-so-common" mechanics and on, relatively, obscure topics. It can be a good move and an interesting one if they finally do it, but, on the other hand, they are not getting the preorders for this new games. Are people thinking that MMP is just for complicated stuff and not checking out new games? This is what this list tries to battle.

The designer is doing a play by play game in CSW, and it immediately rises from 0 to 9 preorders.... playtesters, designers and developers, see what a little love can do to your games!

One line definition Strategic level wargame on the war between China and Japan

Months on the list: Unknwon. Preorder goal reached

Numbers: 507/410 +2

The Buzz: It is not on any of the defined batches but still mentioned for a generic "fourth batch", could (difficult but still) make it in 2011.

The Company Line:

The war in China-India-Burma theatre is always looked at as through a veil; perceived as a backwater front of the far larger conflict that was World War Two. Nevertheless, this war was vital to the final Allied victory in the Pacific, and even more so to the impact this war would have on the post-war world. Many “what-ifs” could have dramatically changed the world. What if China had surrendered in 1937 and over a million Japanese soldiers would be free to overrun India. There would be no Flying Tigers or Doolittle's Raid, or even Pearl Harbor. If Japan could have mobilized Chinese manpower, the world as we know it might not exist.

War of the Suns (WotS) was first designed by Leonard To, a Hong Kong native, more than 20 years ago. It won the championship of the First Wargame Design Competition in Hong Kong in 1984. The game has since been updated in the early 90's, and extensively again during the last 3 years. Offering exclusive research based on recently opened Chinese archives, as well as many Japanese and English sources, has made War of the Suns one of the most painstakingly researched and accurate games of its type ever made.

The title of the — "War of the Suns", refers to the flags of Kuomintang China and Imperial Japan. The game itself covers the period from July 1937 to August 1945. The roughly 1:3,000,000 map covers most of China proper, Burma, Assam area of India, and parts of Thailand and Indochina.

There is a campaign game as well as 5 separate scenarios, and the game can be played as a 1-4 players' game-with players taking the roles of Japanese, KMT, CCP, and British Commonwealth. In the game, politics will play as vital a role in how the game progresses as the units presented on the map.

Other key game concepts include: The HQ activation system - Players move units under the activated HQ. The number of activated HQs is affected by command points, the quality of HQ selected, and whether China is cut off from foreign routes. Randomness and quality of the HQ affects who moves what first.
The KMT replacement system - KMT units are divided into 3 levels: The elite units with imported weapons; the standard units equipped with what Chinese herself produced; and the local units which simply bought whatever they could find locally.
The Political Affiliation system - Each warlord and minor country has its own home territory. They may be affiliated with different players at different levels under different conditions. Friend may become foe with a random or historical triggering event.
The Guerilla System - From the setting up of guerrilla bases to a unique combat system, Guerrilla actions from CCP, KMT, and even British player can be as active as the front line.
Optional Rules - The game does not shy away from controversial subjects such as wartime atrocity, opium production, and Japanese collaborators. It also includes an "alternate history" section that probes into many "what if?" situations, e.g. what if Stilwell has not been recalled, but instead was capable of commanding all the Chinese forces?

War of the Suns Scale:

Game Turn: 3 months
Counters: Army/Division for the Chinese;
Division/Brigade for the Japanese and British
Game Details:

Players: 1-4
Scenarios: 5
Complexity: Medium to Hard
Playing Time: 5 to 34 hours
War of the Sun Components:

3 22"x32" mapsheets
Over 1500 counters on 12 countersheets
48 page rulebook
9 player aid cards
4 six-sided dice

Retail Price: $160.00
Pre-order Price: $120.00

My unnecessary comments A monster wargame, a monster price, a monster (in a good sense) of an artwork and a war because two major nations that started before WWII and almost ended after WWII. This is a really interesting topic far from the well crossed roads of the East front (and it is even further east!)

Crawling but already over the top!

One line definition The Warriors of God system goes to feudal Japan for more chaos and nobles killing.

Months on the list: 19. October 09

Numbers: 386/560 -2

The Buzz:

The Company Line:
Long considered one of the greatest games to ever be published in Japan, Warriors of Japan will feature much of the same system as we have seen in Warriors of God. The game covers the Nanboku-cho period of Japanese history and simulates one of the most dynamic and important periods in Japanese history.

From 1336-1392, all of Japan was aflame with war. After the fall of a corrupt and ineffective emperor, the two great courts of Japan dueled to determine the future ruler of the country. Warriors of Japan covers the vital period following the destruction of the Kamakura shogunate and the fight to find a successor.

Players of Warriors of God will find much familiar here, however, unlike the enormous time period covered in Warriors of God, Warriors of Japan covers only 4 years. Subtle changes in the system to cover this unique period have been exchanged in Warriors of Japan. For example, Leaders no longer die from old age but rather can switch sides unexpectedly during a combat. Subtle changes in the movement and combat rules will add to the strategy to a greater extent than in Warriors of God. A random game start generator will keep each game fresh and interesting.

My unnecessary comments

The Sengoku-jidai era is one of the most fascinating eras for a war-history buff. The way innovations, religion and allegiances where used is simply enthrilling. And this game uses a tried system. But it is not about the Sengoku-jidai era, but on the Nanboku-cho period hundred years earlier!

Not a good month, losing two preorders.

One line definition First World War CDG on the Western Front by the joint minds of Tetsuda Nakamura and Adam Starkweather.

Months on the list: 19 (October 09)

Numbers: 340/580 +2

The Buzz:

The Company Line:
The heart of this game is a new way to use cards to drive the system. Players choose which cards they will use in the upcoming turn from a 16 card deck and plan out how the 6 month turn will play out. Some cards are defensive in nature (the very nasty Machine Guns card for example) and some are offensive in nature (allowing for multiple activations, recovery, railroading and reinforcements). Also in the cards a player can play are major events that change the shape of the war (submarine warfare, air power, neutral entry, Jutland etc.). You will never have enough cards to do what you want to do and your opponent will constantly be ruining your plans by trying to execute his own plans. The player that is best able to juggle their resources will find the path to victory the easiest. The cards also link together and allow for many cards to be played in unison in a unique way to allow for an infinite variance in how to use your resources most effectively.

Although the unique and complex way the player’s card hands interact is the heart of the game, the game also covers in a more simple way all of the major events that occurred in the Great War. Jutland, the 1918 race between US entry and German reinforcement from the East and much more are covered in a highly simple but effective manner allowing the Great War to be experienced in a comprehensive manner and yet the system takes minutes to learn and only 4 hours to play. The sophistication of the card play allows for great replayability.

Game Details:
- Solitaire Rating: Fair
- Complexity: Easy
- Playing Time: 3-5 hours
- Scenarios: 1
- Game scale: Units are corps, turns are biannual.

The names of the designer are clearly a winner, but it certainly needs more exposure to garner more preorders. Specially when you hear WWI and west front on the same phrase!

We could use more information on this game (hint, hint) I said it last month, but I'll repeat it again

One line definition Companion game to The Devil's Cauldron that was OOP on the blink of an eye.

Months on the list: Unknown. Exceeded its preorder goal.

Numbers: 1270/450 +9

The Buzz: The counters are done and proofed. As soon as other parts are received it will go out. According to Brian Youse, not on any of the batches, it can be a surprise any time in 2011.

ADAM says:Just a heads up that only 2000 will be printed and that 1200+ preorder number includes store orders that are only counted as 1/2 an order.

It is close to sold out now...order it while you still can.

The Company Line:
The eagerly-awaited sequel to The Devil’s Cauldron, Where Eagles Dare completes the Market Garden saga and allows players to play out the entire operation. In addition, Where Eagles Dare is also a complete and standalone game and offers a fascinating game situation in which the outnumbered, elite 101st Airborne division must race from emergency to emergency to maintain the vital lifeline to the British 1st Airborne Division fighting for its life in Arnhem. This single and fragile lifeline would come to be called “Hell’s Highway”.
Where Eagles Dare: the Battle for Hell’s Highway is the next game in the Grand Tactical Series of company level games offered by Multi-Man Publishing. The game will also introduce new terrain types and new special rules to fully explore the battle. Where Eagles Dare will introduce a special off map movement system to allow the Germans to move forces from sector to sector of the battlefield and a host of other rules to make this game as unique and interesting as The Devil’s Cauldron.

A series I cannot afford. So much price and so much space mean that it is too much for too little play (nevertheless, I have ordered GBII!) The counter art is a work of art!

Probably already OOP. Shouldn't MMP consider a bigger print run?

Only 2000 print run, already 1270 preorders, and still nowhere in sight. Will it be sold out for preorders before it is even printed?

ASLRB MMP is being more efficient and reprinting the RB as soon as it goes OOS.

Budapest Hasl Yes, you've guessed it, more ASL!
