Your NON-Game Thrift Store / Bargain Finds - June 2011
-
This is the traditional monthly NON-Game thrift and bargain finds list.
Wait a minute. That's not a game! Oh well. Let us oooh and aaah over what you've found.
These lists may start empty but as always: add your items. Try to post a snapshot with your entry! Put in what you consider a bargain, tell us how much you paid and the place you got it from. Bargains can be thrift store finds or any second-hand purchases. Don't forget to add your encounters with the Thrift Store Irritant Squadâ„¢ and any other embellishments in order to make it even more interesting.
Last month's non-game thrift list: Just shift the Picasso's aside and be amazed by the collection of valuables we tend to pick up. Your NON-Game Thrift Store/Bargain Finds (May 2011)

I picked up a Texas Instruments TI-86 graphing calculator for $3 at a garage sale. It was marked at $5, but I was able to negotiate it down. It is missing the battery cover and the slip cover.
With the missing parts, I'm guessing it will difficult to resell this, but I'll be happy to sub this in for my TI-83+ I use from time-to-time.

At a garage sale I found a box full of hardcover Star Wars books for $1 each. I negotiated to pick up 9 books for $6 total.
Titles are as follows:
The Last Command - Timothy Zahn
Darth Bane: Path of Destruction - Drew Karpyshyn
Planet of Twilight - Barbara Hambly
Darksaber - Kevin J. Anderson
Children of the Jedi - Barbara Hambly
The Truce at Bakura - Kathy Tyers
Episode I: The Phantom Menace - Terry Brooks
Episode II: Attack of the Clones - R. A. Salvatore
Revenge of the Sith - Matthew Stover
I left behind a few duplicates and titles I already owned.

For $2 at a garage sale, I picked up a wireless headset that lets me plug the receiver into anything with a mic jack. Will be nice for listening to the TV or computer at night if I go to bed before my wife.

A Creative Playthings Multiway Rollway marble runway set. marked $7.99 @ Salvation Army. Talked them into half price, so $3.99.
This 1968 all-wood marble runway set is in great shape. It may be missing a small piece or two, as the box isn't packed quite full, but it's sure close. Only one marble left, but I just got 31 spares in the 1952 Stadium Checkers game I picked up a few days ago.
This is a later box cover of the set I bought:

Very excited about this find:
A Molecular Visions #4 Flexible Inorganic-organometallic Molecular Model Kit, $3.99 @ SA.
This kit is still being sold for $21.75 + shpg. by Darling Models of Stow Ohio, here: www.darlingmodels.com
It inventoried 100% complete, came in its original box, and has all the instructions and paperwork with it. I'm especially stoked because Darling sells all kind of other inexpensive molecule kits including individual parts, just like LEGO.

Making my regular check of the compactor behind GW, no games today, but I did find a little black velvet pouch containing a bracelet made of silver with amber cabochons. Not bad for free.

This is a college town, and weird things do show up in the thrifts from time to time because of it. But I could hardly believe this - in the Coralville Goodwill, just two days after my previous find, here is ANOTHER molecular model kit!
This one's even cheaper @ $2.38, but it retails for much more; for example, it goes for $62.10 online at Sigma-Aldrich. (Mine is dated 1984, but they still sell the exact same set.
This is a ball-and-connector set, so now I have the best of both!
One carbon ball missing, otherwise complete including instruction booklet.

I bake bread on a weekly basis. I have a three loaf baguette pan, but really prefer making the larger French loaves to use for regular and sourdough bread. I just haven't been able to bring myself to pay $25 plus shipping for the pan I want.
Imagine my surprise when I found the exact Chicago Metallic Commercial pan I've wanted at Salvation Army, marked $2.54 and still in shrink! 90% off? Sold!

LEGO MindStorms Robotic Invention System 2.0

also found one of these this month!
This was tagged at $19.99, but it was 1/2 off on all housewares until 11am at the local Value Village - so I got this for $9.99.
All of the important bits were in the box - hopefully they work!
EDIT: after some investigation of the box contents, it is unfortunately missing the IR transmitter tower - which means I have no way of connecting the robot brick to my PC to program it. I'll have to keep my eyes on the shelves at VV to see if it pops up.

Continuing the "Science Month" theme at the local thrifts, I found a copy of RoseArt's Magnetix Glow in the Dark Magnetic Building Set for $3.38 @ GW. Though not as awesome as a molecular model kit, it'll do.
I think I'll give this to my great niece who keeps pestering me to play with MY magnetic ball'n'stick set!

Farscape: The Complete Series on DVD for $9.99 at Goodwill.
I didn't check all 26 discs, but the few I checked were in perfect condition.
I've never seen this show, but I tend to like SciFi, so I'll give it a chance (and I've heard good things). If I don't like it after a few episodes, I can always sell it for at least 4 times what I paid.

I forgot to list this when I found it a few weeks ago. Found a KitchenAid blender. We needed a new one, and these run in the $80-$100 range. Only needed a $5.00 gasket replaced. Otherwise perfect.
$8.00 @GW.

I was lucky enough to send my wife to Strange Adventures comic shop during their beginning of summer sale. Got Grind for 20 bucks! Painted me some jacks.

In the case at Goodwill, I found several machines used for scrapbooking, but I figure they could also be used in crafting some board game supplements or PnP games. They were all brand new, still in the box.
It's called the Making Memories Slice Cordless Design Cutter Machine and there were six of them marked at $19.99 each.
I decided to pick up all six at $14.24 each ($19.99 - 5% Club Goodwill discount - 25% Birthday coupon).
One will be for my wife to use for scrapbooking (and me to potentially use for board game-related activities), one will go to my sister, and the rest will either be given away as gifts, or be sold for nice profit on eBay.
Also of note, another Goodwill that is closer to my house had a few of the same machines listed for $59.99. Amazon is selling them for $53.79.

Still in shrink, $9.95 at Goodwill in Galax, VA; I like Marvin Gaye, but not enough to turn down a probable profit of ~$25 by listing on Amazon...
