Welcome to the July 2011 edition of the GMT P500 update list.

Subscribe today: GMT Monthly P500 Geeklist Announcement Thread

If I thought May just flew by, I have no idea what happened to June. School's out for summer and and in some ways it's going to make things a little easier as summer camp is on tap.

Infidel is getting rave reviews. Floods in China have delayed production of No Retreat and Space Empires, but they're still coming soon and promise to be very popular. There's still time to get those two at the pre-order price, but they're not on the list anymore.

Three new titles announced this month, two of which are must haves for me.

It's going to be a very good summer. Let the games commence!

I'd like to ask the people to thumb this list every month when they come by. It makes me feel appreciated, and hey, who doesn't like to feel appreciated?

Thanks to everyone for their continued kinds words of support of this monthly geeklist and also for your helpful suggestions.

If you do have any comments or suggestions, please do send me a geekmail message or post in the comments section.

Throughout the game, players will gather valuable Permits. These will result in either a wealthy Investment or the foundation of a new building Contract. Players will strive to become dominant in one or more building Zones in order to acquire beneficial political offices.

Current Status: Made the cut

Preorder Price (List Price): $35 ($55)

Comments: Well, this game was ahead of the C&C:N expansion, but only for a moment. It'll have to settle for the tie and try to overtake it next month.

Game Link: http://gmtgames.com/p-331-c-c-ancients-exp-6-the-spartan-arm...

Game Information: We are Sparta… More than a line from a movie, The Spartan Army is the sixth expansion for the Commands & Colors: Ancients game system.

The Spartan Army expansion features over 20 scenarios, which focus on a period of time from 669 BC to 338 BC. In the early battles of Sparta against Argive, we see the development of Hoplite armies. We then move onto the war with the Persian Empire and take a closer look at the battle of Thermopylae, 480 BC. During the Peloponnesian Wars, Sparta takes a leader position among the Peloponnesian states, which would last for almost two centuries. Finally there is a shift in power away from Sparta during the battles of the Theban Era and the rise of Macedon.

Game Link: http://gmtgames.com/p-328-commands-colors-napoleonics-expans...

Game Information: The Spanish Army is the first expansion for Commands & Colors: Napoleonics.

At the time of the Napoleonic Wars, Spain was only a shadow of its former power. Spanish troops and leaders, as many Napoleonic historians point out, performed badly on a large number of occasions. Yet there are a number of battles, Bailen, Tamames, Alcaniz and San Marcial where the Spaniards fought valiantly and gained victory. Ironically, the point most historians overlook is the fact that the Spanish armies constituted a threat that the French simply could not ignore. As good as Wellington’s Anglo-Portuguese field army was, that army faced multiple French armies. They could only defeat one French army at a time. The Spanish Armies and the accompanying guerrilla warfare against French troops tied down the remainder, allowing the Anglo-Portuguese army to ultimately emerge victorious.

In this expansion you will find 18 historical scenarios that focus on Peninsular battles fought by the Spanish army from 1808 to 1813, plus all the new units you’ll need to field for these engagements.

Comments: I have finished all my wargameroom league games with a losing record, but still in the hunt for a playoff spot. Sample map and other graphics for this game are showing up and this one's going to be stunning on the table.

Game Link: http://gmtgames.com/p-304-1989.aspx

This is actually Twilight Struggle's graphic, but since 1989 is based on TS, this is a handy placeholder

Game Information:
1989 is an exciting, fast paced game simulating the end of the Cold War in 1989. During this amazing year, a series of democratic revolutions ended the 40 year Soviet empire in Eastern Europe. 1989 simulates the political, social and economic aspects of these revolutions using a card driven system similar to Twilight Struggle.

Components:

1 countersheet
1 22" x 34" map
1 rulebook (approx 24 pages)
2 player aid cards
2 strategy decks (110 cards)
1 Power struggle deck (55 cards)

First announced: -

Current Status: Made the cut.

Preorder Price (List Price): $38 ($55)

Number of Players: 2

Comments: Loss regained and a net +3 new orders. This is good. Currently without a production slot, this is the highest pre-order game without one.

Game Link: http://gmtgames.com/p-41-great-campaigns-of-the-thirty-years...

Complexity: Not listed
Solitaire Suitability: Not listed

Game Information: Great Campaigns of the Thirty Years War (GCo30YW) is a two-player game of operational warfare in the 17th Century. Armies maneuver on a point to point map of Southern Germany based on the road network available at the time. Each game is centered around a major battle or full campaign season. A Turn is a month divided into a variable number of impulses. Each army has a hand of Campaign Cards that control the amount of activity it may perform, the supplies it must expend, and a special action. Each impulse features one card play per army. Forces are concealed off map so players are faced with limited knowledge of the enemy. The major activities are maneuver, foraging, besieging fortifications, and an occasional battle. GCo30YW is a low-complexity game with emphasis on the players maneuvering their forces, but many decisions await. The low rules complexity allows each player, rather than being encumbered with rules, to focus on choices regarding how to manage his campaign.

Comments: now over 900. It used to be that anything Combat Commander was an instant "make the cut" game with very swift ascendancy to 1000+ orders. I don't think this one will make 1000 pre-orders before production.

Game Link: http://gmtgames.com/p-329-combat-commander-resistance.aspx

Game Information: Combat Commander: Resistance! (CC:R) expands upon CC:Europe and CC:Mediterranean by adding partisans and their war behind the front lines. This fourth volume of the Combat Commander series features special rules and components for fighting with Partisan forces against the Axis nations of Europe.

The new CC:R playbook covers the following:

* Random Scenario Generator Update, including the Partisan Leader Table and Fortification OB

* Definition of the Partisan Faction, its Unit Structure, Stats and Weapons

* Rules for Irregular Melee, Sewers and Sighting Markers

* New Orders: Infiltrate and Muster

* New Actions: Knife, No Quarter and Trap

* New Events: Inexperience, Patriotism and Stealth

In addition to the new playbook, the game includes 3 back-printed game maps (6 maps total), 6 double-sided scenario sheets (12 scenarios total), one counter sheet (units and markers), a 36-card Partisan Fate Deck and a 19-card Partisan Force Deck. The new maps depict specific historical locations in Greece, Hercegovina, Eastern Bosnia, Byelorussia, Croatia and Western Bosnia.

Comments: A nice spike in orders to push this one over 900 orders. It's a testament to the brilliance of Here I Stand that this one is doing so well, and with both No Retreat and Space Empires going to print, this is the new king queen of the GMT pre-order rankings and also puts this list back into the position of having no game over 1000 pre-orders on it.

I don't have enough superlatives to speak about my excitement over the announcement of this game. I knew it was in development, but that it's finally going to see light of day is simply outstanding to me. Based on what I've read of the game so far, I might even like this one more than Here I Stand, which is a game I simply love.

Of course, this game is another one of those which has a very long playing time. Notwithstanding this however, it's on my personal P500 list. There are some games that one simply must have, and this is a must for me.

Game Link: http://www.gmtgames.com/p-341-virgin-queen.aspx

Game Information: Virgin Queen: Wars of Religion 1559-1598 is a game of grand strategy for two to six players based on the military, political and religious conflicts within Europe during the reigns of Elizabeth I of England and Philip II of Spain. Each player controls one or more of the major powers that presided over European politics in that day. Spain is the juggernaut, able to draw upon the vast riches of their global empire. But such a dominant power is sure to have many enemies. The Ottoman expansion towards Spain’s Mediterranean outposts remains unchecked. Elizabeth’s English sea dogs are poised to raid Spain’s overseas empire. And the forces of Protestant reform will soon drag Spain into eighty years of rebellion in the Netherlands. Will Spain find aid from its Catholic allies? Perhaps not from France, where the Catholic Valois dynasty is soon to engage another group of Protestant believers in the bloody French Wars of Religion. And even Philip’s relatives in Vienna who rule the Holy Roman Empire may dabble in the Protestant faith instead of remaining loyal to their Catholic heritage and Spanish brethren.
