We all learn a certain gaming etiquette that we try to follow. It's not a written set of universal rules, but rather partly learned and perhaps partly innate. It becomes more obvious to us, however, when someone blaringly doesn't get it....but what if they are truly innocent, because they are simply ignorant of what is considered to be good manners amongst gaming circles?

What do you think should be included in the "Guidebook to Gaming Etiquette" (if there were such a thing)?

Help Pick Up. All those meeples don't magically sort themselves out and march back into their individual baggies after the game has ended. A table covered in games pieces shouldn't be left for the game owner to take care of all by himself.

Trade Nice. Don't bully and badger players to get them to trade with you or into other play actions; that's just rude. Once when playing Settlers of Catan one player was trying to persuade others into trades with impatient finger tapping and intent stare downs, while repeatedly saying things like, "well if you knew what you were doing then...", "you can't win the game that way, you'll see", and "[with a heavy sigh] new players just don't get it!"

Practice Patience with Newbies. I know, it's not always easy. But give them extra time to make their moves. And it's okay to offer them advice on plays when they seem to be struggling; just don't play for them. And if you think they've made a dumb move try to keep that to yourself. We should try our best to make gaming a fun and enjoyable experience for everyone, so we can bring more people into our lair...devil

Avoid Interrupting the Game. Gaming of course should be social. Banter away with the fellow gamers at your table, get to know more about each other, and ask about their weekend. That's one thing. But having a private conversation with a friend that walks up to your table, while holding up the game play, is just rude.

Be honest about game play

I don't care how badly you want to play something, don't give people a false impression about what to expect from a game just so that they'll play it. If a game usually takes 4 hours to play, people are going to want to know that before they start.

Don't quit! See it through! Don't quit the game just because you're losing, or because one turn didn't go your way, or because you decided you just don't care for the game. One person leaving the game can be very disruptive to the rest of the game.

There are a few games that can handle one player bowing out, and if you're playing one of those, then OK. But otherwise, commit to the game, and play to win, not to pick another winner.

Oh, and if everyone mutually agrees they're having a miserable time playing this game and they all want to quit, that's OK. And if everyone but one person wants to quit, then you can all mutually agree to declare that last guy the winner and move on.

No Excessive Lamenting. This is close to the sulking/mardy/whining entry.

Do not incessantly obsess and lament over a sub-optimal play you just made, which gave your opponent some significant advantage/points/position or the win.

Lamenting for one game turn is perfectly human. Lamenting for the rest of the game is downright unacceptable.

Suck it up! Learn from your mistakes, beat yourself up for a moment if you must, and move on. There's a game to be played.

No Sore Losers. Let the winner have their moment of glory.

Some postmortem discussion of why you lost is perfectly acceptable. However, denigrating the winner with reasons why you didn't win are not acceptable.

"Had I rolled differently, I would have won."
"Had I picked the card I was looking for, I would have won."
"Had you not done that move, and I did this other move, I would have won."
"Had I known about that rule, I would have played different, and I would have won."
(continue ad nauseam)

Good intentions are no substitute for a good education.

This geeklist gives me the opportunity to ask which would be the preferred etiquette:

You are playing a game and are currently not in first place, and the person in first place is pretty far ahead of the rest. How are you tactically going to approach the game?

(a) You are going to attack the person in first place (perhaps even stimulating others to do the same) in order to make the gap as small as possible.

(b) You are going on an all-out attack aimed at the person who is the next in rank (i.e., if your are in third place you attack the person in second place), in order to improve your own ranking.

(c) You are simply going to make moves that improve your own score the most.

I recently played Dominant Species for the very first time with several experienced players. I was resigned from the start that I was going to lose, but actually did pretty well. The most experienced person was way ahead of the rest of us in first place, but I was in second place. The person in third place then chose to do (b), trying to crunch me wherever he could, because, as he said, he had no chance to end up in first place so he was going for second place. I found that very annoying, as he was favoring hurting me over making moves that would actually give him points. The only thing I could do was trying to defend myself against him by specifically attacking him. And the person in first place was a little bored, because he was able to make all kinds of strong moves which no-one opposed. I still ended up in second place in the end, but everybody was a bit irritated after the last round (I still find it a beautiful game, though).

So, from a gaming etiquette point-of-view I prefer (c). (a) is just a way of playing that makes the person in second place come out victorious. (b) makes the game worse for everybody. But (c) is the actual point of the game: getting a high score -- and this should, eventually, lead to both the highest score and the highest possible rank for you, if the others do this as well. Of course, if you are of the opinion that getting the highest rank is the point of the game (and yes, that could certainly be argued), then you might prefer (b). And I know many groups in which (a) is the norm.

No drinks on the game table

Already mentioned in the comments for Don't be the bull in a china shop above but it's worth saying again: It doesn't take much for a spillage and it usually happens fast and as a surprise. It's a hassle to clean the game and the table and it interrupts play big time. It's easier to place drinks onto side tables or way out of the players movement area. That way you got a clean table and you don't have to look out for wet patches either.

Avoid taking ages to decide what to do on your turn.

I've been known to suffer from analysis paralysis myself, so I know it can be hard. But sometimes you just have to accept that making the optimal move is less important than ensuring everyone is enjoying the game.
