Below is my Top 10 list of wargames designed to be played alone. These are games that meet all of the following criteria: (1) not just capable of being played solitaire, but primarily designed to be played solo; (2) designated as a wargame by BGG; (3) compelling "theme" (not too abstract); and (4) fun to play (understanding that this can be very subjective, especially for wargames). This is a list of the BEST! As always, your mileage may vary and some entries may be "controversial." As such, please feel free to comment, debate, or just express your own point of view. Feel free to thumbsup this list (to draw attention and more comments) or any pleasing, interesting or thought provoking entries. If I missed one that you feel is essential or I am "insane for not listing" (trust me, it has been said before), then by all means let the comments fly . . . just be civil. FYI - I am a sucker for comments and discussion and usually thumbsup most if not all of them.

I find that these lists sometimes are helpful for others seeking similar games and the more rich the discussion for more useful the list.

As always, thanks for reading and participating!

From BGGer: Alan Kaiser (alkaiser)

"The best solitaire game I have ever played. Very tense and exciting throughout the game as you try to avoid all the nastiness the system throws at you. The stories you create with your squad will be remembered for many years. Highly recommended for those armchair generals with no one to play with. It even has a fairly good replay value especially when you add in two or three of the expansions and play campaign games. One thing about getting old is that you start to forget little things here and there. Perfect, that just adds to the replay value of this game!"

From BGGer: Adam Osborn (atomzero)

"An excellent combination of chrome and playability, analysis and excitement, this game is at the top of the solitaire genre for me right now. Phantom Leader is a game that really takes advantage of the solo genre. Unlike many solitaire games, Phantom Leader substantially rewards planning over luck. In a multiplayer game, I could not spend 20 minutes planning out my turn without losing all of my gaming friends. In Phantom Leader, this planning is encouraged, and is actually very enjoyable."

From BGGer: Mike NZ (Dirty Harry)

"Great game! How I hate to lose my men to German fighters...struggled back to base, holes everywhere, burns, wounded, KIA's...decision making in game who cares when all u want to do is get your men & plane home safely...usually never in one piece...and it's just a brilliant game IMHO because the feelings that the game creates. A genuine empathy for our personally named cardboard crew...doesn't sound right but it really works! I named one of my gunners after a person at work who I never really liked...Ahem...and I put him in the tail gunner position...after several enemy fighter attacks he actually saved our bacon...and several missions I even liked the guy! (Too bad the real life version never saved anything but himself-he was eventually lost bailing out over Germany as a POW)

I put my mates in crew positions, relatives, sometimes famous movie stars-Clint Eastwood has piloted many a mission. Play it. Don't believe all you read. Find out fer yerself! Be it. If u don't like after playing fine. At least ya gave it a whirl and u know. Read a book by Ambrose...or some vet first hands experiences."

From BGGer: Steve Bishop (bishuk)

"This is a top solitaire wargame (easily the best I've played) and despite all the fuss about the rules I found it no more complicated than a lot of other medium to heavy wargames.
It reminds me of when I first bought 'UP Front' and thought "Wow this is different", I think it may be the concepts rather than the rules that people struggle with.

The designer should be applauded for a bold enterprise that illustrates the problems of command and control more than weapon factors but at the same time shows the advantages and limitations of the different weapon systems."

From BGGer: Ryan Jenkinson (transcend11)

"Amazing solitaire game!

I am always interested in games that play great solo, which tend to be cooperative (which you can see I own many) or flexible enough to have a good variant.

This is my first true solitaire game and it's been great. Granted, it's new to me, and I've only played the first of four maps. But all four playthroughs of that single map have been very different from each other, and that's without including the multitude of options to add to the difficulty.

I'm sure I will be playing this one regularly for quite a while."

From BGGer: Paul Heald (cerora)

"As someone who serverd in the Falklands all I can say is that during my first play I had goosebumps. The game is an extraordinary effort that manages to capture a remarkable narrative! This is the first game on the Falkland conflict that has managed to capture any of the issues that the British & Argentine military had to deal with.If any of you are on the fence now is the time to come on down and play an extraordinary game."

#10

From BGGer: Adam Hickey (ahickey)

"A tour de force simulation of the first half of the Battle of the Atlantic in World War II. Epic in scope and depth, it is not for the faint of heart or those who desire to see tactical interactions. Even so, tension abounds in combat, and strategic planning is a complicated mix of resource management and risk taking. As the game's designer has said, Steel Wolves-and its companion game for the Pacific, Silent War-are simulations designed for those who enjoy being the Grim Reaper's accountant. A downside for many will be extensive repetitive tasks, but these are necessary to provide the statistically accurate results that are at the core of the game, while at the same time providing a combat narrative to the player. But for those willing to put in the time and effort, it will provide an experience like no other."
